Love this kind of video ! Make another one even longer with all those voicings that you like the most ! No matter how long ,it will be fantastic !
it's so much feeling in these chords, so much colour, so many worlds open up.
It's like that wine taster that discovers anything else but the taste of grapes in the wine, so the flavour is so much more than the actual fruit it's comes from
Your passion for music is just dope to watch bro
beautiful!
this is super helpful, thanks for posting. for #6 i think it’s a little better to look at the EM7 chord as E-B-D#-F#-G# just to keep continuity with the key. it’s a little thing, thanks again for your informative content!
What a soulful mo-fo you are !
This was amazing! Thank you so much for sharing Noah!
Pure gold, thanks Noah for sharing !
Immanuel Konadu you’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.

“Altered” my day for the better! Many thanks for sharing these with us
Thanks Dave! Glad it's helpful. Let me know if there's anything specific you'd be interested in me covering.
Noah Kellman I am always super interested in neo soul chord progressions, ideas for different ways to create moods/sounds/atmosphere and clever ways to resolve getting back to the key centre. Find myself getting caught up and lost at times or just sticking with the tried and true. Also more on voicing chords as you demonstrated in this video was super cool 👍😁
@@losalamos666 Awesome, thanks for the feedback, Dave! Much appreciated. I'll definitely keep this on my mind as I put together more content!
Well done haha! That altered chord may have been my fav I never knew about alt chords until this video, I’ve been using it in everything lately
Thanks a lot!
This what im lookin for, on point explanation , thanks man

Thanks, Elvis, and you're welcome! Is there anything specific you'd like to learn about in future videos?
@@NoahKellman Not sure if you've done a video or not but i'd love to see your take on chromatic progressions ( dirty loops' style in particular)..
Great video... Thanks so much Sir Kellman!!! 🙏
You're welcome! Glad it's helpful man.
Noah you are one of my favorite jazz and R&B/Soul piano instructors
Hey, thanks Ramon! Really appreciate that.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
My pleasure, Rafael!
This is awesome!!!
Hey, thanks!! Glad you like it, and hope it's helpful!
Amazing!
Thanks!! Let me know if there's anything you'd be particularly interested in learning about for future videos.
Speaking of the minor 3rd - your videos introduced me to Barry Harris yesterday. I started diving into his stuff and he said something that stuck with me. He said "The minor 3rd is the most important thing." and that was the end of his sentence. That's a pretty strong statement so I made sure to write that down.
number one is unreal
It's awesome!!! 🙌🏼 😃
Thanks!
nice voicings!! thank you!
You're welcome, Cynthia!
Great selection Noah.
MyMusicEducation Thanks, glad it’s helpful!

Albou Mcinen hey, thanks for checking it out! I will for sure. Do you have any specific topics you’d like to see me cover in the future?
Nice,thanks Noah!
Of course! Thanks for watching as always!
Thank you so much! It was very useful!
I thought RnB and Neo soul voicing is hard and I avoid that! But I’m gonna study and listen many musics and I’ll develop! Sorry for my bad English I subscribed you 😊 Hope your channel’s good luck! Have a nice day😆
Thanks so much
You're welcome. Glad it's helpful!
I've played that keyboard at guitar center... soooooo nice
Yeahhhh it's great. Definitely a favorite of mine.
Wow 😍😍😍
Thanks, Luiz! Appreciate you watching.
Once again, amazing content! Loving these voicings and I will certainly integrate some of them in my harmonic repertoire. Just one question regarding your intro: at 0:10 you're doing that lovely fusionesque comping thing where you move the voicing around. Could you elaborate a bit on what you are doing there? Seems like you're first moving the voicing in parallel by a half step and into another inversion... thanks!
thanks a heap!
my pleasure, John!
Thanks alot
For sure, you're welcome!
thank you
for sure!
best channel.
Hey thanks Luigy appreciate it man!
Dope man, keep them rolling!
How did you come up with theses voicings?
darksioul glad you dig them! I’ve just come up with them mostly through experimentation and searching for voicings I like. You can always take classic voicings and mess around by adding or replacing notes, etc.
Love those chords! Never understood why anybody likes #4 though :D the 11 on top makes it bearable
Coolest sound on the planet
Awesome very helpful!
Could you do your own jazzy rendition on “Greed” by Jiwoo? These chords remind me so much of that song.
tnx maaan
yeah for sure man!
👏 wow
Thanks, Tomas!
Excellent lesson Noah! Keep up the good work.
Love the Nord but there’s way too many buttons on that thing but I love my Montage. Anyway keep up the good work!
Can you do another "sound like the greats' set of excercises? Those were super useful
Hey man, missed this comment a month ago, but think you already saw the 20 Neo Soul Improv Exercises which is somewhat of a follow-up to Sound Like the Greats.
@@NoahKellman All good man, and yeah i copped the 20 excercises, enjoying them a lot so far
Very nice chords man, thank you. #pianocoach
Great lesson man and great chord voicings. I just couldnt make out the pitch of those bass notes you were showing us for context they were too muddy from that patch I think.
Oh got you- definitely been keeping that in mind for new videos! Thanks for the feedback.
Hey man lovely voicings.
The progression at 11:39 was so cool, do you mind explaining the theory on that? Was it just the same chord interval transposed to different keys? Why does changing key for each new chord sound so good? Thanks!
Hes moving the chords in minor thirds, and then resolves. That minor third transition it what gives that cool sound
@@kwamealievergreen4257 Can You please explain a bit more on how to do that?
He played the God chord!
Beautiful chords
Can you add with some cool progression in you next video, that would be great
Thanks a lot anyways
What was that groove you played in the beginning? It was dope!
Hey, thanks! It's me jamming with one of the backing tracks from the package I put out with Jazz Lesson Videos-- "Jazz Styles: Neo Soul". You can check it out here: www.jazzlessonvideos.com/product-page/jazz-styles-neo-soul
Hey Noah, thanks for sharing, great material! I want to dive into Neo Soul, where should I start from? Jazz Styles: Neo Soul or Sound Like The Greats: Hip Hop & R'n'B (NEO SOUL EXERCISES)?
Hey my bad for missing this comment before! Not sure if you already got something, but I would recommend starting with Jazz Styles: Neo Soul or 20 Neo Soul Improv Exercises. Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with.
Noah Kellman thanks man! Yesterday I got 20 NS Improv exercises. Great material indeed!
try this one: left hand play A right hand play GBCD.. now move that around chromatically and in 3rds.. Thats Nea soul
Number 9 sounds like Bob James 😎
I love your #7 chord (m11) but my hand is way too small to reach a tenth with the left hand. Guess I'll have to deal with another rootless voicing :)
Ah man yeah sometimes those are tricky-- Maybe just leave out the ten!
Maybe try a smaller keyboard, like guitarists pick a shorter feetboarx scale length if fingers are short?
Shiiiiiit you better plug it in in post!!!!
The 7# is the chord i have always used to end my pratice session it's so damn pretty with that 11
The 2# is just a Kenny baron voicing right?
This is what I call LUSH chords oh my 😱
we are having fun
What interface do you use? I'm having issues where mine disconnects my sound from logic and I have to start it up. Really screws up the creative process. Thanks for these awesome vids btw!
Hey Nik, you're welcome. I use a couple different ones depending, but usually a Scarlet 18i20.
@@NoahKellman I really appreciate the speedy reply. Subscribing ASAP, you’re the man 🤘🏼
Hi, Noah. #6 has 1-5-1 in the left hand, something you almost never do (or show). I frequently use the fifth in the left hand, arpeggiate, and I get a bit of a bass line.
Got used to stuff like
1-5-7 | 9-3- Melody note (kinda what they teach non-piano majors).
Please comment.
can you re-do with the new graphics so we can see the colored keys? thnks in advance
Oof Im not ready for this yet lol
I really need to learn what notes those numbers represent
Being a beginner I have no clue what keys I should hit
Now if you had said a flat, be flat m, etc I would have got the whole lesson
I was very confused when he got to the half dimished with the natural 9, since i did not understand how could the Min7b5 which is the vii degree only in the major scale or ii in Harmonic Minor does not have that kind of relationship in them and did not know that the Melodic Minor has 2 Min7b5 chords the vi & vii degree...So that Half diminished chord with the natural nine basically is functioning as the vii degree of the Melodic Minor Scale right??
Yah bro im practicing a lil but let me know
is there a pdf of this lesson on your site?
Hey man you mind if I use some of these voicings (in different keys and arrangements) to write a song? I’m not going to profit off it I just want to make a song I can share with people I know
Hey man sorry just seeing this- yeah no worries, go for it. Let me know if you ended up making one.
can these be done with any key/scale?
What do you call this sound effect?
For the 10th chord, in G minor , isn't the 3rd already Bb? So if you flat the 3rd again doesnt it become A?
Hey, yeah the 3rd in the key of G minor is Bb. You just call it a "b3" as the degree. If it was a B, it would be a normal 3rd, but because it's a Bb, you just call it b3. It doesn't mean that you flat the 3rd again. Make sense?
Ooooh does someone else hear Kamaal Willliams in #10?
Where are C major and Am? My favorites which use only three fingers. :)
Haha I'll have to cover those chords in a later video!
Noah Kellman Just kidding these are the coolest!
And you sort of _did_ cover C and Am triads too ...only they appear as upper structures with displaced bass notes...like C/D (or inversions of it) on A (new) bass would be an Am11, C/F over Bb is a Bbmaj#13(no3,7), Am/B over F is a nice Fmaj7#11, Am/D over F or Bb another nice major chord sound. Of course since you do have 10 flexible fingers there is not really a need to drop those intermediate voices unless you want to inject some sparcity.
What's a minor 1?(2.00)
"Ruthless voicings"
hahah love that
Please someone who explain to me how is he using the sustain pedal. Does He push it every time he change chords ?
Hey Mannuel, yeah I usually lift up the pedal in between each voicing.
@@NoahKellman Ey bro thanks I'm starting to Learn how to play Jazzy chords. I find ur channel very interesting thanks man 💪
that drum track at the beginning, where is it from ?
Hey man that's one of the backing tracks from Jazz Styles: Neo Soul, with Corey Fonville on drums. It's at JazzLessonVideos.com
what type of groove would you call that ?
