The Estonian Composer Arvo Pärt creates great drama in the Evangelist’s tale of Christ’s trial and crucifixion through the kaleidoscopic textures of 4 solo voices and 4 contrasting instruments. There is a profoundly tense, atmospheric depiction of the encounter between Christ and Pilate. Elsewhere, as an angry crowd or outraged priests, the Chorus cries out in jagged interjections. Pärt allows space for reflection in his music as these textured sounds rise to blend in the vault of the Cathedral.
