What is it about big bands which explains their enduring appeal? American writer Gene Lees described their characteristic sound as ‘one that will not go away’. Once heard, never forgotten in other words, and especially true for those who grew up with the idea that the best kind of fun came from dancing to the beat of a big band. The extraordinary popularity of social dancing prompted the formation of a great many travelling orchestras, some linked to a lushly romantic style, others committed to altogether hotter rhythms. There were dance halls on every corner and minor musical masterpieces were turned out by the score, all designed to tap into the upbeat mood of post-Depression America.
While it was entirely possible for these bands to survive and achieve success without ever entering the studios, it is unarguable that major reputations were built (and sustained) through recordings. Twenty-three of these top-rated groups are represented here. Some of them stayed around for decades, others were short-lived; some were led by fine instrumentalists, black and white, and a few by artists who are active still. Although the basic format doesn’t differ much - big bands usually include trumpets, trombones, saxes and a rhythm section - these selections clearly show the stylistic diversity of the idiom. I'm 93,I grew up❤with this music😅 my generation , was a wonderful time.sad time was the war.
Wow, I love your generations type of music so much! Even though I’ve never been through your era (from being born into the late 2000’s) there’s just something so nostalgic and fascinating about the past to me. Specifically the music and eras of the 50’s to the 80’s. I wish I was born around those periods so I could experience those wonderful eras, there really were magical. Even if there were wars and hard times back then, I just think it was a better time to be in then what we live in now.
I LOVE seeing all the older folks reminiscing in the comment sections of videos like this. I imagine it must be wonderful to have this technology you probably never even dreamed of when you were our age to listen to the music from your younger years on. 🥰

As a "late-life" only child, I grew up with this music. My parents were born in 1920 and 1921, and Dad served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. They played this music constantly in our home, and I consider it part of my soul. God bless you Mom and Dad!
My mom and dad were both born in the 30's, and my dad served in Korea. However, I was raised on classical, big band and oldies. I will be forever grateful to them that I was :)
Very similar early years growing up. My dad was a B-17 Pilot with the 95th BG. My mom worked in NYC at a servicemen club during the war. Music they loved was Glen Miller (who my dad saw perform at the 95th's 200th Mission party at Horham, England in September 1944) Benny Goodman, my mom loved Gene Krupa, Arte Shaw and well you get the idea. My Father served in the AA Corps too. I love this music. Both my parents loved playing these records, especially when I was young.
@@lindalyons3601 Do you know what bomb/fighter etc group he was in and when /where he served in the war? Music like this came down to me from my parents, even though I grew up on Rock/Jazz etc. this kind of music I played and enjoyed and now even more.
My parents were classical musicians in England and a lot of it was heard at home BUT, at parties and shindigs, it was only jazz, swing, and big bands music. How I remember all the grown-ups laughing, singing and dancing. And the children too.
This was our parents music. Would have never listened to it as teenagers (70’s) . Absolutely love it now (70)! So calming.

I personally have no memories for this genre of music especially because I was born in 2007. Yet the feelings that come through my body when listening to this style of music is so calming and just a feeling I cant describe. I'm genuinely grateful for the people who put in the effort to create such a wonderful genre of music.

Specially when we have night practices because the school is empty and it's dark. The feeling is just amazing, makes me feel like I've been rebirthed or something.
You should also consider listening to classical music. Tchaikovski, Beethoven, Wagner, etc. Written, arranged, composed and performed only live, by humans. No synths, amps, mics, or recording. Everything written on paper and recorded. Live. Every classical piece you listen to today is performed based on the written pieces of the masters. One person wrote all the parts , for all the instruments. Pretty impressive when you compare it to todays music.

Timeless music of the Greatest Generation!
I used to listen to big band music in the 70's on 78 records. My Dad was a bombardier in the South Pacific, but he died in the 50's in a Air Force plane crash. I was born 6 months later and this music makes me feel closer to him. Thank you.

I was born in the late 40s. Raised on my grandfather's farm house. All my uncles were in the air corps. After the war they worked as civilians at a near by airbase. On weekends (friday to sunday evenings) my grandfather along with my young aunts hosted parties on the weekends for the airmen. Dancing and of course libations from friday to sunday. The memories and big band music will always be with me. The American music...the big bands may it live and be played forever .
Beautiful music; me Mom brought me well with Artie Shaw, Miller, folk like the younger soul, get on and listen, you’ll never regret it. I was raised by my mom (born 1924). Go for it 🙂
I was born in 1993 and my parents around 1960. This music resonates with me better than the stuff of their youth (70s and 80s rock pop and new wave) let alone thevso-called "music" of today.

I’m 54, grew up in the 80s and though it was the best time to be a kid….then I heard this music and instantly realized, I was born in the wrong generation. I experienced pleasure, and a kick in the balls at the same time!!!
I have memories listening to this kind of music. I was born in the 70s but my grandfather was born in the 20s and this is the music he grew up on. So riding in the truck with him as a young man this is what I heard

❤ I got the greatest gift in the world for my first birthday present. That was VJ day I was raised with this kind of music in the background, and no matter how much I love Bluegrass and Willie Nelson and ELO. This is the most soothing music for my soul.😂
I knew no one that listened to this music nor was it played in our home. I was born in 78 and have an extremely eclectic palate. I heard big band music in all the old gangster and war movies i watched and just love the music from them. Im also a person who believes people should dress up when out and about. I used to be trapped in the wrong decade, now it's a whole other century.
Big band era died in 1949. Our music has gone down since. So sad...it needs to be restored...

So you see, it’s not just the music, it’s the memories this music etched in my soul. Only I didn’t know then I know it now: they were making love. No! No that kind, the kind that only couples in love truly feel. “I’m getting sentimental over you”

My dad would play these albums at night over and over on his record player in his room!! We could hear it all over the house!
I got the love of big bands from my dad. When my kids were young, I took him to a place one night that had a big band show. We danced a lot. Great memory. My mom and brother babysat for me.
I was born 1951,this was still on the radio when I was a kid and was my mom and dad's music. Learned how to dance to this stuff, wonderful.

My Dad was in the Army during WWII. I didn't come along until 13 kids later in 1969. I grew up with every 70's genre and the 80's hair bands and dance music. I even loved the 60's rock and folk music because of my older siblings but those tunes, even the great ones, dont stand up to these classics. You really had to be talented (all around music/dance) entertainer to be in any kind of show-biz back then. Man I love this music. Miss you Pop and thank for your service during the Big One!
Similar story here, Pop was my grandfather and I loved dancing with him to this music...used to wish I'd been around during WWII.

Our Jazz Band in high school (I was Class of '73) played a lot of Big Band numbers....our band director was a big fan. At home, my Dad would put our local "big band" station on when he didn't feel like watching TV in the evening....his favorite band was Stan Kenton's. And then my cousin, the professional musician, played sax in the 1970's incarnation of the Glenn Miller Band for 5 or 6 years.
As a result, I enjoy this music every bit as much as my late 60's-mid 70's progressive and psychedelic rock.

Roughly 40 years ago, in my teens/20's, I could never see the value in Big-Band music. Now that I'm well into my 60's, it has dawned on me how *classy* this music genre is, and that there was likely a great deal of work put in to make this sound so *wonderful!*

My greatgrandfather, not the murderer mentioned in a previous comment, but a different one, was born in 1921 and celebrated his 100th Birthday a few days ago, he grew up with this music and I still love it. He didn't remember me, but he was 100 years old and he never was my branch of the family all too much, provided he was in Massachussets and would spend the winter in Flroida, his furniture children living in both those places, whilst we were up in Maine.

I was brought up by my Grandparents, who i called Mum and Dad and during the war they danced to all this with Daddy throwingmy Mum over his shoulders, through his legs etc.. and still did when they were older. So Glad i grew up with such Amazing music !!!!

I play trombone in a 40s style jazz band. Before the pandemic forced them to close their doors to non-resident-family visitors, we rehearsed in an assisted living center. The residents would come to our rehearsals and cheer for us, since we were playing the music they grew up with.
I compare that to a really good Beach Boys cover group. I'd be there for every rehearsal, singing along with them!

My parents were born in 1907/1913. They listened to this music a lot. Another wonderful thing was my siblings stretched from the 1940's to 1960's I had a real education when it came to listening to music.

I didn’t grow up listening to this. I grew up on oldies, classic rock and good country. I was introduced to this music by a video game. And boy I’m glad I was. I passed up fallout 3 when it came out, writing it off as a game I probably wouldn’t be interested in. Several years later I got it. And fell in love. It took a lot of the concepts from the 40s and 50s and brought them to life in a video game. I had always loved the setting and styles of pre and post World War II America. And this game made it even better.
Fallout 4 is even better.
