A 42 INCH SJAMBOK

The sjambok or litupa is a heavy leather whip. It is traditionally made from an adult hippopotamus or rhinoceros hide, but is also commonly made out of plastic. A strip of the animal's hide is cut and carved into a strip 0.9 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 ft) long, tapering from about 25 mm (1 in) thick at the handle to about 10 mm (3⁄8 in) at the tip. This strip is then rolled until reaching a tapered-cylindrical form. The resulting whip is both flexible and durable.
A plastic version was made for the apartheid era South African Police, and used for riot control. Peter Hathaway CapTstick describes a sjambok as a short sword like whip made from rhino pizzle leather that could lay a man open like a straight razor.
The sjambok was heavily used by the Voortrekkers driving their oxen while migrating from the Cape of Good Hope, and remains in use by herdsmen to drive cattle.
They are widely available in South Africa from informal traders to regular stores from a variety of materials, lengths and thicknesses.

I LOVE PLAYING WITH BOTH THE 42" AND THE 54" VERSIONS OF THIS WEAPON. (SO MUCH FUN)!!!
THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY THAT THE DIFFERENT SIZES ARE WIELDED. BECAUSE THE SJAMBOK ISN'T A TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ART WEAPON, THERE IS NO STYLE, OR FORM TO STUDY AND NO TEACHERS.
SO EVERYTHING IS JUST FREESTYLE. USING IT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A PIONEER OF SORTS...
I HAVE NOTICED IN MYSELF, AS WELL AS IN OTHER MARTIAL ARTIST, A TENDENCY TO USE THIS WEAPON LIKE A SWORD. ESPECIALLY THE 42" VERSION. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE! IF IT WERE USED LIKE A SWORD IN A REAL FIGHT, THE WEAPONS POWER WOULD BE VASTLY DIMINISHED.
IT FEELS LIKE A SWORD WHEN YOU HOLD IT AND YOU CAN DO ALL THE SAME MOVES AS YOU CAN WITH A SWORD. BUT YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER THAT THIS THING BENDS LIKE CRAZY, WHICH ELIMINATES ANY THRUSTING, OR STABBING.
BOTH SIZES ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. BOTH ARE CAPABLE OF STOPPING, AS WELL AS DISARMING MULTIPLE ATTACKERS. (NOT AGAINST PEOPLE WITH GUNS, SPEARS, OR SWORDS THOUGH).
THE SJAMBOK COMES WITH A PLASTIC TETHER SO YOU CAN'T HAVE THE WEAPON TAKEN FROM YOU. THIS IS A VERY BAD IDEA!
YOU DO NOT WANT THIS THING ATTACHED TO YOUR WRIST! IF SOMEONE GRABBED YOUR WEAPON, THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO CONTROL THAT ARM TO SAY THE VERY LEAST. (I DITCHED MY TETHER RIGHT AWAY)!
