0:45 "The power curve is really wavy, it shouldn't look like that on a 911. It should be much smoother"
3:00 "These engines always have a wavy line, I'm not concerned"
Damn Charlie, make up your mind son!
What’s the real answer lol
He said at the top. Wavy lines at the top are common, but not in the middle.
You just hear what you want to. Open your ears.
This is why I don't go to "mechanics" with a dyno. Kudos Gazza as I came to write the same comment basically. The hypocrisy is unreal. Let me do a translation:
"Oh so you've cleaned the injectors, replaced the cats, and exhausted all the options I was planning on fixing this wavy graph. In that case these engines are meant to be wavy like that"
When I watched this I thought, "This is the very definition of BULLSHIT!!" Making shit up as you go...
Your 996 deserves a new stainless steel exhaust system ;)
and some sexy wheels
and a new IMS. I'm amazed he has not changed it. Should have been done first thing after purchasing
Not the conventional thinking in the UK...it's a US thing.
Errr first thing I had done to my 996 from a specialist in Leeds £1099+VAT peace of mind priceless.
Which bearing?
I love the way the electric boot spoiler went up because the car thought it was going fast on a road😂
And why wouldn't it !
It was doing 70+mph according to the wheel speed so it should come as no surprise.
Kristian Larsen I felt bad for the car, because it was being pranked by its owner.
@@LordPrometheous It's like object-permanence tests on puppies. Kinda makes you cry a bit.
Rather strange comment... :/ Of course it does...
We need more of this instead of car reviews... Even though they are also great!
Like that Matt does real world tests and nice to see you review older cars. Fantastic video!
I do like the way you approach these videos with the enthusiasm and enough naievety to ask the questions that most of us want to ask. Keep up the good work.
Wow very nice technical configuration video
Don’t forget aftermarket filters don’t filter as well ( 75% vs 99% for original ) as original filters and can screw your maf if over oiled.
i really do love project/ wip videos like these.
When you first put the bmw on dyno at 6:00 I was noticing how steady it was and just then you said that a nice smooth curve I was noticing how steady the car was on the machine itself. Seemed real smooth. Nice video thanks for posting. And yes it seems these usually give some slight power increase but mostly people keep them on because like them I like the sound better.
The panel filter should always be seen as a supporting mod when pushing on further. Probably see benefits post exhaust and remap.
Brilliant video. That’s the sort of stuff we wanna see Matt.👍🏻
I drive an f56 mini cooper s which with the oem filter actually hit 208bhp & after fitting a k&n panel filter dropped to 198 bhp but with such a negligible drop the increased noise ,especially windows up believe it or not was well worth it &im convinced the throttle response is improved and there really does seem to be more popping on the over-run! I have an induction kit en rout & am really really interested to get it dynod again &really try put this to bed once & for all, awesome content. Cheers
I installed the K&N filters in my Macan S, which require powerwashing and oiling yearly, but I too didn't really see a big upgrade. The COBB tuner, which remapped the ECU, did make a big difference on the high end, put not so much on the low end where I wanted to see gains. It also eliminated the exhaust sound, which as you say, is really a big part of owning a Porsche ! I reset me car back to factory settings, and returned the tuner, but the filters remain. Thanks, well done video !!
Mat you are the best, that is informative and put to rest a lot issues power hungry guys had.
I love the e36 328i, reminds me of my old 323i years back :)
Nice one Mat, I have been using one of those for a while and yeah, the sound got quite a bit nicer. Performance wise, it felt happier to rev, but nothing noticeable on the road, now I know why.
I also got the semi solid engine mounts recently, found it sharpens up everything slightly but there is some harshness at about 4k which I dislike. Will try slightly softer mounts and see.
I love these dyno videos!!
More vlogs and videos like this, they are very nice.
Finally, I've hoped for this video
Great video you guys should definitely do some more like this
I love your blue on sand beige. Inspired me to get a midnight blue on sand beige 997. Wow car.
Try fabspeed's dual intake, you'll absolutely love it, esp. The sound
Great video thanks for posting.
Nice video. A lot of us always wonder about air filters and their alleged power upgrade. Thank you
Just like my old 328is, I had m50 manifold, simota carbon induction kit, remap, and saw almost the same 230bhp.
More videos on the E36 328i please....
great video, thanks for upload !!!
An honest review....thank you
Nice to see the 911 again Mat!
Great video/vlog. Please make many of those.
Matt, what about a BMW E60 M5 you said you would like to own?
Thanks for the video. I myself was just considering a K&N filter for my 996.2 which cost about 4.5 times the amont of the stock filter. Ill just buy the stock air filter and do an exhaust upgrade later for my sound/power improvment.
Believe in JESUS today, confess and repent of your sins. No one goes to heaven for doing good but by believing in JESUS who died for our sins. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(John 3:16)🥳
More videos like this , Thanks
Had a carbon clean on my intake, injectors and turbo.Made a big difference.Since the Carbon clean I use V-power fuel and Redex.I could definitely notice the difference. My car stock is 270BHP.Its Had a REVO stage one and now it’s 322.3BHP.Induction kit next week.Great video mate 🏁🏎💨
Reflection Car Care Detailing we re talking about just the filter man, not the entire system :Dddddd ofcourse u feel the difference after full carbon cleaning lol, irrelevan
Max Cohagen I was saying that a carbon clean makes a difference to BHP!
Reflection Car Care Detailing , ok thats true
The IMS is not as much to worry about if you're regularly running the engine at highish RPM. That's because the bearing was designed to be lubricated when the oil pressure gets nice and high and your oil splashes around with some obviously making its way into the bearing.
Like any bearing (as opposed to a regular transaxle) the IMS does not like to be spun while dry.
Great to see the Porsche again - nice car
Plain oil fed IMS bearing retrofits are available nowadays.
If it’s a oiled fabric type filter, that’s more particulate in your engine oil
This is interesting, you should do more videos about this. You have mention the Leon cupra(s3 & golf r) is a performance bargain, how would that be improved with just a quick remap which bumps the power up to 360hp and equivalent torque? Or would it just make it un drivable ?
Hi Matt, very interesting test. I would not of thought the outcome would be like that. Btw I like the 996👍🏻
Love these sort of vids really interesting cheers matt. (& crew!)
Awesome comparison.
i only use K&N or Pipercross filters, they work, save you the cost of replacing the paper one each service (just wash, dry and re-oil once per year), and as you noticed, better sound, especially the models that have the rubber bung at the side (remove bung for warm fuzzy feel). :)
The wheel spacers do wonders for the looks on a 996. Highly suggest them as a mod.
I put a K&N performance filter that has an extra air intake "hole" on my 1.6 ecoboost and measured before/after figures through OBD and the kn increases the turbo boost by several PSIs and improved throttle response and sound. I was surprised with the outcome on my car.
In addition your aftermarket filter is (should be) serviceable where paper elements aren’t, they’re throw away item which cost you every time a services due. If you replacement paper filters aren’t that expensive then whatever you like but it’s it’s a high cost item then a good quality serviceable aftermarket filter is worth a look.
The engine has been tuned to run with the standard filter from factory. Unless you are doing a remap, there is no point in getting a k&n or similar
I used to own a 328 Sport Coupé just like that - also in Forest Green, I think it was called. I'm on my 7th BMW and have driven many more, and the 328i remains my favourite. One of the last with a cable throttle, which plays a major part in that opinion, but they were also pretty light (same weight as the 996 - around 1300-1400kg). You also didn't get a clutch delay valve or any nannying electronics - just enough tech to make it a good car.
Wait so one minute the wavy dyno line is bad and after it’s dynoed again it’s perfectly normal for a flat 6 porsche?
pendulum1824 yeah, odd how he changed his tone on that one
I fitted one of those K&N filters on my 03 C4S and removed it after noticing dust inside the plenum. Sound is great but, at what cost? Anyways, great video as usual @Carwow !
Great video contributions for the petrol heads out there (such as myself!)
These filters work on some cars I fitted a K&N in box filter on my 309gti and I noticed 3 benefits nice induction roar 2nd definate increase in power and it actually filtered the air with the old filter there was always dust in the intake track.
The Porsche! Pleased to see that again. The Beemer sounds a LOT sweeter though.
I'm using K&n filter for engine and air cabin but not looking for performance as it reuse after cleaning. I did good savings when using them and cleaning them regularly.
I did notice after a while washing the k n filters 5-6 times the cotton starts to wear thin and holes appear also my air flow sensor goes bad even with light re oiling the filters went back to standard filters on my e55 amg and happy no more problems with sensor
Beautiful E36 green color with BBS my god !!!!!
I have a 997 Carrera. Fitted a K@N and for a about 2 years I kept chasing an check engine light. Multiple issues, including vacuum leaks, but the final fix was to put back a standard air filter and put in a new mass airflow. My understanding was the oil from the filter can contaminate the MAF. Either way, this caused my engine check light so beware.
Mat tour standard Ecu could be pulling things back a wee bit. Get a pro remap done with the performance air filter and see the difference. Hope it helps.
Isn't this the place where Colin (car throttle's M3) was dynoed?
That Guy Yep!
That Guy - I think this place has been on Wheeler Dealer's TV programme as well.
phil's (Car throttle's MX5) first ever dino run was tested here aswell
All of car throttles dynos are done here
Not sure about the 3.4 you have but in my 3.6 996.2 the air filter is simply 7 screws and then disconnect the air intake from throttle body and the air filter goes in and out with no problem.
How long had the performance filter been in for ie was you comparing apples for apples age wise?
Some drop in performance filters save you the need to replace them as often as paper filters. Just need to keep it clean. Maybe a tune will help with the gains from that mod but it may also depend on the car.
I love sitting on my back Porsche and watching the stars
Run some expensive fuel system cleaner or ATF in the fuel to clean the combustion chambers, intake valves and injectors, then change the fuel filter.
Most of the restriction comes from the intake tubes so unless you change the intake to a proper cold air intake system with exhaust mods and get it tuned to match you will only mess up the tune and lose power.
High flow filters all let more dust through so the cost of your "sound modification" is reduced engine longevity.
After market filters might also filter less dirt in air ... So how else can we improve ? Intercooler, super charger?
Matt loves his Porsche and you can see it in his eyes LOL
+carwow
Mat, if you want more performance for your Porker, what you need is a performance exhaust system and a remap with the new exhaust fitted. This way the new map will be optimized for the new exhaust system.
Air filters are a placebo for performance but it sounds better. Thanks for the insights! Just saved me buying two air filters for my Porsche.
We did the SAME test in a VW JETTA 2.0 TSI and we got the SAME results! The K&N in box actually reduced 1-2 hp of the car, but we had a little better fuel consumption.
Get that IMS done if you are worried. When I bought my 986 S it was on its way out and I put the LN ceramic ball bearing in which had a lifespan of roughly 75,000 miles. I could have done the direct feed but ceramic was cheaper and 75,000 mile rating is fine by me. And I have a 6 year / 50K mile warranty on the new bearing. Can’t go wrong with being safe.
Have you thought about doing this same test with a RamAir full induction kit? That would be worth watching.
Wow Jacks car looks really nice.
Would have been good to see other filter types compared as well as the panel filter
That's a really good sounding car.
Also re-usable filter. As they can be cleaned and re-used compared with OEM paper filter.
Really nice vid!
Please help me : when you change the air filter, you need to change the ecu about it as well isn’t it ?? Cause I would like to do that on my 2014 fiesta and I am not sure changing the air filter is the only thing I have to do in the process :/
Can't you clean the KN one?, which would be a money saving along the way compared to the paper. Also was it clean for the test?
OMG, this E36 it's so fucking beautiful, i'm in love 😍😍😍😍
review the bmw 328i!
qUantUmpants yes!
Better than that car anyways
Do it! You'll be surprised how well the chassis handles
e36 328i owner here.. love my car
It's a piece of shit.
Seeing Matt get the tools out and change that filter. Was like watching my missus mow the lawn for the first time.
matt has a sick collection
Nice Boston Grün Coupe for the cameraman! I have a 28i 'Vert in the same color. :)
Thank you to K&N for supporting this video lol
I really think you should consider a restoration build, it would be great content and you would enjoy the car much more. Like Car Throttle did with the restoratrion series with "Miles" that was a huge succes with everyone gets a new love for an old Skoda Octavia. Please do this it with be really fun to see the car get in a better shape
Cool. Great video.
Would’ve been cool to see a dyno test before repairs, right after dyno test after,l repairs, then dyno with stock filter, then lastly with performance filter... kinda felt the filter swap was backwards
If you over oil K&N, it will reduce air flow and give you lower mpg. You have to make sure it's not over oiled after cleaning
Try Royal Purple HPS(High Performance Street) oil or AMSOIL.
Please try a entire fuel system cleaner with a service with filters and synthetic oil with a additive like Ceratec or Xenun VRX500
nice video great idea btw😀
K and n in a 2018 dual jet swift with an exhaust mod and K and N makes a big difference in the higher rev range, seems to have lost a bit lower down, but the car is leaking something nasty from the engine bay so it’s not running right anyway...
That BMWs' looks have stood the test of time really well.
You need to re trigger the fuel characteristics map er initialization , drive for at least 50 km , only then you can realize the benefit of the after market air filter if any or any mods that affect the fuel air ratio. For that matter .
I
If you just want more noise Matt then plug the intake resonator (silencer)
Mat, did you ever get the suspension knocking noise fixed?
Love this 911, I have drove one , witch hade soft tuning, was accelerating so brutal and nice.
For that air filter, you should had to drive the car for at least 20 miles, so that the computer can make the fuel trimming adjustment. Otherwise, he would not know ,what's with the sudden changes in the air volume.
Believe in JESUS today, confess and repent of your sins. No one goes to heaven for doing good but by believing in JESUS who died for our sins. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.(John 3:16)🥳
BTW that 296 number is at the crank, ~280 at the wheels was normal when new.
How about getting one of them performance stripes or splurging on some stickers; I hear they can give you a HP boost of 15-40hp and Torque by 20-25%. You should look into it.
Hi So did you get rid of the other porsche you had all the problems with?
@carwow can you review after market electric throttle controller/ booster ? if they're useful.
These vids are great
