    Demand for the melodious sounds produced by British Dance Bands in their halcyon days remains very strong. One can view them as a refuge from the discordant mish-mash that constitutes today’s world of popular music. To meet this need, we are pleased to present this collection of twenty-two tracks, each one by a different orchestra, transferred from the original discs, all of which were issued between 1928 and 1943.
    How appropriate that the first track is by Jack Hylton and his Orchestra. This was the great show band of the 1930s. Not for them the routine of the fixed hotel, restaurant or ballroom engagement. Prestige was maintained and enhanced by regular appearances on stage at theatres and halls not only throughout Britain, but also on the continent. Frequent sessions in the recording studios produced a flow of 78s on the HMV and Decca labels for almost twenty years. Did You Mean It? was made in December 1936, just as Edward VIII’s predicament was belatedly revealed to the nation; happily, this did not affect a sparkling performance by Jack’s orchestra and his own vocal group, The Swingtette.

    I DANCED AWAY THE NIGHTS DURING THE WAR TO THIS MUSIC AND THESE SONGS. I WILL CELEBRATE MY 94TH BIRTHDAY IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. THE BRITISH BANDS WERE SO PRECISE AND EASY TO DANCE TO. THEY NEVER MISSED A BEAT. MET MY HUSBAND IN 1941 WHEN HE ASKED ME TO DANCE. WE WILL CELEBRATE OUR 74TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN SEPTEMBER . MANY HAPPY MEMORIES OF "OUR SONG" WHICH WAS THAT LOVELY SLOW FOXTROT - "FALLING LEAVES". I NOW LIVE IN CANADA BUT WILL NEVER FORGET THAT LITTLE BALLROOM IN DERBY ENGLAND CALLED THE RIALTO. THE SIGNATURE TUNE OF THE BAND THAT PLAYED THERE WAS "MOONLIGHT AND ROSES". MY DEAR FRIEND BETTY HAD THIS PLAYED AT HER WEDDING - AFTER ALL THESE YEARS WE ARE STILL IN TOUCH AND REMEMBER THOSE HAPPY DAYS WE SPENT CARRYING OUR GAS MASKS & "TIN" HATS EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT SOMETIMES WITH THE ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS FIRING AWAY. IF WE EVER HAD TO MISS THE DANCE IT WAS A MAJOR CATASTROPHE...LOL... GOD BLESS ENGLAND.

      Lovely memories for you amongst the difficult war years. You really can't beat a lovely 'dance hall' and the music that goes with it - I was at Blackpool's Tower Ballroom recently and it always gives me goosebumps!

    • @jeanmozley8442
      @jeanmozley8442 Před 5 lety +21

      BLACKPOOL WAS ALWAYS THE WORKING MAN'S HOLIDAY RESORT - THE LARGE FIRMS HAD THEIR HOLIDAY WEEK AT THE SAME TIME AND CLOSED THE FACTORIES DOWN COMPLETELY.. PEOPLE WHO COULD AFFORD IT THEN MADE A BEE-LINE TO BLACKPOOL.. IT WAS MORE LIKE HOME FROM HOME THAT WEEK AS YOU COULDN'T WALK 10 YARDS WITHOUT MEETING SOMEONE FROM YOUR WORKPLACE. HAPPY MEMORIES -
      ONE OF THE BEST FOOTBALL PLAYERS (SOCCER) - LIVED THERE AND WE STAYED AT HIS SMALL HOTEL ONE YEAR WHEN ON HOLIDAY. I REFER TO SIR STANLEY MATTHEWS. STAN'S TEAM WAS OF COURSE BLACKPOOL -AFTER THE WAR ENDED, MY HUSBAND ALSO BECAME A PRO. SOCCER PLAYER FOR DERBY COUNTY F.C. AND PLAYED MANY TIMES AGAINST SIR STAN. THEY BOTH WERE CHOSEN FOR THE ENGLAND TEAM TO TOUR CANADA FOR 6 WEEKS IN 1950. FIVE YEARS LATER WE LEFT ENGLAND FOR A LIFE IN CANADA AND HAVE LIVED IN BEAUTIFUL BRITISH COLUMBIA FOR MANY YEARS. I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR "GOOSEBUMPS" WHEN I THINK OF THAT HUGE ORGAN PLAYING IN THE TOWER BALLROOM------ I GET THEM TOO. LOL. .@@PastPerfectVintageMusic

      When courting, my parents would go to the ballroom at Blackpool most weekends, and we holidayed there plenty. The ballroom is still wonderful - but the Tower and environs are pretty grim. Not cared for and preserved as it all should be. I've enjoyed reading your memories, and lucky you in such a beautiful place as B.C. - you made a good choice!. Thank you :-)

    I still have a CD set, "The Great British Dance Bands". Every New Year's Eve, my late husband and I used to put the CD's on, roll up the carpet and dance! This music brings me to a lovely world; I think of ballrooms with potted ferns in the corners, everybody in formal attire, and a moonlit patio or balcony.

    The Yank writing these words is fascinated with the great British dance bands of this era. I adore the crisp bouncing rhythms, elegant arrangements, and straight-forwards approach of these dance bands. I can just image dressing in White Tie and Tails and dancing the evening away at the Mayfair Hotel, Kit Kat Club, or the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. Delightful! "Lady Jane, may I have this dance?"

    We never should have put this era away, there was no need to ever retire it. Al though we could retire some of the so called rock music?? This kind of music is just good and fun. ❤

    I love this musical era. Nearly as good as 20s and 30s US bands such as Henderson, Russell, Armstrong, Ellington etc.

    Gorgeous music! Does anyone know the name of the female vocalist in Roy Fox's "I've Got Beginner's Luck"? She sounds American - lovely voice.

      Thanks for listening and glad you're enjoyed :-) I've copied some of the booklet notes here for you which will provide more info: "... Roy Fox, who landed here in September 1930, fresh from leading his own orchestra at the Embassy Club in Hollywood. His immaculate turnout, coupled with an ability to play unobtrusive but effective cornet, ensured his popularity at the Cafe de Paris, hard by Leicester Square. I've Got Beginner's Luck was recorded much later on, during the Fox band's touring period, when Mary Lee, Roy's teenage singing discovery, was working with him on a full time basis."

    This is a lot better than the garbage they put today e.g., K-POP, Rap, Hip-Hop, Ghetto, etc.
