The trick with the hover view is just a mathematical transformation that takes a trapezoid and gives back a square. So you don’t even lose quality since the part of the image that is far from the cámara is being “upscaled”.

We were all hype on this. Months and months later and Zoom still doesn’t work with it consistently. I’ve updated all of my software, even just the other day, and my iPhone 14 Pro camera still freezes up during calls all the time.
This „computational wizardry“ is mostly just a projective transformation which is very easy to compute and by no means in any way something new. 3D video games have done this since the 80s in real time (and 90s in true 3D). It’s neat that it is packaged so accessibly and wireless and well integrated and with so little latency and such quality, I give them that. Those are the real accomplishments. It looks like a cool feature and I am looking forward to have it on my devices. But just fire up Photoshop and apply a transform to a layer and you get, in essence, the same effect.
I have a question: how does using continuity camera affect your computer’s performance (if the processing is done on the computer instead of the phone)? It would be interesting to see a stress test with and without using that feature.
That is helpful for online learning, as instructors can do solvings and explinations on an ordinary paper on the table while being able to share it live with students
I did a test with a pop socket holding the phone and not the Smart Case, and it seems to work, at least with it being fairly centered on the device like mine is, so there’s another option.
That’s a lot of development resources spent… they have bigger goals I bet. I think that distortion will be fixed and maybe they’re developing a better (built-in) 360 camera.
Hey question, how do you disable the “feature” of being able to copy text from photos. I absolutely hate when I’m just trying to zoom in and instead I’m copying text.
My guess is I think they got the idea from car navigation cameras currently in most premium models, with how they also generate a top down view without having a drone hover over a car.
