Apparently when he originally signed up and said hitler when they asked his name, the recruiting officer thinking he was joking replied 'nice to meet you, my names hess'

I think this interview was after his arrival in New York in 1939. The ship he travelled on with his mother was the SS Normandie.
In 1944 ships travelling to Normandy would start the beginning of the end for Uncle Adolf.
