I love that when India subsidized their rice farmers it's inefficient subsidies because of electoral motives, but then when the US does the same it's "supplemental income and safety nets". And it's good because farmers are good for food security and the local economy

Also same applies to crop insurance and similar government schemes provided by govt of India, they are among the best in the world but considering India has been Agricultural heavy economy, in today's capitalism economy, supporting marginal and smaller farmers is getting very very hard

Statistics and data can be presented in many ways to present different viewpoints , and on top of that , the videos sets a narration. So yes this is not just a data but a narrated video.

There was almost no rain in most parts of India in August, a core monsoon month. That's why rice export was banned; not due to elections. Food security is at the core of the export ban; not some elections.

@@Thamizh23india banned that rice which is generally used by masses and poor people in India. So that govt. ensure that poor doesn’t suffer from scarcity. Basmati and Gujrati rice are costlier rice and mostly used by rich people so even if the price increase they can afford that and indirectly most of the rich Arabian countries also purchased only basmati rice so no loss to Indian economy. A very smart decision by government if you want to understand.

It’s not due to elections that Indian government has banned rice export but it’s due to el-nino effect. This year India received 40% less rainfall and next year it’s predicted that India will receive up to 70 % less rainfall. Food security is what government is looking into. If we keep exporting like nothing will happen who’s gonna meet the common man’s requirement of food when there is a crisis ??, these so called experts did not make this point at all.. such a shame!!!

International meteorology have adopted "El nino" spanish words for boy child. Originall discovery was where Pacific Ocean surface temperature west of Chile is associated with less rainfall and even severe drought. "La nina" , girl child, is associated with more rain and floods.

Dont spread false science. The rainfall on a particular area NEVER decrease. It change in frequency of quantity and the number of days it rains, but the amount of water stays constant. The condensed water vapor has to fall back on earth to go back into the sea or in the water bodies.
Already rice is sold at 30-50% higher than last year in Local Indian markets.
If there was no export ban the price would have doubled.

This is the first time in many decades it increased by 30-50% .
Tomatoes and Onion prices increases are seasonal one-time it goes to ₹100-₹150 but later comes back to ₹10 .

What I got from this video is that "a small investment from US Congress" can help subsidize Chipotle and Anheiser-Busch's ingredients, since almost all of US rice stays domestic, and they're the biggest purchasers named in this video.
God forbid we ask those companies to just pay market rate for their ingredients
Riviana Foods owns most of the rice farms in the US and they are the ones lobbying congress for corporate welfare. $334 million dollars revenue last year. If they don't get a $250 million subsidy they will not be able to pay Ebro Foods enough profits to afford new Jets for all the Board members. Ebro Foods made a profit of $651 million last year. These are not mom and pop farms. They are big business.
The US agriculture industry is already heavily subsidized. That is why many countries can't compete with US farmers in certain crops, for example corn. The reason is because food is considered by American policymakers as national security, it makes the US less vulnerable to food shocks in the event of a war or geopolitical rivalry.
I like it when India does the same thing its 'electoral motivated' while when the US does the same its 'Systematic Public Subsidy'. I can't, with the Hippocracy .🤓

This is the exact same way us europeans feel. Airbus is one example there where the americans complain about airbus receiving subsidies while ignoring the amount of subsidies boeing receives. Now they will most likely complain about airbus not being fair because boeing planes does not sell to the same level as airbus even though its boeings fault for not taking their safety standards seriously.
Nobody can become financially successful over night. They put in background work but we tend to see the finished part. Fear is a dangerous component, hindering us from taking bold steps we need in other to reach our goals.
India had one of the worst monsoon on record this year as there was almost no rainfall in the month of august which put a lot of pressure on the government to ensure that there are stocks to prevent something hazardous. Also, singapore,phillipines and many other SEA countries have contacted the indian government for exceptions and the Indian government has granted them exceptions and rice will be exported to them. Simply put, India does not want to be a victim of rich western traders sitting in their manhattan offices speculating on indian rice which will put inflationary pressures on india

This episode do not reveal full information. India's rice ban is temporary. It has 3 years of rice stocks in its FCI warehouses. The stock is feed the people if there are two years of consecutive monsoon failures. In addition the farmers are converting rice fields in to more profitable crops such as fish and shrimp farming. India put ban on export of non-Basmathi verities, that are produced in South India such as Sona Masoori, Ponni, BPT etc., that are produced in the deltas of Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri river systems. The reasons to impose ban are compelling as the stocks of these varieties are going down and per capita yield is also going down due to water shortage/crop migration etc. The rice that go to Africa which is unpolished, broken, and subsidized has no ban.

As a Filipino, I feel envious to the Indians because despite the massive population of India, their govt is verymuch capable of providing enough food for the citizens. The Philippines, despite being considered as an agricultural country, is not capable of producing enough rice and instead imports rice from Thailand and Vietnam. Political leaders have come and gone but because the country’s government is being run like hell, the Filipinos are facing a very dark future…

it's due to geography
It's not all about politics, it's also the Philippines' geographic location. Thailand and Vietnam don't experience super typhoons, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions every year. Even little Cambodia can export rice since they don't experience extreme natural disasters. Their harvest is almost always guaranteed. Agriculture is always at the mercy of mother nature.
Indian Ban on rice exports has nothing to do with politics or elections. The reason is entirely domestic food security. The failure of monsoon rains in 2023 and erratic weather is bringing down rice security stockpiles. Further, already skyrocketing rice prices in India is mainly responsible for the export ban. Concern for people's food safety and not politics is the reason behind rice export ban has to be noted.
I hate the narrative of this video. It feels like they're villainizing india for its export ban. I'm from SEA and feel like it's my own country's responsibility to ensure food security and independence from importation. Also, why are they using American perspectives when they primarily need their rice for their kellogs. It's not even their staple.
I'm in Europe and love short grain rice. I am glad they are trying to take care of their farmers and ensuring a stable food source.
Subsidies reduce food output, as farmers can produce the same but still get paid. It also increases prices as consumers pay at the checkout but also in their taxes.

Meanwhile I'm in Singapore, which imports ~90% of its food (as we don't have much land & find it more profitable to use them for secondary & tertiary industries instead, & anyway even if we grow our own food it'll still be more expensive than neighbouring countries (which are in earlier stages of development)), & food export bans seem to be more frowned upon here, as they seem to be portrayed as a futile attempt to fight against economic principles. When Malaysia banned chicken exports to us (in 2021 I remember) the local press was warning Malaysia that it might permanently lose Singapore as a customer even after lifting its ban, as Singapore by then would've probably already started importing from other countries instead (albeit further away & thus more expensive). Probably because an export ban raises the risk of food shortage & thus food inflation in my country. However if the exporting country is facing a genuine food shortage then I am also thinking what other measures it could take to remedy the situation

The last week I was shopping at this dep. store "More" and was shocked to see the price of "idli rice" gone up from ₹35 to ₹100/kg. Two days ago, it was ₹130/kg. Idli rice is a staple in South India. Rozana Basmati is cheaper at ₹85 a kilo. We are having Basmati Idlis !!! I can afford it but I'm not buying. If I buy it, I'm supporting the supply moghuls who think it is ok to rip off people at Diwali.

India made an excellent decision to make rice more affordable for Indians. Other Asian and African countries might want to consider growing their own amaranth or quinoa for their people since it can replace rice but is more nutrient rich for consumption and is a drought tolerant crop.
India is also the largest producer of millets.

Then, western countries send free rice and put rice farmers out of business. It depends on the country because it is very diverse since it's the second largest continent in the world. Some areas are tropical desert, jungle, islands etc which will determine if they can grow rice.
Africa has its own indigenous species of rice different from Asian rice. Europeans found vast fields of various species of rice being grown all over Africa, and took African rice and growers to their colonies in the Americas. A variety of African rice that came to be known as Carolina Gold was the major rice grown in the US until it was replaced by the Asian species of rice.
There are varieties of African rice that are grown on dry lands without paddies, or on hillsides
In south india we are small scale rice growing farmers for generations, until last decade when we we gave up as it was a losing game year after year, now price is slightly higher but still not enough to break even, so our farms are lying empty and we have switched remaining land to grow commercial crops like coffee pepper etc
India is the #1 rice exporter, but it has stopped exporting due to fear of climate change and lack of fertilizers. Luckily, Vietnam stepped up, but the amount is barely match that of India.
I am actively in charity. Vietnam stepped in and helped the world but this also increase rice prices within the country. Many citizens in poverty really hurt by price increase. For example poor old citizens (70s, 80s, 90s year old) is making 30,000 VND a day! Rice in Vietnam is 20,000 VND a kg.
i dont know why indian govt did that but as rice producer i sold govt 2000kg rice and have enough rice for 3 years ,may the stop because of there freebees to 800ml and even they dont require it because more than 80% of producers ,its all about vote bank politics.
I don't know why you can't understand such a simple thing, due to inflation, war and lack of proper monsoon timings our rice production has decreased and if we continue to export without considering domestic demand it'll lead to a massive crisis. Stop blaming the government and try to understand economics. People are already suffering a bit due to the rise in vegetable prices. @@AbhishekSingh-zv2tn No you BJP idiot. That's because rice production *has* declined this year due to insufficient monsoon rains. Google "rice production lack of rains India" and read up. Southern states have seen paddy output drop. And south India consumes more rice than the north. It's still a significant chunk of India's population and if they allowed exporting more non-basmati varieties, then than would result in higher prices for Indians back home. Basmati rice isn't what most Indians consume on a daily basis.

These reports used to be Beneficial and helpful when we didn't had research or survey organizations within The Country but since we have them its better to focus on our own reports...and btw those reports are much more Harsh, Critical and closer to reality than western reports which are based upon their Intrests.

This was a bad scam when it was new now it's just sad.
It still amazes me that we, all nations and people, keep trying to tackle so many of these issues on our own. India especially has so many issues that really requires a massive collaboration and investment which would benefit everyone. But that isn't profitable so *shrug*.
In India (especially in our States Odisha, in some states as well) Government is giving free rice 5kg/person every single month to 30 million plus people. And also most of our farmers are focusing on growing rice.
That's wild, 1 kg rice takes around 2000 - 5000 laters a clean water.

After living in Korea, I eat rice with almost every meal. I eat about 3 cooked cups a day. I love it! Every time I need to lose weight I just eat some chicken, rice and a vegetable for about a month and I can lose 30 pounds with 10,000 steps a day.
In Korea, we don't consume the rice that much anymore and we can't consume the rice we grew each year and we also have to import the rice from US. It is just trade issue.
As an Indonesian, I didn't realize there was a rice crisis. Sure, prices have hiked up but they're negligible. It's wheat that we have a problem with. Prices have gone up by 50% or more. Hopefully, it doesn't get that bad.
India export ban has some exceptions. As some of the SE Asian countries requested they continue export to Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia etc

Those that have been hoarding what has now become very expensive would then start releasing what they hoarded for sale at very high prices to earn abnormal profits

I live in India Madhya pradesh, In my town we have not good yield of rice and neighboring Chattisgarh the rice bowl of india also faced the same issue.
Chattisgarh is not the rice bowl of India, rather West Bengal is the rice bowl of India. West Bengal is the biggest producer of rice in India and specifically East Bardhaman district of West Bengal is called Rice Bowl of India.

Out of that 6000 varieties In West Bengal, about 5600 rice varieties were cultivated, of which 3500 varieties of rice were shipped to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) of the Philippines during the period from 1975 to 1983 for preservation. Today in West Bengal mostly 610 rice varieties are grown. Today IRRI has a total 16,746 rice accessions from India.
In Chattishgarh 22,000 folk varieties are claimed to exist, but many folk varieties are synonymous. Recently 76 varieties of rice from Chhattisgarh have been included in the 550 worldwide variety of aromatic rice. This gives an idea of exciting varieties In Chattishgarh which is probably around 100. But more accurate estimation can be found in IRRI record.

Rice from states such as Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana could be unsafe to eat in quantity as it's grown in fields that were often used for cotton production in the past whereby pesticides were used to protect the cotton crops from insect predators.
Here in Louisiana we alternate raising crawfish and growing rice in the same fields. We are not having any problems with our rice over here.
One of the biggest problems for development aid to east africa has been that foreign food is so cheap, that mechanized agriculture cannot run at operating cost if it has to sell it's products locally. Thats why even when the equipment has been given for free, the Indian rice and food aid has outcompeted local production, thus preventing the development of local mechanized agriculture. This might finally wake up the local governments to set sufficient import controls to allow for the development of the local economy.

Sure some farmers may maintain really old equipment but I think that is survivorship bias rather than the standard course of action. I'm betting farmers during the 1950s paid mechanics from the dealer to repair their brand new machines. I say all this to say I don't think the right to repair has any major impact on farmers.

We don't have the resources to pump the economy full of free money the way we did in 2008 without causing hyper inflation. About 50 countries around the world are on the brink of economic collapse. Oil is higher, food is much more expensive. Yes there are recessions every so often but there are also far worse things than that and I think we are primed of another financial crisis. It may not happen today, or this month, maybe not this year, but its coming all the signs are there.

It is important to understand that the rice subsies in india arent just a matter of feeding the population of india or though they do that. They are also effectively a welfare transfer payment into rural communities. India is a country still of small scale farmers in the way the west just isnt. More than 40% of the population work in agriculture. Thats down significantly from a decade ago but the equivalent figure for the us is 1.6%.

Just watched the video. What are people complaining about. Why shouldn't Indian government priorities the needs of the Indian populace. For the uninformed, there were some major floods accompanied by droughts that severely affected the rice output in 2022. Coupled with the increase in wheat prices and the increase in Oil prices during the Russia - Ukraine war. India foresaw a drastic increase in demand for rice for it's export but at the same time had to factor in the fact that Indians would themselves not be able to afford the increased prices. Additionally, a lot of Indian rice is imported my rich countries who have connections with a lot a powerful middlemem. Thus, India put a temporary ban to better manage and streamline any and all exports on rice. Don't worry about the farmers, they were still getting paid less before all this as well. There is a good chance that the farmers are making more now that the govt stepped in.

Rice takes up too much fresh water to grow. Exporting rice is essentially exporting water, with India's water tables drying up and shortage of water everywhere, India should dial down its rice exports for atleast a decade or two until better water management practices and solutions are implemented

The water serves as a natural form of herbicide. However, growing in water is not required, which is what makes rice such an interesting grain for home gardeners.

Long white rice is way more convenient in this regard - while being more nutritious it almost never causes indigestion. Potato has almost no proteins which is also a minus.

As someone who suffers from Celiac Disease, this gives me so much anxiety. I deeply rely on rice as the cornerstone of my diet. I can't imagine the stress of losing this staple while also living in a third world country. This is bad, folks.

I get hit with something I didn't know or even suspected: Anheuser-Busch is the biggest consumer of rice in the US !!! I had no idea. I never thought that more rice goes into brewing beer, which, according to German rules, is not even supposed to contain any rice, than is sold for food production in this country.

Similar story happened in 2008 and 2009. Philippines rationed rice making it harder for the Filipinos to obtain the energy we need.

well you only need to add proper amount of water to control the softness/hardness. no need to mix different kinds of rice just for this purpose.

India did give free grains because of the Russia-Ukraine war. Some European countries stockpiled that grain to pump up the price. Later they resold it at a higher margin.
Later India stopped grain export and said if you want the grain we will give you it on a case-by-case basis. India still giving grains to countries who really need them.
