  • Nina Bonina Brown is one of the most conceptual queens to come out of Rupaul's Dragrace. To this day, many of the looks that she showcased on season 9 are still relevant to this day. I thought it would be a good idea to do an in-depth exploration of Nina's dragrace career, and try to offer different perspectives on certain aspects of her timeline. Hope you guys enjoy.

I love her response to the "read" that she lives with her parents, "I'm sorry your parents don't want you staying there." When you look at history and the world in general it's actually rare for a culture to stigmatize people living with their parents the way we do. Nina’s journey on her season has to be one of the most frustrating things I have ever watched on Drag Race, because it was a textbook representation of the real life effects and stigma behind mental illness. Watching everyone completely misunderstand her in Untucked and say all the wrong things took me back to my high school days, when people would get upset with me for being a downer when I had no real control over my situation.
I respect what Nina stands for on her channel, which is open and respectful discussion. I don’t always agree with her, and she probably wouldn’t always agree with me either. And that’s okay. She is brave enough to talk about things that most of the queens wouldn’t and never sugar coats her opinions. People love to manipulate a lot of what she says, so I can’t blame her for being so hostile nowadays.
One day, I hope she gives herself the chance to return, if she’s ready. She deserves a Rudemption.

Race abso fucking loutely plays a huge role in this. Sharon Needles has enough prominent stories that she’s easier to point out, but the same applies to Mimi on first. She may not be the big name that most people would go to for drag race, but she does a lot of the production and staging of the cruises and stuff so she’s making a pretty penny in spite of a copious amount of accusations against her that are far worse than anything Nina thought of doing. Like I said in my earlier comment, a lot of these “problematic views“ that people are so quick to point out are things that Trixie has said or Willam has said, and nobody bats an eye. To be clear, I am not suggesting that she should be saying some of these problematic things, but what I am saying is that you don’t hear anything about it when it’s Trixie or Katya (who I love) or a great many other predominantly white queens. Katya in fact said and did some absolutely, like literally insane things when she was not doing well with her mental health, and everyone was so quick to say “well she’s not mentally well!“. Which she’s not. But why does she immediately get that pass?

I enjoy Nina, and I especially dislike the reads about her living “at home”. This is not a read on her at all, but someone who has been as open with her mental health struggles as Nina has been may need more support and people around her who she loves and who love her. Not everyone is able to live completely independently, and that’s okay. How many adults in this country go from family home to dorm to their marital home? How many go from family home to dorm and back to mom and dad? And, like Nina said herself, she has a loving and supportive family who want her around; maybe some other queer performers don’t have that familial relationship and maybe have some jealousy.
Does Nina have some yikes takes? Yes. I have seen popular, often white, fan favorites say similar problematic things and it gets glossed over. Seeing that happen may even be why she doubles down and can’t see when her takes might need some reviewing. I don’t know. I don’t live in her head. But I still find her to be fiercely talented and deserving of a place at the table.

The truth is that eventually a child has to take care of their parents, as they start to decline.
      HONOR THY MOTHER & FATHER
      - If you are successful and have the house, your parents move in with you
      - if your parents have the house, the child moves back in with their parents
      - You can also put them in a nursing home, if the burden becomes overwhelming and the parent requires 24 hour care, but even when needing to exercise this option, which many POC don’t, the child visits, supervises and participates in every single day to ascertain their parent is being properly cared for
In many families this responsibility often falls on the gay child, because they don’t have a spouse or children of their own. Nina/Pierre is entering her 40’s with parents that are Senior Citizens, with the gradual process of helping them stay on top of things, being their Health Advocate starts happening
I’ve seen countless of people wholeheartedly move back home and step into this responsibility with nothing but love for their parents. If you come from parents that are still together, like Nina/Pierre (and myself) you also are mindful and comforting to the parent that is watching their spouse decline.
      This is heart work ❤️
At this point, all my friends are in a position of having to be the Caregiver to their aging parent(s). Last year, we all lost a parent to COVID-19. My best friend, lost both his parents. From the health care, illness, to death, funeral arrangements and putting their affairs in order (selling house).
It’s a lot of work, but the love you have for them will see you through it. This is the stuff that people don’t talk about, but it happens everyday. R.I.P. to all the great parents and strength & blessings to the gay or female child that took on the responsibility and saw it through.

I’m a huge Nina fan. What makes me gravitate towards her more than any other queen is how real she is. When I look at other queens I feel like I’m just looking at an image or a model, just another TV personality. Watching Nina I feel like I’m having a conversation with a real person. It’s very refreshing.
I don’t think Nina blocks people if they don’t agree with her, she just asks for people to agree or disagree RESPECTFULLY. Which is fair in my opinion.
I also disagree that her response to drama is poor. I respect more so that she sticks to how she feels and doesn’t offer fake apologies to appease everyone. I think the hate and labels she gets for being Transphobic is so wrong. Nina made a joke, a “read” about Gottmik. Whether or not people found it funny offensive or didn’t think anything of it at all is subjective. It’s not fair to label a subjective joke as one thing or another. Everyone is entitled to feel how they want to feel about her comment without bashing her, her fans and labelling her as a transphobe for it. Her joke might’ve been in “poor taste” to some but I don’t think it even comes close to being transphobic. I guess after seeing comments about trans people online, especially on the Shaderoom on instagram, it’s hard for me to view Nina’s remarks as Transphobic when people have truly said some actually horribly violent and vulgar things about Trans people there that are way more deserving of that title.
Idk I guess I find it weird also that she got so much hate when fan favourites such as Bianca Del Rio and Trixie Mattel have made similar (or arguably worse) reads about others yet they don’t get cancelled. Reading is also a part of drag culture, we see it every season, yet we don’t see any queens getting labelled as racist or fatphobic when they make edgy jokes during the reading challenge. There just seems to be a double standard when it comes to Nina.
That’s just my take on Nina. I really appreciate this video though cause one of the most annoying things about discussions of Nina is it’s always centred around Drama. You’ve taken the time to show her talent and how her art and drag influenced people and the drag race as a whole. She’s more than a Blac Chyna joke or some shady jokes online. She’s an extremely talented artist. I really enjoyed your exploration of her 🙏

Personally, I feel as tho Nina is a scapegoat for them. Queens will see Nina’s controversy as the perfect opportunities to condemn her actions and come off as “woke” or non-problematic themselves.
Nina can make one joke and become a main cancellation topic in the franchise, but the fans and queens will ignore queens and topics such as Redacted Pie coming back and getting showered with love, Baddy Davis making a racial joke about the Asian community and when brought to attention by River Midway- only got attention because Roscoes didn’t want to go through another scandal and cancelation.

Tbf, it's debatable whether it's transphobic or not to point out that bio queens and trans queens don't need to pad and can rely more on their bodies. Kylie and her are friends so I presume Kylie doesn't see Nina as transphobic for her opinions on her drag. And Nina obviously doesn't hate body reliant drag that much since she was willing to tour with Kylie, she just thinks it makes things easier on the illusion (or eliminates the need for illusion at all) that's all.
ETA: since she complains when any queen doesn't bother padding it's clearly not a trans/misogyny issue

@@MeeplandHeights I can’t speak for anyone else, but as a trans drag performer myself, it makes me uncomfortable when people comment about my body within a pageant or competition setting. In addition to the dysphoria it can cause, it takes the focus off the work you put into your outfit and performance and draw attention to something that might not be the thing you want people to notice about your drag.
As a general rule, since trans bodies are already so stigmatized, it’s hard not to separate that stigma from Nina’s comment whether she meant it that way or not.
Like you said, to some extent, transphobia is subjective, but there are legitimate reasons for trans people to feel uncomfortable with what she said. (I’m a fan of Nina by the way. I don’t think she’s purposely bigoted or whatever, but some of her statements about trans people are just plain incorrect and I wish trans people could correct her without being blocked.)

I used to follow her on Instagram and she uploaded a really awesome picture of herself with horror makeup. I commented “this is frightening” as it was, and she basically attacked me and a few of her followers joined in. I was like “whoa chill it’s still amazing, why are you so sensitive?” Art can be frightening and beautiful and as an artist myself it left a horrible taste in my mouth. I ended up blocking her just to stop getting so much hate from her fans.
