    Myths In Mental Health Stigma.
My 2nd myth has to do with ideas about schizophrenia being rare and uncommon.
In fact, schizophrenia affects nearly 1 in 100 people, and there are billions of us on this brilliant blue dot hurtling through space and time!
    That's common enough, I think!
BC Schizophrenia Society is running a campaign to raise awareness about myths and facts regarding schizophrenia.

What causes Catatonia? My brother has been in this state for over 2 months now. He's got a PEG feeding tube and is skin and bones. How can he come out of it? He's on Ativan but it's not working.

Cause is a complex question. Some kind of underlying trait, or habitual trait training, mixed with stress including history, personal, trauma, will associate with some kind of locking up (the "catatonia") and becoming nonverbal, and so on. I've not experienced that excessive of catatonic states, and I am unfamiliar with how to help come out of it. I would think trying to spend significant time with him could be influential. Even if you're just sitting being calm reading or whatever. If there are moments he might become verbal or otherwise responsive, you have a better chance reaching him if you are present when that happens.

Some lack of sleep and stress mainly. I think. I go up and down a bit, which is what my dr would pretty much call "the schizoaffective mood instability"..
