    Works great! czcams.com/users/postUgkxprGGPRQoChQaA8u58dt7miEpxQBKiWeJ More difficult with longer grass, though, but I was expecting that. I have a small back yard, it seemed like overkill to buy a lawnmower with an engine. This is easy to carry in and out of the basement through the bulkhead. Very sharp (be careful). At the back of the mower are little wheels, which I use when pulling the mower backwards, so it's easy to readjust direction. I'm including a photo which shows the before and after for my lawn when it was at its longest. For long grass like that you really have to put some muscle into it, and I needed to go into a new section of grass with some momentum, but when the grass is only an inch or two higher than regular cut height it's quite easy. The lawn is still patchy and full of weeds, but at least it's a good height! A step in the right direction.

    Finally had some time to catch up on your content and ask a question. Does backlapping provide any benefit on a double relief ground reel? I've never got a clear answer from the mobile grinding man who does it for me at work. I just tighten the bed knife up a touch as normal but wonder if a backlap every so often will help.

    Yo Ben love your stuff but i will throw something in here... In order to avoid any unnecessary strain on your sprockets, chains, clutch pads and especially your drill you should actually remove your chains from the sprocket that is attached to the cylinder blade. Then place your socket on the nut that sits directly on the cylinder blade itself. This way you have less chance of something bad occurring (Such as forgetting to remove a spark plug and the clutch grabbing causing the engine to start.... Yes Ive seen it happen to my friend, luckily he wasn't injured but unfortunately his brand new Dewalt drill did not survive). Just remember, the less moving parts you need the better. Otherwise great job! Keep up the awesome content mate!

    • @LawnTips
      @LawnTips  Před 5 lety +1

      No worries mate!
      120 grit is great if you have a thinner blade. Won’t take out as much of the blade when you back lap.
      I prefer 120 anyway.

    What happened to this...I got to the 9 min mark a couple hours ago when the video just disappeared???? What I was going to type back then was.....I've had a 'premium' CZcams account since it was called 'red' [and a long time b4 they changed the name]..........I've watched thousands of how to video's...this video has been [one of] the most valuable video's I have ever watched. I use my reel mower nearly every day with some days on multiple lawns......I usually take it in for sharpening or back lapping every couple to 3 months at a cost of $180.00 every time......I'm not a mechanic in any way shape or form....I'm a gardener and turf manager - that's where my strength lies....but I'm not a rich man....there's no money in being a gardener.....you just saved me about a grand a year - thanks Dude!

  • @abhipk8241
    @abhipk8241 Před 4 lety

    My mower’s bed knife was ground . But didn’t end up in a good job. Looks like it’s been warp when I put together . Don’t think regrinding will help. Any way how much of material is removed with 120 grade? Can I just use a corse grade for roughing and finish of with 120. Right now one end and middle is only cutting the paper.

    i think that the cutting blade on them are like safety or cut throat razor. where you need to clean it after every use and then dry it as the stuff on the blade and water can dull the blade.

  • @RickSirl
    @RickSirl Před 4 lety +12

    bed-knife to reel contact seems a little to tight. you should be able to cut paper and not hear the contact when spun (or very little). if you have to spin the reel with more then one finger it is too tight, and it can cause the bed-knife to heat up and warp. Also time between grinds will be greatly reduced as will wear of both reel and bed-knife. just a suggestion i have been a golf course mechanic for over 20 years so not trying to be some back yard know it all

    • @alexsallery
      @alexsallery Před rokem

      If you can't cut paper unless you have a big amount of contact does that tell you your reel needs a backlapping or maybe even a grind? My reel is pretty hard to spin even with 1 hand, if I loosen it so it spins easily (with 1 finger) it won't cut paper

    • @TPGMatt
      @TPGMatt Před 10 měsíci

      Hi Rick, so if you have it backed off enough where the bedknife contact is minimal, but you're still not cutting paper, does it mean you have to get your reel and bedknife sharpened?

    When you test the cut with paper, can you use normal paper?
    I have just had my cylinder mower "sharpened" tested the cut when I got it back and found it didn't cut the paper cleanly, when I said to him it's not cutting paper cleanly he replied "your not using the correct paper, it has to be glossy magazine paper."
    Is this true or is he having me on?

    • @LawnTips
      @LawnTips  Před 4 lety +1

    • @JNP737
      @JNP737 Před 4 lety

      @@LawnTips Cheers man, thought that was the case. Had a feeling he was lying, he's charged me £140 ($285) to get it sharpened, and I doesn't even cut paper. he even told me that very few people do cylinder grinding in the UK because "the government have made it illegal to sell cylinder mowers." That's also clearly not true, can still easily get cylinder mowers and I can't find anything about it being illegal online.
      Your videos are awesome, learning so much from them. Keep up the great work 👌🏻👍🏻

    WRONG! From a workshop supervisor of "Scott Bonnar & Rover mowers" 1978-1982, Indroopilly Golf course, Course Technician 1982-1987, almost right, have to remove the short link chain from the drive sprocket otherwise you will damage the plastic engine clutch drive assy, there are three grades of grinding paste, Course/Median/Fine, I would recommend Fine paste for domestic use, if you have a good backlapping program in place you will never need to have your cylinder ground which will double the life of your cutting cylinder.

    Late, late to the party, but... I strongly suspect that the ubiquitous catch-phrase ("righty- ...") does more to fuck up people's understanding of how threads work than is commonly thought. There is no 'right' and there is no 'left' in circular or axial motion. The only people who understand what the catch-phrase is _trying_ to encapsulate and to convey understand threads in an entirely different way.
