missed the videos Chuck :) Thanks for the consistent content! Cheers
+Coleman Jackson thanks man! I appreciate you watching!
This video was fabulous, Chuck. Loved it!
Thank you!
Well done and informative vid. You got your exercise in. When I saw that nice blue floor jack I was like this guy has patience and is showing that it can be done with vehicle included tools. Absolutely right doing it yourself is the way to go. Most shops will not take the time to torque the wheels or use the proper rotation patterns that you mentioned. Sweet garage set-up!
I did it to prove it could be done! But yeah way easier with better tools!
My dude! Car's are both looking great! Nice video on the rotation, I'm jealous as usual of that amazing lift! Hope you're doing good bro, enjoy your week!!! :)
Thanks man!
Hey Chuck, any thoughts on installing a catch can or AOS on the Forester? Apparently the intake valves can get a bit gummed up on the XTs over time from blow-by.
+This Does Not Compute I've considered it for the XT and STI. I'm not sure how it'd effect warranty though. I know it has the potential to be helpful long term but it might give Subaru an easy out of something short term.
Loved the video man, you've been out for a while, I was happy to see the videos
+Alan Santana thanks man! Yeah I've been busy with my newborn!
T-WRX all understandable man, as long as you can continue make some videos I'm happy :-)
Hi Chuck, loved your videos and your sign off.....since you are on the topic of tyres, would like to check with you, what in your opinion is a set of good tyres for stock 18" rims on FXT, for city driving and summer conditions throughout the year. Thanks.
I actually never thought about using the spare tire as a placeholder! I will try this next time! thanks
Good stuff man!
Good detail man! The time lapse of you raising the jack was oddly satisfying lol
Haha that jack is a PITA!
Where do you find the torque specifications for the lug nuts? I have a 2017 Legacy and am going to start doing my own oil changes and tire rotations and want to be absolutely sure I do it right.
have a 2" lift on the SJ, that oem jack wouldn't lift the tires off the ground >.< I would need two pieces of wood stacked. Another jack you could recommend that'll give it more lift without the extra layers of wood?
no matter how little it may be the videos are great :)
+John-Daniel Martin thanks man!
This is super helpful! Thanks for your videos. What's the total height with your cargo basket on?
How important is torque wrench? I never used one and never had a problem loosening lug nuts. Especially on alloy wheels.
hello would you recommend buying a subaru forester 2016 navi or outback 3.6 2017 both have 16,000 miles, is the brand reliable? or I will have problems.
Great advice on the scissor jack, I was using my Subaru OEM and it bent.
Yeah it'll work, but its not really made for garage duty!
Hay Chuck, new to your channel, like the info. on the FXT. Thinking about changing from Toyota to Subaru. Over the years I love Toyota’s reliability but they haven’t necessarily kept up with the “fun to drive factor!!” Any major issues at all to be concerned with the turbo engine?
Today is tire rotation and oil change day...I might try this method just to say I did it. I wish the 2015 WRX had a "fruit loop" in the front to make it easier for the two back stands on the sides.
hi, can u send me the link for the type of roof rack you used on this car? i think its good on a forester 2017.
A is always my favorite number 😋
After rotating tire don't you have to reset the tpms so the car know which tire is in which location?
funny thing is I put so few miles on my car each season, I Just rotate them at the beginning of each season when the winters/summers go on. So my summers will only be rotated again next summer when I put them on after winter.
This is my STi schedule as well!
good idea using the spare as a dummy. I have always just put my car on Jack stands and done them all at once. Im not sure if you mentioned it or not, but I always have my ebrake on just in case! sweet video!
+Subie Shakedown yes e brake!
Thanks Chuck.... just used your “spare tire” technique to rotate tires on my Subaru Outback XT.... worked great ! I do have a hydaraulic floor jack and large 4 way cross wrench to speed things up. What do you think about applying a little grease to lug nut threads ?
Owner's manual states "Never apply oil to the threaded parts, wheel nuts, or tapered surface of the wheel". I'm no expert but for now I assume that applies to grease too. Grease might make the nuts easier to spin on&off and initially break free, but that's only good thing while you are doing it, and could be a very bad thing while driving. I'll stick to elbow grease (or good tools to make it easier.)
My owners manual said to cross the back tires and move the fronts straight back. The forester must be different than a WRX? Do you notice more tire noise after rotating? I rotated mine at the same time I took the snow tires off and they sound noisier than I remember.
+Savage Grace the stock WRX tires are super noisy! I don't know if the Forester manual says the same I've always used tire tracks recommendation and it's worked great 👍
So driver side front to rear. Passenger side is also front to rear rotation?
This video could be done in 1 minute.
Great video Chuck! I noticed the OEM lugs gets pretty nasty looking on Subi's. I put on black Gorilla lugs last weekend when I took my winter set off and the OEMs back on. Using a great floor jack, torque and impact wrench of course!
I've got a set of black lugs on the STI, I need to pick some up for the XT as well!
My OEM lugs had just under 6k miles on them are already looked rough. The standard chrome lugs from Tire Rack did OK on the winter wheels, but the wheels are Enkei black. I like the black lugs with the OEM XT wheels, I'll send you a pic via Insta.
Chuck, do you do any maintenance for intake valves? I have a 2016 XT model and wondering if I should start taking some measures to decrease or slow down carbon build up? Thanks.

Agurrak ta ondo izan,
Can you place a jack stand just beside that scissor jack? Just working on one at a time. As an extra support.
Yes you definitely could 👍
just to be clear and get advice from someone who knows way more about the WRX then I do...
my tires have "Outside" stamped and want to say they are non-directional? So fronts go to back and back in the front criss cross? or am I all fxxxed up lol
+GR8GUY54 as longas the tires are not directional (you'd see and arrow and some words telling you which way the tire is supposed to rotate when driving) you can use the same method I just used! If you have a new WRX and it came with stock tires then you should be good ✌️
You could do this, wouldn't it be better to take it to a tyre place and get it done with your yearly wheel alignment?
Not sure if you watched Arrested Development, but I got some funny Lucille Bluth vibes when you mentioned the option of paying someone $100 for a tire rotation. "I mean, it’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost? Ten dollars?" Even dealers won't rob you that badly. 😂
Anyway, I liked the approach of showing it could be done using only the tools that come with the car, and like you said, you know it's being done correctly.
I've never seen that show, but I'd like to assume its a compliment! Thanks for watching man!
Man your trunk jack works a lot better than mine. Mine is tough as heck to turn.
Yeah that one was pretty smooth!
how easy is it to replace the rear diff gasket? do you have any videos on that? subaru wants to charge me 600 bucks to do it
+Jason Gomm dang $$$ I've never done it, but it can't be that hard!
omg did this take u all day lol
+Wes Cooper haha no I started at like 8 PM the sun was about to go down 👌
What about TPMS sensors?
The car doesn't care where the sensors are all 4 just have to be within range. So when you rotate it's not aware which wheel is which.
Are your Forester XT tires directional? Or did you just do front to back?
XT tires are non directional, I crossed the backs when I put them on the front!
Great video! Thank you
Where did you get the roof rack?
Amazon! amzn.to/2eYyHTM
Any suggestions on jack stands and floor jack?
Honestly a cheaper set from Harbor Freight will work great!
Just make sure it will raise the car enough since the suspension to travels down as you lift the car. A "trolley" jack typically won't raise a Forester enough to get the tires off. I learned that the hard way. Go with a true floor jack that isn't a super low profile 9" lift max since the Forester starts at 8" clearance then add the suspension drop into the equation when you lift the car.
For less than $100 extra at the time you purchase a set of 4 tires from a national chain, you can get the wheels rebalanced and rotated every 5000 miles for the life of the tires, plus blowout insurance. That's roughly $15/change. For $30 you can get a folding cross-wrench (or a breaker bar) and a basic torque wrench that will last a lifetime, and let you reset the lugnut torques to be assured they are tightened properly. A cross-wrench is better to use for loosening overly tight lugnuts and doing tire changes than the OEM wrench and will fit in the spare tire well. With those tools and a tire shop, you can finish a tire rotation without getting dirty or work up a sweat within 10 minutes max..
Yup. That's exactly what I do. Though I don't even normally have them rotated on a schedule because I rarely put on more than 5000 between swapping between my winter and summer wheel/tire sets. The rotation happens for free at the shop. If you just go in, even not having bought tires there, I know of two chains that'll just do the swap for free regardless trying to earn your future business. For my part, their little tactic worked like a charm. :)
We're the TPMS sensors a problem?
Nope, they don't care what corner of the car they are on.
I like number A as well. 👍 @5:20
Once I did the same.. I rotate the 4 wheels using the spare tire... it takes a lot and I don't think I would do it again (I rather to pay someone else to do it :)
Haha fair enough!
Chuck out of curiosity, since you're such a car guy. How come you don't invest in a few hydraulic car jacks and an impact gun? The amount of time and effort you saved would have paid for itself.
This video was for us plebs...
+Jerry Leung yeah I have all of that stuff in addition to the lift in the background. This video was too show some of my viewers that you don't need all that stuff to do some basic maintenance yourself. But I agree it makes it much safer and easier! Thanks for watching!
Guy with the STI and an E36 M3.... I'm the pleb... I'm not worth 👐
Did tires rotation on my own by following your video. When you actually do it, it is not as easy as it looks in the video.
Haha, its simple, just takes some time!
so lucky..... i HATE rotating my tires.... (w 4 jack stands....)
whoa... never seen a tire rotation done that way in my life.. pretty innovative method. i think i prefer to get all 4 on jackstands myself.. ;)
Yeah its actually much easier with a legit jack and pretty quick. 4 jack stands can be a pain too!
It would have been ‘easy’ if you had used a proper jack + impact wrench. Lol
lol number a
