      *update*
I called a mechanic friend of mine, and he said that white layer of fluff is called a "pre-filter" and doesn't need to be removed.
It's purpose, at least in theory, is to trap larger particles in that lower density mesh, before they can gunk up the finer material, extending the life of the filter.
He said the filter performs just as well with or without the pre-filter, so removing it isn't a problem. With or without the pre-filter, he recommends checking it every 10k miles and replacing as necessary.
He lives in a pretty rural area where a lot of the roads aren't paved, so he's always sucking in dust and clay. He said the pre-filter can extend the life around 1,000 miles in those conditions, or about 10%.
      *end update*
I bought a microgard engine air filter and it came with a woven white mesh "cap" of additional filter material, similar to a home hvac filter, glued to the intake side (where the points of the "v" shaped fins are normally visible). Am I supposed to remove that?
Never seen a filter like that before, so I pulled it off, but it was so deliberately glued to the filter and left so many strands of fibers behind that I'm not sure I was supposed to remove it.
If I install it without spending extra time plucking all those fibers off the filter, they will surely go straight into the engine. But the white filter mesh itself seems like it's too restrictive, and the filter didn't seat properly in the box with it attached.
      Anyone know what's up?

When I think of the cheapest filters- I think FRAM. Cheap, garbage, and sold at WALMART.

remember we are not talking about oil filter we are discussing air filters. When it comes air filters they are good but the oil filters are not good. The product is different in each line of product.s

@@VaultofEpicFacts Not really a perspective. Third party peer review showed it don't trap much compared to standard filters and is really good for track day. Which makes sense as if the air flow is better it's can't be catching what it needs to
