    Thank you for such an amazing hot process tutorial. You are my favorite of all time. I also love how you come from Nova Scotia. I am from an island in Hawaii. You inspire me to think out of the box and celebrate with what you do have around you. It is more pricey here as everything is imported. Asia is not far from us where items could be less expensive, however there regulations on there products are not always the same. But with that being said , I think I still will try to create a small soap business. Friends and family have been telling me that it is time for me to try this. Mahalo Nui Loa, sincerely your soaping friends

    This is such a beautiful soap! The swirl was visible, love the nuance of color and design, just wish I could smell it.. Thank You So Much, Ms Valerie and husband too, for sharing your craft by video! Both of you are very talented. I've only been soaping for 1 1/2 years and 90% is HP, was hooked after the first batch. Now looking forward to your method, what a time saver for Christmas giving!. It helps that I grew up making lard and then the soap from it with Momma after Daddy finished off the hogs in November, days chosen by 'the signs' aka Farmers Almanac, lol. Thanks again, Merry Christmas!

      Hello doecreekgirl1 thankyou for your lovely words and thank you so much for watching! yes, I grew up on a farm as well and my mom use to make soap, although I was the youngest of 6, I never did see it. +Shalebrook Handcrafted Soap. Yeah! Another farm girl... I was youngest of 5 & my 2 older sisters were married, so as a late surprise for my parents meant working with Momma at whatever needed doing, no idle hands, lol. I have question please, I use full fat coconut milk (love what it brings to the soaps) but it has natural sugar- will this make batter too hot & if so will using lower % help and/or do I compensate by not adding sugar water & maple syrup at end of cook? Thank you so much. Yes, you two make a great team but he got lucky 'cause farm girls make hard work fun plus we can cook 'From Scratch'! Blessings!

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +1

      lol, yes , it's wonderful being on a farm for sure! Full fat coconut milk is great, but depending on how much you use it can make your soap softer, or take longer to harden (I learned that the hard way by making my own coconut milk, but that soap was the biggest lather ever)...full fat coconut milk shouldn't add any sugar unless your purchasing the milk with sugar in it. I use unsweetened coconut milk, so I still add sugar and maple syrup. The kind of coconut milk I purchase, if I don't make my own, is called Coconut Dream, Original Unsweetened Coconut milk, and it doesn't say whether it's full fat or not, but it sure works great. If your doing this HP you don't have to worry about heat, if your doing CP , sugar will add heat, but I haven't had a problem with it. If doing CP you could pour it into your mold and then put in the freezer for a day, then the fridge for a day and by that time it should not have any issue with heat.

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 8 lety +1

      Thank you very much Robin. Yes there are a lot of ingredients and I've been soaping awhile, but you can make a very simple formula as well and I do at times, for example my Castile soap only has OO in it. But I do normally add yogurt, coconut milk, and sugar and sodium lactate. Take your time soaping and enjoy the goodness of homemade soap. Once you have done a few you will continue to grow. I do a fair amount of research and in the beginning watched a lot of soapers, and joined groups and asked questions etc. and I still watch othe rsoapers, to learn new swirls and I still research.

    It looks wonderful! I have got to be patient, cover it up, and let it sit a few minutes like that between the add ins. I still lose confidence that it will just get dry, but seeing it done is very helpful. Thank you!

    • @mosherbrian
      @mosherbrian Před 8 lety +2

      Hey Stephanie, so glad you enjoyed it - yes, patience lol - you don't really have to wait after the sugar water and coconut milk, I just did 1 minute there, but after the yogurt I found it really helpful as there will be some SL that comes out of that --- what i'm so surprised about was this was Vaseline stage in 7-8 minutes, --- so I can see where formula does play a part in the saponification process for sure as different oils have different points at where they saponify - but really happy with this formula (I put it up there as well in the text part) Will be putting up another one next week done in a glass bowl, just letting it set, God willing I'll get that up. :-)

    Hi Valerie, just wanted to say thank you for all your videos. I tried one of your recipes and it didn’t go so well the 1st time around. But after my 3rd time around and scaling down my oils, I am happy to report I was able to get a pourable soap. The only reason I decided to use less oils is because I don’t sell soap and it’s extremely expensive to have to buy so many different oils. I have a better understanding on oils and your method in HP is perfection. Thanks

    I love everything about your videos, (of course! 😉) but one of my favorite things is seeing how clean the crock pot is and how little your soap discolors in your processes. This convinced me to try HP right out of the starting gate. My first batch came out so clean and light colored - I got a very pretty, simple utility soap for the kitchen and laundry. I will never again use this particular fragrance oil, but aside from the scent, I'm really happy with the results.
    I wish you could have been in my kitchen - you'd have thought I'd taken laughing gas! I guess one good thing about being a Calamity Jane type is that it makes you flexible and ready for anything! 😁 Next time I will not do nearly as much of a water discount and I will remember to heat the additives. Thank you so much for all that you share! 💜💛💚💙💜💛💚💙

No boredom here - and I can't shut down the brain at night, either! 😁 We have made two more batches and they're very nice, but I think I'm overcooking the soap, because the batter is just not fluid enough to pour, even with no water discount and after all the post-cook liquid additives. (Sodium Lactate, sugar water, 2oz aloe vera, 2T yogurt) We mixed the scent into one color at a time last night and that helped us layer the loaf, but I barely got a fork into it to churn up the colors and the remaining soap was too stiff to even stir! 😃 Repeated additions of water and microwaving finally got it soft enough to force it into individual cavity molds. And that was unscented! Tonight, I'm going to try getting the additives even hotter, and I'll have my electric skillet filled with deeper water and set to boil for the color cups and the utensils. Last night's loaf is so pretty, I can't even believe I made it - I wish I could post you a picture. Ocean Breeze scent with ocean waves design. Next, we're trying DoTerra Citrus Bliss and three colors - another EO said to accelerate - I'm a glutton for punishment! 🤣 Many thanks from us in Texas! 🇨🇱 We are some of your biggest fans!

How very kind those words are and very generous as well; thank you ever so much and i'm so happy these videos can help in any way at all....but, I sure don't want to be a queen , lol...big hugs..... that FO blend is a "huge" seller in that particular soap and it is loaded with coconut milk as well....the FO consists of: (for a 5lb batch) --- 4.25oz "Sweet Coconut" , 0.5oz "Rice Flower Shea" and 0.2oz "Mango Madness" --- all of those FO's come from Saffire Blue in Canada. I live in Nova Scotia, so I order from a few suppliers in Canada, and Saffire Blue, in my opinion cannot be beat for those particular FO's and another FO I order all the time there and is a big seller, actually my biggest seller is "Satsuma Jasmine Mandarin", just super beautiful. :-)

      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +2

      Hello Ariell Yappas, thank you for watching and you are most welcome. How long a soap will last depends very much on how much you bath, or shower, how hard or soft your water is, if you keep it dry between using it. For personally I would much rather have a soap be high conditioning and real creamy and full of lather then be rock hard. But you can tweak this formula to how you like it for sure. The way I look at it is, I soak in a tub about 5 times a week, and if a 6ounce bar lasts me 5-6 weeks , then that is great! People will spend two dollars and up for coffee and then a couple hours later pee it out, lol, so I enjoy having a great bar of soap that is good for the skin, rather then a rock hard bar. But I sure encourage everyone to do as they like. Thank you for asking.

      Hello Gail and thank you kindly, so glad they can be of any help or encouragement. You can substitute, Palm, Shea, Lard, but you will have to recalculate that on a Soap Calculator as they will have different saponification levels and require different amounts of lye...so you can just add that 7% onto the Palm or add Shea etc. and then the soap calc will give you the proper amount of lye. thank you for your question.

      hello there and thank you for stopping by; glad you enjoyed the video and that it may be of some help to you. I've been adding yogurt to 99.9% of my soaps for over 5 years and I also do yogurt soaps -- but when adding it after the cook at 1Tbsp per pound of soap, I have found it helps to loosen the batter, make it more manageable, and as well some of that yogurt converts to Sodium lactate, which is not only a great humectant and good for aging skin but it can also help to harden soap (sodium lactate that is). I add sugar to my soaps, and maple syrup, honey, barley malt, molasses etc. and it will help to increase the bubbles and add to the lather of your soaps -- I will say that I also add certain things for the properties they may bring, but sugar is just added for the bubbles etc. Thank you for your questions!

    Hi Valerie I have been having a terrible time with my CP soaps setting up almost hard right after blending in the lye water. Also, colours are morphing. It's insane because they are supposed to be fluid soap batters. Eg. I made Lavender soap the other day and no matter how much purple mica I added to the batter it just kept turning cream colour. My Peppermint soap blue shades - one turned pinkish purple and the others turned green. It's making me crazy. I am going to have to try your method to see if I have better luck. . Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety

      I understand about problems with soaps. What I found out about colors morphing is that some micas or colorants done work well with lye i.e. CP soap, so that's something to check when using or purchasing micas. I did have that happen before as well and now I know. Formulas play such a big part in how our soap sets up, turns out etc. If your using stearic acid, you need to soap at warmer temperatures in CP and if you use too much it sets up real fast. A 60 to 40 blend is a good number and anywhere in between that as well, for hard oils versus soft oils, but then there are soaps that break those rules as well, for example Castile soap, is all Olive oil and if you look at soap calc it would appear it would never set up, but it is a hard bar of soap. So many interesting things for sure.

    Those bubbles! I'm sure you have been asked before but this is my first video of yours I have seen but, what is the purpose to add sugar water and yogurt? do you know how long the shelf life is also? Amazing soap though I have so much to learn.

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +6

      Hello Hope Hall, thank you for watching. I've been soaping almost 4 years and for almost 4 years I've been using sugar. In the beginning mixed with my lye liquid and if I'm doing CP soap then I still mix it that way. But, with HP soap adding the sugar after the cook helps to have the batter more manageable. Sugar helps to make a lot of bubbles as well. So, I almost always add 1 tablespoon of sugar PP of soap. So if it is 3lbs then i'll use 3 tbsp. sugar andmix it with 2 -3tbsp. water, completely dissolve it and then add it hot after the cook. I've been using yogurt in my soaps for about 3 and a half years. I'm thrilled with yogurt in my soap and I normally use plain, full fat yogurt or as close as I can get, at least 2 percent if you can't get full fat. When you add yogurt to soaps after the cook some of it is converted into sodium lactate and that will help to loosen the batter and also make it hard. Yogurt also adds lather and creaminess. I use 1Tablespoon of yogurt PerPound of soap. Some soapers use more and i'm sure that if it's a heaping tbsp. it's fine. I do not deduct those tablespoons of yogurt or the water for the sugar from the initial lye liquid. I have a couple of soaps in my loft that are 3 years old and no spoilage at all. But shelf life depends on your oils/butters you use as well and the shelf life of those oils/butters. And the amount of Super fat and what you use for super fat as well. I normally Sf my body soaps at 7-8%. When lye mixes with oils/butters and it saponifies it becomes soap which is a salt product and if all your calculations are right, you should have not problem with issues in using milks or yogurt in your soap. I'm still learning everyday, and God willing I hope to continue to learn! Hope this helps out even in a small way. When I started I read a lot, I watched a lot, and I researched a lot , and it was worth it for sure. And don't take what I say as the only way as it's better to learn and do research on it as well. You will find differing opinions about many things. I would encourage you to enjoy, and find a niche where you are comfortable. then try some experiments and see what you like. I like my soaps to be low cleansing (which means low drying) and high conditioning and creamy and full of lather as well as some bubbles!

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +1

      Hey Daniel, you are no bother. from what you said it tells me it did not finish cooking. although I wasn't there and I don't know your temperatures or your formula, when soap volcanos, sometimes it doesn't finish all the way, and you have to stir it or whisk it. Re-cover it and let it continue to go through the cook. There are a few variables that will affect it, but when it is like that and your using a glass bowl or a microwave safe dish, pop it in the microwave, and nuke it on power level 7 for 30 seconds and WATCH it all the time in there. The reason it kept getting hard, because it didn't go through to Vaseline stage. HP soap regardless of the technique you use, for example, in the oven, on top of the stove, microwave, crockpot or in a glass dish, will get hard at some point depending on your oils, it is one of the stages HP soap goes through.

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +1

      Hey Tamara, you are welcome :-) and great question as well. The coconut milk is discounted from the original amount of the liquid used for this soap, which soap calc takes into consideration and gives you the exact amount of lye you need to make "soap". So for example, just say the liquid amount was 7 ounces and the lye amount was 3 ounces. If I used 5 ounces of water to mix with the lye (and you need to have at least the same amount of liquid as lye to mix the lye ) then that would leave 2 ounces of liquid left for me to use, and I would use coconut milk for that and add it after the cook. You can discount the weight of the yogurt as well, but I don't, as some of it converts to sodium lactate in the heat. But, once those oils and butters etc are mixed with the lye, it gets saponified and basically becomes a salt product so the shelf life of that soap would still depend on the shelf life of your oils. I do have 1 soap I kept that has yogurt in it at 1 tbsp. per pound of soap added after the cook and it is 3 years old and not gone bad. If you were to use way more then 1 tbsp. yogurt per pound of soap after the cook and not discount from lye liquid that might pose a problem, but I have not done that.

I think it volcano once & I stirred it and let it volcano into itself once more before adding SL & fragrance. I don't remember when I added the color and then plopped it into a mold.My batter was no where near this fluid! What would happen if you did not put it in the freezer & just left it out to set? And how did you heat the additives like the Maple Syrup & Sodium Lactate, microwave or hot water bath? I want to try this hot process again but will watch your videos a few more times! • @mosherbrian
      @mosherbrian Před 7 lety

      Hello Gina and thank you ever so much for watching and your kind words. I put my soap in the freezer personally because it helps it set up and not warp. I only keep it there for about 4-6 hours and that depends on the size, then I will take out and put into the fridge for an hour or so, then take out and cut and let dry. I put my maple syrup in a little glass dish and set it in hot water in a frying pan on my stove. SL I putin a little dish and just set it beside the burner so it is warm or room temperature, iv'e been trying different ways to add the SL, so I do it different at different times, just depending. You can use any formula you like, those with m ore hard oils versus soft oils do cook quicker and you always have to be careful. You are most welcome for the recipe andyou can tweak that how you like and make sure you always put through a soap calc, that recipe ends up taking a bit longer to dry, because of all the coconut milk.

    • @mosherbrian
      @mosherbrian Před 8 lety +2

      Hey Megan, and thank you very much. I do use the tapioca powder in "some" of my soaps but not all - I have found it does make it have an "off white" color andof course that will depend on your formula - but what I have found with it , is that it adds a silky/smooth feeling and I have found that it does appear to boost the lather! For this 4lb batch I was going to add 1and 1/2 Tbsp of tapioca powder mixed with 1 ounce of water (that 1 ounce I do deduct from my lye liquid), but you can just mix it with 1Tbsp as well, I do not heat that up as it will gel, so just before I add it I will mix it up really well and stir/whisk as i'm adding it, as you want to get it dispersed in there real well. So if I had a 3lb batch I would probably add 1Tbsp, but you can work with it as you like.

      Good morning jescbs58 - thankyou for watching and thank you for your question. I do use coconut milk in almost all my soaps, just not to the extent I used it in this one, the reason for that is , it's a lot of work making homemade coconut milk from a coconut, so I save that for this specific soap. I use coconut milk, without sugar, purchased for the rest of my soaps and do not use it at this high a %. Coconut milk is fabulous in soaps, but I do use all different kinds of milks. And they each bring their own specific things to the soap, especially when you have some customers that just prefer Goat milk soap.

      Hey Ruth Chery, thank you so much for watching and I hope you get a chance to see the other High Temperature Hot Process videos I just uploaded where they cook on their own. I'm actually not SF with the Coconut milk, I'm using it as extra liquid that I've discounted from the beginning lye liquid and adding it after the cook so it's more manageable for designing. For me coconut milk (this one has no sugar in it) is just super for lather and bubbles and even though I use goatmilk and buttermilk, I do prefer coconut milk for that. Hello Ruth, if you don't wish to use milk, you can use Aloe Vera Juice, you can use just water, you can use tea that's been strained, you could use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water, a mixture of lemon juice and water, the milk does give it lather, but if you add sugar to your water it will give bubbles for sure. And Apple cider vinegar gives lather, you could also use "FLAT" beer or stout, that will give lather as well.

      Hello Chrisavgi Papatheofanous and thank you for watching. That is the best way to start soaping, start slow, start small, start simple , read, watch , study, research and then begin, experiment and have fun, be safe too! You don't have to have complicated formulas, I do have formulas that are fairly simple as well, the thing I believe to be important is to make great skin loving, moisturizing soap. High conditioning and low cleansing/stripping/drying for our skin. You are so very welcome for everything and thank you for being so kind. Most of my formulas have fine sea salt in them, basically at 1 tsp per pound of soap and sometimes I will cut back on that depending on how much sodium lactate I use. Sea salt helps to harden a bar, and I only use more then that when I make my ocean brine bars.

    Thank you for the quick reply! Ok I worked the Soap Calc for a 2lb (32oz) batch. How did you come up with this part? How would i adjust that for 2lbs? Is the superfat included in the figures on soap calc? ( I used 8 ounces of Water and 2.25 ounces of Aloe Vera Juice, 9 ounces of coconut milk in the cook and 5 ounces of coconut milk after the cook. I superfatted at 8%.) Maybe I did something wrong because its not telling me how much Lye/Water.

    Hi Valerie, thank you for the amazing tutorial. I am new to soap making. I tweaked this recipe to add in the ingredients that are easily available to me. It was fine till the trace and the volcano. Then at the Vaseline stage, the soap completely clumped up on me. It was a hard ball--- I don't know what I did wrong. Could you please help me out as to why the soap became a big lump? And how to fix it? Thank you.

      Hello rabia Farhan thank you for watching and you are welcome .... when you say you "tweaked" the formula with whats available to you where you live, did you run it all through a soap calculator before you used it?.... I would love to help you if I can, but I need to know the formula you used, i.e., what percentages you used of what oils/butters , how much lye liquid you used? i.e. 38% or 40% etc. Then I need to know what additives you used, i.e. honey, yogurt, and I need to know what liquid you used for your lye and how much, and if you saved any liquid for after the cook etc.... so if you could tell me all those things, then I can see "maybe" what happened...and if you like, you can email me: valeriemosher@ns.sympatico.ca We'll see if we can find out what's wrong...as it shouldn't have done that. :-)

      Hello Andrea Orgyan, thank you for stopping by... although this is a 4lb batch and it is done at 38% liquid - the liquid added at the end is from the initial amount, except for the SL, Yogurt, and the tablespoons of water added to sugar and maple syrup --- what "will" affect the length of time for this soap to harden is all the homemade coconut milk, as that has fat in it too, and that is what will require a longer time 3-4 weeks to harden up --- I've done HP soaps at 33% and 35%, and depending on your formula you can get "manageable" batter to do designs no problem --- but, not all of my formulas or batches of soap are really easy and fluid, and personally it is better for me to just have them manageable...this particular soap is absolutely gorgeous on the skin and it is one I keep in stock all the time --- I have changed things around a bit since then with this soap and as soapers we should always be looking for better ways and better formulas if we can --- certainly and indeed don't do what I do as there are many ways and I would encourage you and everyone out there to take what they can use and discard the rest, read, watch, experiment, learn, share and make great for the skin soap! :-)

But you can take it now and rebatch it, just grate it up with gloves on in case of lye and put it in your crock on low, and add tbsp. water at a time, until it is moldable and is Vaseline stage.

    How did you keep it fluid like that? usually when I watch other soapers do their hot process it starts to harden immediately after they take it out of the pot, but yours stayed liquefied. The color of the soap came out smooth and beautiful the bubble were frothy like a mountain 🗻

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907

      Hello sandraand6690. Thank you for watching and for the kind words. I put my formula on there for that soap just click show more and it will show you the formula. I used a lot of coconut milk in this particular soap, it's how I make it all the time and it is beautiful on the skin. You can use the formula or tweak it how you like. No matter what HP technique you use to cook your soap, if you save some of the lye lqiud amount for after the cook, if you put 1tablespoon of yogurt PP of soap, if you add sodium lactate and if you keep everything covered so it keeps it moist you can have very manageable soap. Not all my formulas come out as loose as that one, but most of them come out very manageable. All of them come out with great lather and bubbles. I use 1 tablespoon sugar PP of soap and mix it with water, for example if I were doing a 3lb soap I would add 3tbsp sugar mixed in a little glass dish with 2-3tbsp of water, I would dissolve it completely and add it hot after the soap is finished cooking. I add the yogurt room temperature or cold and added after the cook, and whisked in completely. So you can use just enough lye liquid amount for your lye amount , for example if your lye was 4 ounces use 5 ounces of liquid to mix it, and use the rest of the liquid amount for after the cook. Thank you for your question.

      Hey Beth and thank you very much. Is your batter manageable or looser and then when you add your EO/FO does it thicken up a bit? Mine does that quite often...And, some of my formulas are more manageable then others and I have a few that are loose. When you cook your batter do you finish it when it comes to Vaseline stage and there is no lye left? or do you cook it longer? Do you add the yogurt and sodium lactate at the end and do you keep it covered? There are a lot of variables. Usually when mine hits Vaseline stage, I will add the xtra SF, sugar water, yogurt and SL and if I've saved some liquid i'll add that. Then I'll let it set covered for about 5-7 minutes then add my EO/FO Then put into the individual containers that have been heated up with hot water.... something you can do, is to add 1tsp hot water to your individual containers, sometimes that will help loosen it up, or 1 tbsp. to the entire batch. Please don't hesitate to ask more questions or you can also email me at : valeriemosher@ns.sympatico.ca

      Hey Janice and thank you so very kindly. When you use Soap Calc put in the percentages that I've given: Soap Calc will automatically give you the exact amounts of those items for the amount of soap your making. So for example if you are doing a 1lb, 2lb, 3lb etc, soap batch, all you do is tell Soap Calc what size batch, fill in the percentages where applicable for your oils and butters, then you tell it to Calculate the formula and then right below that, once it is calculated, you click the text that says "view" the formula, it will pop up a window that you can look at, and or print off and see the exact amount of everything to use... including your water and lye amount !

      Good morning Jennifer That 8% was added upfront and was indicated on the lye calculator. You can add after the cook as well. I normally add 5% upfront and then the rest afterwards, so say i'm adding a total of 8%, I would indicate 5% in the soap calculator for the SF upfront and then I would multiply my total amount of oils by 3% and add that amount in SF after the cook.

SL is supposed to help with fluidity, I have found that when adding it warm right after Vaseline stage, then adding room temperature yogurt works better, but if I didn't have SL, I would definitely want to have yogurt as I find that works the best --- actually cooking with "yogurt milk" (yogurt mixed with a bit of water and using in place of GM or coconut milk or along with coconut milk) works super nice. @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 6 lety +2

      Hello Maris Rios, thank you for watching and you are welcome. How / when you add your soap can be a personal preference - for me, when I divvy up my total liquid amount for my soaps, I make sure I have at least enough water/liquid for my lye and usually an ounce more, then with whatever liquid I have left from the total amount I use for various things, If I have a bit of milk i'm using that 's part of my total liquid, I will usually use some in the cook and save 1-2 ounces for after the cook --- when I use less liquid in the cook, it gets real thick and I find it cooks better if it isn't so very thick, so I always try to save some for after the cook - of course, each soap can be different and I don't always do it the same --- you can save all the milk for after the cook or use it all up front, that is up to you for sure! thank you for your question.

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 5 lety +2

      Hello HomeStead HeriTage --- I appreciate your question and request ---- the very reason I use percentages is so that anyone anywhere can use the formula ---- so what you would do is take those percentages and put them into a soap calculator with exactly what you want, so for example when you go to "Soap Calc" (the soap calculator which I use) you put into the top part the amount of soap you want to make, and for example if it is a one pound soap you click pounds and put a 1 into the box, the amount of liquid is at 38% which is fine, and the super fat is at 5% which you can change or keep or make higher. then you pick your oils / butters etc and put the percentage in under the percentage sign, once you have that done you click on "calculate and it gives you the formula in exactly what "weight" you would like as you picked from the top of the formula (ounces), then you print off your formula, or just read it off the screen, or write it down off the screen on a piece of paper -- it would be a lot of work for me to take every formula write it in ounces or grams, as I could only do that for one size, example would be one pound soaps, but what if someone wanted a 3lb soap or a 5lb soap, then I would be writing 3 different formulas for the 3 different weights, and that would be lovely, but I also have a business and a family and so with percentages it helps everyone no matter what size batch they want to make....I hope this makes sense to you and is helpful. It is also incredible good practice to run formulas , regardless of who you get them from, through a soap calculator and it is important as a soap maker to be able to make up your own formulas and know how to use a Soap Calculator. I hope you enjoy your soaping journey.

    Thanks for the recipe! But i don't know what crisco is. Is it some kind of vegetable oil? Can I use something else?

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +2

      Hello Zsuzsanna Benko and thank you for watching and you are most welcome for the formula. Crisco is "shortening" but you can rework that formula in soap calc, take out Crisco, add 2% more palm oil for 7% palm oil, and add 7% to Olive oil, for 20% olive oil (100% oils) This will give you identical numbers with just a bit more in INS, which is fine! so take out the Crisco, make palm oil 7% and make olive oil 20%!

    Is it true you can take any cp soap recipe and use for hp?

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +1

      Hello DasaMLopez, yes, for sure you can, with the ONLY difference being that you should use 38% lye liquid, as in CP some people use way less then that..... and you can safe some of your Super fat for after the cook if you like or add it all in the beginning , up to you.

      Shalebrook Handcrafted Soap thank you for your quick response. I hope you don't mind if have another question? I've watched and read about zap test. I thought zap test was taking a small amount of the soap and touch to your tongue. If it zaps, lye is not fully cooked out. Yet I see ppl posting on groups got zapped , soaps done? I figured I researched wrong?

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +1

      You are welcome. The truth is this, if you take some cooked batter from HP soap, and you touch your tongue to it and you get "zapped", your soap still has lye in it. So if you get zapped it is not done, so you need to continue to cook it, or if it is cooked and Vaseline stage, I would say that the measurement is off and you will need to rebatch.

    Thank you so much for your videos! Can you use other milks like almond, cow's, or soy milk? Also where did you get your hanger? Thank you

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety

      Hello Dar S and thank you very much for your kind words and you are most welcome. Yes, you can use whatever milk you like, I use different milks, but in this particular formula I used unsweetened coconut milk and a lot of it, and it does take a bit longer to harden because of all the coconut milk, and Coc. milk adds incredible lather. If you do use other milk, I would suggest that they be unsweetened, and remember Goat milk, will turn it a more tan color, but all good yes for sure. The hanger tool my husband made for me from 3/16th aluminum rod and covered with 5/16 plastic tubing, but you do not really need the plastic tubing when doing HP as it is already saponified and you don't have to worry about the lye. Then he bent it to fit my molds by putting it in the vise and he allowed for the bend in the rod as part of the length.

      Thank you! One more question, How do you label your soap since it has yogurt and sugar and maple syrup?

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety

      Hello, I live in Canada and we label according to Health Canada rules and regulations, so we have to label in INCI, so I use the INCI for those ingredients on the back of my packaging.

    Would you be kind to give measurements in grams please. In % is very difficult for us who are new in soap making
    Thank you and best regards

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 4 lety +3

      hello Suzana, thank you for stopping by --- the best way to give a soap formula for the oils is in percentages even when you are new because that way you can use the percentages for "whatever" weight you would like to use i.e. pounds, ounces, or grams --- truly, the best thing a new soaper can do is to learn to use a soap calculator and if you go to "Soap Calc" calculator you can pick your oils and butters, put in the percentages I have given and "choose" the weight you would like i.e. grams, then when you view your formula it will be in grams ! So I would encourage you to do that as it is one of the most important things you will learn when you are making soap and you can then tweak other peoples formulas and change things as you would like....as well, I do not have the time to change all my formulas to grams, I hope you can understand and appreciate it. kindest regards

    Valerie hello!!!! ...what is the difference to add sodium lactate at the end or at the begining with the lye? thank you xx

    • @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907
      @shalebrookhandcraftedsoap7907  Před 7 lety +1

      Hello Beatriz, if you are doing high temperature HP, for me it is better to add after the cook. If you are doing low temperature HP you can add the SL to the lye when it has cooled down a bit (what I've read) or you can add after the cook as well. Up to you and what you would like to do or how you find is best. Lots of soapers do it differently. big hugs
