  • While it is often forgotten, Judaism has a long history in the development and history of spiritual / demonic possession and exorcism. In this episode of Esoteric, we explore the first 1000 years of this developments. From Ancient Israel and their neighbors, the Egyptians and Mesopotamians, we explore the rise of angels and demons in the apocalyptic movement, before turning to explore several major figures such as the Essenes, Jesus of Nazareth, Philo of Alexandria, and the Roman-Jewish historian Josephus. What we will find is the complicated development of possession and exorcism through the centuries of Jewish religious culture.

For as much of my life as I've spent studying firstly magic, and biblical lore and history as a sub-division of that, I am both impressed and humbled by your knowledge, your concise presentation of dense information, and your overall expertise. Keep it up!

Egyptian demonology is interesting too, as they didn't even write their names down for fear of getting their attention, but evidence suggest then some demons were given offices as protectors over the home and so akin to domestication of dogs or cats got their name and place amongst humans. There's a video on this from an university simply titled Egyptian demonology. That's oversimplified but what I drew from it . Also not the only place the darker aspects aren't even named or mentioned due to fear. Even Miccenean Greek Hades and Persephony were alluded to by calling them pseudonyms such as the host of many guest or the girl or maiden or queen for his wife.

Nothing in Hebrew Bible about evil spirits possessing a human body!

It is little known fact that in traditional Daoism practiced today one of the main activities of a Daoist temple is to perform possessions and exorcism, often to help the general public. The other discipline is the creation of talismans and emulets for healing and protection. Daoist are believed to have perfected the science of tapping into the Spirit rhelm by performing precise rituals with deep mindful intentions and using the primordial energy to alter earthly energies.

On the note of seeds warding off evil spirits, in Japan you throw soybeans at oni (sometimes translated as ogre but better translated as evil spirits generally) for the festival of Setsubun. I love when there are things that show up in so many and such diverse cultures.

You did not note it when talking about Middle Eastern fumigation with sulphur, but it seems significant that you can find Odysseus in the Odyssey using sulpher to drive out the miasma from his house following the murder of the suitors, which puts this practice into the late 700's BCE in the Mediterranean world.

Actually in the book of Tobit, Tobias has no clue that the man he traveled with is an angel. Raphael does not reveal his identity until the end of the story after Tobias marries. Until that point, Tobias and his family think that Raphael is just a local tzadiq (righteous man).

Interesting point about the bells. I have been trying to find out how bells became part of Christian practice and exorcism. There's apparently not a ton of data on the ritual sage of bells in the Greek and Roman world. But this seems like an interesting correlation.

i was going to comment that the problems of harvesting the barras root sound a lot like harvesting a mandrake, and then i looked it up and discovered that Josephus's discussion of how to harvest a barras root was long interpreted as how to harvest a mandrake root. the more you know!
