      Tbh I would most def get rid of the ugly wallpaper, but the wood would be left untouched. The kitchen most def needs to be revamped with new cabinets and counter tops, ones that would preferably match the woodwork of the rest of the house. You'd also have to take into consideration potential led pipes and asbestos.

    • @raymondhutchinson7156
      @raymondhutchinson7156 Před 3 lety +7

      @@yozora55555 Yeh , I don't think that wall paper matches the period. Most arts and crafts wallpapers had geometric floral designs or scenes of nature. The overall period of arts and crafts was a reaction against the industrialization of the time. If the kitchen is redone, it should take into consideration the period and try to match it while still being serviceable to modern needs. I can imagine new wood cabinets with a medium stain to match the homes paneling .Mabey a subway tile backsplash that is either a green color to match the front fireplace ,any earthy color ,or white.

    • @raymondhutchinson7156
      @raymondhutchinson7156 Před 3 lety +19

      I can understand a condition where there is not much left of an original bathroom, but why do people modernize historic bathrooms. At least try and match the style and character of the home, maybe even look at architectural salvage shops for period fixtures (plumbing, electrical, tile).

    • @raymondhutchinson7156
      @raymondhutchinson7156 Před 3 lety +5

      In a renovation, they still produce some of that floor tile designs. Some classic style tiles are even cheaper than those in fashion . There are also plenty of restoration oriented companies that will reproduce historic features for homes .

    This is my second time to make a comment on the Restoration Nation site. I’m originally from Helena. I grew up about 3 blocks from this grand old home. This home was owned by Mr Spivey for as long as I can remember. I love love love this Prairie style. The interior reminds me of the Arts & Crafts style as well. When I was young Helena had some absolutely beautiful old homes, some still standing but sadly many are gone. Every time Laine features a Helena home I get a wave of heavy nostalgia. In closing I want to compliment Laine. You are doing such a wonderful service in showing each of these historical masterpieces & giving all of us a mini-class on architectural time periods. What a wonderfully preserved example of Prairie Style design. There should be a preservation easement on both the interior and exterior of this house so no future owner can destroy the historic features. The original bathrooms are just so rare nowadays, I hope someone in preservation is photographing and documenting the unglazed porcelain floor tile mosaic designs, the fixtures, and the bathroom “jewelry”, those original towel bars, cup holders and sconces. Maybe she can write a book on historic architecture or start a website in collaboration with a college architecture student or a historical society or the like photographing and documenting all these wonderful homes!

It's a fraction of the size of the Arkansas house, but it's my piece of heaven. There are 80,000 bungalows in Chicago, the only problem is, you'd have to have at least $350,000 to buy one.

    Oh my gosh! I grew up in a Prairie Style home In KC! It was mayor Brice Smith’s home. It was gorgeous, but it was 1921. It was on the Hyde Park home tour. ❤

    I think I’m in love. I’ve kinda heard about these Prairie houses but didn’t realize they were also Craftsman style also.
    This home has my kind of taste. I can’t believe no one ever painted the wood. ( which today everyone paints it) It’s absolutely gorgeous of a house. Of course I’d have to get rid of some off the wallpaper n change that one bathroom more into its period of time. I can’t believe the asking price. I thought for sure it would of been close to a million. I’m so thankful that this house is still standing n barely been retouched. Makes me want to move to Arkansas. ♥️♥️♥️😊👍👍👍

    I own books about bungalow period house architecture, details, and style, and this is what’s affectionately called a bunga-mansion! 😍 It could be in my books! That woodwork! 😘 Those amazing original lights! 💗. I believe the number buttons on the windows are there so people can identify what storm windows go to what fixed windows. I assume the storm window hangers are also still on the exterior window frames. I also believe it has the higher ceilings because it’s in Arkansas, with the broiling hot summers, and they’d help the house stay cooler in the heat, along with the fans in the attic. What a great beauty!! 😍😍

    That home is stunning and it’s miraculous that so much of the original build is intact! Two things that made me want to cry: 1. That nightmare ‘90s makeover of the master bathroom. 2. The ductwork in the attic room.
    Arkansas wouldn’t be high on my list for where to live, but if I had the money for this home I would.
    I shudder to think of the “DIYer” that could move in there and immediately start painting the woodwork white “it’s just too dark, y’all!” 🤦🏻
