I love how Phil thinks that the only way he can break the time loop is by killing himself and Punxsutawney Phil at the same time
Sadly, it didn’t work.
Still, it was a good idea at the time.
In theory, Phil's thinking here is that, if he was successful, he'd be dead. But having lived through the same day repeatedly, it probably had turned into a living Hell for him, and being dead would have been better than dealing with the repeat loop.
Well, by this point he tried killing himself in several different ways.
He doesn't know that God is punishing him for having a cold heart until he changes and starts loving people.
@jeffw8218 yea I think he was partly insane at this point
He drove that car WAY too well. Theory time. BOTH Phils were stuck in a time loop. This isn't the first time they did this. The Groundhog learned to drive a car over the many times Phil forced him to in mental breakdown mode.
That seems plausible
Whether it his him or that groundhog, the driver slid that truck around that corner like a pro.
Either that or human Phil had his hands on the wheel out of sight and just pretended to let the groundhog Phil drive.
"He might be ok. Well, probably not now."
Totally improvised and outstanding!
Totally improvised? Possibly. But I'm pretty certain the actors were not actually there to witness the truck going over the cliff.
@@pirateofthecarabiners He was told to say something about the crash. That's it. Nobody gives a shit if the actors were present for the crash or not.

Agreed - "He may be Ok; well, maybe, not now."
Just brilliant film with intriguing story line and great acting. They mixed Comedy, Drama, Romance and Fantasy perfectly. Bill Murray shines here. Andie MacDowell was impressive too. The whole cast was great. I miss the 90's so much! They don't make films like this anymore
Couldn't agree more. It's one of the best comedies there is.
Even though its a great performance from Murray, apparently he was a total jerk on set though. Half the time they couldn't find him to shoot scenes, leaving everyone waiting around forever. It got to the point he was so unreliable and hard to work with, they required that he have a personal assistant that would not only take care of him but most importantly keep tabs on him so that she could by phone relay where they were. Murray agreed, but on the condition that he could pick the assistant. He hired a deaf woman that was unable to communicate by phone (this was before smart phones with texting) and while she could speak sign language she couldn't speak intelligibly and Murray didn't know sign language, rendering her impotent to help with the problem.
Don't forget Needle Nose Ned the head
My little cousin cried after this scene because she realized the groundhog was in the truck when it exploded.
@Főfasírozó But human was in the timeloop and woke up next morning 6 AM. For animal that was it, death . Like old man he tried to save, he died .

That's the first thing I would have done if a time loop happened to me.
David Gonzales shouldn't you figure out its a time loop first before you off yourself?
Really? You wouldn't have a little fun first like Phil? That's something I'd enjoy, personally, living every day to fullest because you know there won't be any consequences.
@@scratch8141 tbh... he might have been hoping for it at that point.
He spent 1000s of years in the loop. Suicide just might be a temporary relief for him.
@@TheIrishRushin it wasnt thousands. At this point in the movie, he was actually very early in his loops. Hed only spent maybe a year or two in the loop when he did this. The most time passes when he starts improving himself. When he learned to be an ice sculptor, that was like 15 years, a piano player, theres another 10, singer, maybe 5, speak french, 2 or 3, all in all, assuming he became a complete master of each craft he learned, and assuming he did it in a normal amount of time. 75 years max.

@@AlexBarclayCalifornia You're a moron, I'm sorry but your a moron. That is how the 1972 Chevy C10 sounded like.
One of my favorite Bill Murray movies. It is so funny that he had to repeat the day over and over again. Chris Elliot adds more comedy to the funny movie. The truck is a 1971 Chevrolet C10 pickup.
What about Bob? Really
Hi I tell the obvious to people who already know...what you said everyone knows, but we already knew that and didn't need me to say anything...repeating the day was probably the one thing that wasn't funny in the whole movie since he lived it hundreds of thousands of times thats hell and hell isn't funny

This scene always made me a little sad, because you see just how far the time-loop broke his sanity, like a guy doing life in jail finally losing all hope or meaning and committing suicide.
I can't really think of any other movie that psychologically depicts that, that well.
So life in jail is worse than the death penalty.

It bit Bill several times while filming those scenes.
3:26 Oh god, I'd never noticed the groundhog screeching in agony during the explosion. That's some dark comedy.
As hilarious as this was, when the music changed at 2:18, that's when I was laughing the most. It goes from an entertaining car chase, to a more serious "military movie soundtrack." So funny!
I'd love to know what the friggin' groundhog said...

"I wish I could get some beaver one last time."

3:23 we have a clear shot on the reflection from the orange lamps they used to make the flame effect.
I've wasted a good classic movie moment and now you will never unsee it. Have a nice day. :)
I had a good second by second look for what you are referring too. I am a cameraman and have a professional interest in how they might have set up the shots and I would have expected that it would be an easy thing to use colored lights to simulate the look of the explosion on the shot of the man and the woman, but I have concluded that there was a single fuel explosion, although not from the gas tank of the vehicle, and it looks like it is shot from several camera angles, and edited together. I presume what you are referring to is the multiple reflections within the camera lens, including rectangular reflections.
You have concluded the rectangular reflections must be lamps, and that seems to be a reasonable hypothesis, however there are also the rounded reflections consistent with the explosion shape itself, but there appear to be multiples of the explosion.
So what is going on? It looks to me to be internal reflections on multiple lens elements. The rectangular shapes visible are highly likely to be sensor reflections, magnified and reflected between lens elements. As a general rule you would never see these kinds of reflections because lens coatings minimise them, but the light from the flame is so intense compared to the ambient light, and it looks like the shooting time of day was deliberately chosen in order to maximise the red light on the faces. Older lenses would not have coatings on all surfaces, and it would be those uncoated internal surfaces that is likely to be responsible.
It is possible that extra lights were used to maximise the effect, however, looking at the quality of the light, it is more consistent with a large light source because the light illuminates both sides of the heads in a very even manner, but the shadows on the fingers are consistent with a single large light source. Multiple rectangular lamps would be unlikely to create this same effect in this way. OTOH, a fuel explosion definitely would produce this quality of light.
From the intensity of the glow on the faces, the actors are likely to have briefly experienced quite a lot of radiant heat at the instant of the explosion.
wow the still frame imagery at 3:33 is pretty profound in this video.
I had a dream once that I went to see this movie in theaters with friends. When this scene came on the film played like normal but instead of driving off the cliff Bill Murray got out of the car, grabbed the groundhog, and threw him off the cliff. In my dream I started laughing uncontrollably and everyone in the theater was looking at me with disgust. This made me laugh even harder and the ushers had to escort me out of the theater because I was bothering everyone.
Could you imagine that if for whatever arbitrary unpredictable reason, this was the last day in the loop and he had no idea
Well he would think he'd succeeded

And thus, "don't drive angry" was born.
How many alternate realities has he created😂😂
Punxsutawney Phil’s driving gets me in stitches!
Plot twist, each one of these is an alternate universe and they continue even after his day resets. He just created a universe in which a dude drove himself and a groundhog off a cliff and now everyone he knows has to deal with the aftermath of that.
I searched this video because one of my Facebook friends posted something about a groundhog. This movie cracks me up because back in 1995, I was in rehab after having neck surgery, and I felt like I was living Groundhog Day because rehab puts you on a schedule with therapy sessions, meals, and nurses saying things to patients at exactly the same time every day. Fortunately, I only had to do it for 2 weeks, but if it were any longer, I would want to drive off a cliff with the doctor who sent me to rehab.
This scene convinced me that Bill Murray needs to cameo on Stranger Things now
What this shit have to do with Stranger Things

Love it. Ever since I first watched this movie in '93, I've wanted a late 60's, early 70's Chevy C10 long bed, 2wd.
Now the nice ones are thirty grand. I should've bought one years ago.
No vehicles were harmed in the filming of this movie. Happy Groundhog Day!

God that Larry character comes off as such a worm!! Can't believe Phil had to be nice to him to get out of that time loop.
Thats it!! 73 are the squarebody ones, 67-72 are the nicest one
The fact that the times doesn't stop and people keep living after he dies makes me think that there are many different universes where he actually died and where people deal with the conseguences of his actions. This is deep.
Wow I had that same exact thought. Yours is just put together way more better than mines
It's just a movie dawg, chill

I caught that the other night. I always wondered how and where that fell off at. The van had no stunt scenes or action shots, unless it might have fell off when driving through the potholes in the quarry road.
crazy enough, he actually was okay after this
Yeah, because he is in a fucking time loop lol.

This confirms that time goes on normally after Phil kills himself or completes a day, meaning every time he's done a day in the loop, time goes on.
01:15 XD
I wish Groundhog Day 1993 with Bill Murray
is on CMT in one day future.
The Squeal the groundhog does kills me everytime.
If released today: Groundhog Phil got the time stone and created an infinite timeloop for Phil.
This is without a doubt one of the funniest movies ever made
Fan theory? The groundhog had been stuck in the loop longer than Phil had and the curse transplanted onto him to get help. The groundhog really did learn how to drive after looping so many times.
At 2:10 there is an homage to the 1971 movie "Duel".
I thought I was the only one who noticed the similarity
I have a restored '72 C10....350, 3/4 cam, Chromed out engine...good old truck. So few of them left.
Now I wonder if the groundhog experiences the same day over and over
“No, probably not now.” Never has a scene so morbid been so funny.
A shame they didn't show a news report on it afterwards.
Chase was in and around Woodstock, IL. Quarry crash was in Loves Park, IL
I bet that stunt driver was loving this
The truck that went over the cliff didn't have a motor in it.
And it came back for the Jeep superbowl commercial...
See? They restored it!
It was necessary to have a vehicle without engine or any fuel in it to control a possible explosion on impact. Once on the ground the empty engine bay is packed with fuel and wiring to create the explosion. With a real car exploding in a crash the fire generally does come from the engine, but is not as large as this. It would take a rupturing fuel tank to produce such a large fireball, but in this scene the fireball originates in the engine bay.
Well, who would've thought? Car stunts are thoroughly planned events, not just "throw car off cliff and hope it comes out OK on film".
That poor Groundhog didn’t want to die, I am pretty sure.
What if the only reason car chases happen is because getaway drivers are stuck in a time loop doing whatever they want, and somewhere in other timelines they are still reliving that day while we are in a timeline where they went to jail or died?
An interesting observation: This is the very last time the groundhog appears in the movie.
It might be because the groundhog bit him during the shooting of that scene!
My favorite scene..."Don't drive angry".
Don't drive angry, DON'T drive angry!
"you gotta shoot, aim high I don't wanna hit the groundhog"
lol might be ok c10s gas tank is located in the cab im surprised they didnt make the explosion go off sooner
3:16 "He might be ok..." LOL
0:35 Yeah, Larry, you would think that...
Permission to comment on your post. I loved Larry's comment before he put on his seat belt. LOL
When the truck disappears and before it reappears coming up over the rise, you hear the motor rev, and then when you see it, it revs and hops a bit, this is from another movie and I can't think which one it is.
Reminds me of Duel.
the cop car starts out as a mid 80s caprice then turns into an impala and then turns into a early 80s caprice.
Sorry, but "Don't drive angry" is one of the greatest movie lines of all time.
Ha. I use the quote from Larry anytime there's an apparent death that is then overly confirmed. It happens more often than one would think.
The best example: In 1999 I bought The Phantom Menace soundtrack before the release date. They stupidly named one track, "The Death of Qui-gon."
I thought, "Well, he might be okay."
The next track was titled "Qui-gon's Funeral."
"Well, no, probably not now."
It’s very cool! By the way, that Chevrolet C-10 is actually a 1971 model :)
Bill Murray's career was substantially aided by gophers and groundhogs.
