  • This is part three of an incredible three part journey series of tough 14er hikes. In parts one and two, I completed the Grand Slam of 14ers in Durango and the trifecta of El Diente Wilson traverse to push for Wilson Peak. Now just two days later, I go for my 8th 14er in just six days. Join me as I ascend Snowmass, peak 57 of 58 in my quest to complete all the 14ers.

I've got to say that the view from Snowmass Lake with the morning Alpenglow shining on the peak was probably one of the most picturesque places I've ever seen you capture. I could sit there for hours. Way to go on #57! I agree with several of the comments that mentioned they never knew you fell 400'. I would love some details on that....sounds intense! I once slid 30-40' down slick ice and that was enough for me haha. Can't wait to see what is in store for #58! Keep it up...you are my favorite hiking professor!

I relished a lingering and lounging not wanting to ever leave lunch at that gorgeous spot at Snowmass Lake backpacking 4 pass loop in 2016.

I have watched many of your videos as part of my scouting out an upcoming 14er. This was the first one that I had actually already hiked and I really enjoyed seeing it again through your eyes. When I was there last year, August 2019, I arrived at that stream crossing and determined that there was too much risk in crossing on wet rock (there was a good bit more water coming down it then vs in your video). I tried going straight up the scree field but I couldn't get the footing that I needed to make it up the very steep top portion. I went back down and found some dry rock a little further down past the traditional crossing. As I was working my way up towards the trail at the crossing, I saw a gentlemen walk across the trail to that water crossing. I could barely see him as I was working my way through some growth. Seconds later I heard him yell "oh ####" and heard him as he slid down that stream. I heard him again, now down below me somewhere followed by another grunt as he had slipped a second time and slid further down. At this point I was running scenarios through my mind of what I would need to do, thinking the worst had possibly happened. I decided to get up to the trail and try to locate him. I am very happy to report that I saw him quite a ways down, on his feet and back on solid ground, headed down. I was so glad he was okay and so glad that I had not tried crossing it. One thing that I have learned with waterfall hiking is that you simply do not put your trust in wet rock. It just takes that one slip of the foot. Thank you for all of your videos and I look forward to scouting out the next 14er with you.

Hey Jason. It's a great question. Capitol is harder and not by much for several reasons. Distance and difficulty. For Capitol it's not just about the knifes edge, yet the challenge of route finding afterwards to the summit and back to the knifes edge safely. Maroon Peak route finding for me what hard, yet I wasn't feeling good that day and I still believe Capitol is harder.
