I'm thinking about adding some shiplap to my ceiling. The shiplap will add about a half inch to the ceiling. Will i be able to use the existing covers or do they sell new ones that are larger? Thanks for your time and video!
It depends on which sprinkler head you have . If you have a Globe 1 inch drop sprinkler head then its possible . The Globe Sprinkler Head has a deep escutcheon . Any other sprinkler head then you would need to remove the head and extend the pipe or remove the head and add a listed 1/2 inch male x female threaded coupling . Your best option would be to remove the Sprinkler Head and replace it with the Globe 1 inch drop . If it is a residential property then you would need a residential sprinkler head .
Unscrew the escutcheon and see if it will give you a 1/2 inch gap before it comes off . If it does then your lucky . Also look at the deflector inside the sprinkler head , it should drop below the finished height of your new ceiling . If you do need to change the sprinkler head you dont need to cut the drywall ! The Sprinkler head has a special wrench that attaches to a 1/2 ratchet and it fits inside the Sprinkler head . I would recommend asking a Sprinkler Fitter to do the work .
It is for decoration , the cap has solder links holding it in place , when the temperature reaches 135 deg it will fall away , the deflector will then drop down and the head will activate at 155 deg .
@@SprinklerFitting one more question: regarding the blue cap at the beginning of the video, if you leave it connected to the sprinkler head, is the sprinkler head going to work or not ? (Is it going to prevent the heat from reaching sprinkler head).
No you just need to unscrew and remove the cover .Tin foil works well to mask off the inside as its easily removed later . Just be aware how to shut off the system and how to drain it in any case of emergency .
I'm in Vancouver, BC and have been looking into starting an apprenticeship for sprinkler fitting. It seems to be a very intriguing career, how has your experience been in this industry?
Overall it has been a great decision. The job is not static ,it changes constantly . At times the job is physically demanding depending on the type and size of pipe.Your brain is always thinking .There is so many different types of systems that you will never get bored.Start now while you are young and in 4 yrs you will be making 40 plus an hour plus pension and health benefits. Thats if you join the local union. Call them and ask to join . They will take care of the rest .

Appreciate your fast response, looks like I'll have to do some research but at least it's doable. Thanks!

Ya, absolutely. I just remembered I have a friend that used to work for Grinnell and was certified in sprinkler systems. Thanks!
Is the concealing cap (the white cover put at the end) just for decoration or does it play some role in activating the water ?
It is for decoration , the cap has solder links holding it in place , when the temperature reaches 135 deg it will fall away , the deflector will then drop down and the head will activate at 155 deg .

The blue cap is to protect the head from drywall mud and paint . It needs to be removed when ceiling is finished .
Yes it will delay the heat from activating the sprinkler head .
no dark gloves on finish work, white gloves or wash clean hands, god vid
Gloves were new . Company policy is gloves at all times .
I’m doing paint work in my garage do I need to shut off the water before removing these covers to mask off ?

@@SprinklerFitting thank you so much I called my local sprinkler installer and had some questions answer as well thank you
Can you change a pendant style for a consealed one like this. Is it plug and play or is there more to it?
If it is a regular style pendant then you would need to cut back the piping to accomodate the concealed head .
the pendant needs to be same listing approval, k factor, temp and the piping re piped. This I am sure of.
Thats correct . Need to replace the old sprinkler with same spec new sprinkler . Can change models but specs need to be same .
