    All,...I think that Kirby made an introductory video as to his intent in doing the AE product line review. I believe that Kirby stated that the intent of the series of AE product reviews was to introduce and inform his viewers to the various shoes available from Allen Edmonds. In addition, Kirby mentioned that he did not receive any compensation for agreeing to review the various AE shoes. While I agree with the comments regarding quality control issues AE is currently experiencing, Kirby aptly points out that these shoes are not worn in his current rotation, perhaps due to the quality issues? My comments are intended to share my opinion that this video fairly represents what Kirby said he intended to accomplish in his introductory video regarding the AE product line reviews. In hindsight, perhaps a better Byline for Kirby’s AE product line review could be amended to “An Overview of AE product line”. I sense that Kirby has been provided full access to AE’s product line with the intent that the Channel discuss each/most of the various AE shoes. I may be wrong, but it doesn’t appear that the intent of AE was for Kirby to comment on any and all negative issues related to the AE shoes discussed in the various videos. Kirby can you provide commentary relative to my assumptions stated above? Thanks.

      @kirbyallison  Před 5 lety +16

      Thanks, Ed! You are totally correct. For one, we are absolutely (and unfortunately) not paid for these reviews. I'd gladly take the money, though, because it wouldn't change what I have to say. Without even a close second, AE is the most-worn leather dress shoe of all of my Hanger Project customers. Furthermore, for most Americans, AE is or was their first "quality" goodyear welted leather shoe. For those that don't want to fuss with online sizing, or have difficult to fit feet, or just want "a pretty good leather dress shoe" that is reasonably priced, the fact remains that there are few, if not any, better options in America.
      They are a great dress shoe for the money! Can one do better with a little extra effort or more money? For sure. And our intention is to review these other brands also. Carmina. Edward Green. Gaziano and Girling. John Lobb. Cobbler Union... we're just getting started!!
      The fundamental purpose of our shoe review series is to present you our favorite shoes within a price range and to describe their features and qualities to someone who would otherwise not be intimately familiar with the product. Of course, someone who already owns a pair of AE Park Avenues probably isn't going to learn much about them from this video (although he might!) But for someone who might be considering the AE Park Ave as their first shoe... I still recommend them!

      Agree@@kirbyallison . I wear Allen Edmonds because I have 11.5AA feet. Many shoe brands do not make narrow width footwear for men. Even if they do, narrow only goes to B. For someone who's Park Avenue 11.5A is still too wide, I'm glad they offer AA and AAA width.

    What you folks forget is that we get this for free. If you watch all of Kirby’s videos it’s easy to balance videos like this with his personal shoe videos. Also, as he has said before, he does not review shoes he would not be happy wearing himself. I’m happy for videos like this as it keeps his excellent content free to watch, it’s a trade off I’m happy to accept and let’s not forget, these actually are really great shoes for the price.

    Hey Kirby, thanks for your great content! Do you know if there’s any variance on the leather they use for the uppers? The leather on my black Park Avenues just doesn’t seem all that “open” - doesn’t receive polish that well (lots of streaks), almost as if there’s some kind of plastic coating on top...

    Mr. Allison,
    Quick question. I am thinking about pulling the trigger on my first pair of AE but I am worried that if I get caught in the rain without my galoshes that I will have ruined the shoe. I have a pair of light to medium brown Johnston and Murphy shoes that have stains I can not get out or cover up well with polish because I got caught in the rain with them. I am looking at a black cap toe hopkinson from AE. Since it is black would have much less problem if I accidently get caught in the rain? I take the public transit and don't want to accidentally ruin a pair of nice shoes. Would they be fine if I had a leather sole since they are black or should I think about a rubber sole? Thanks so much!

    Hey, Kirby - wondering if you are familiar with the brand, Antica Cuoieria? Years ago I bought a pair of their cap-toe oxford in tan, wearing them on occasion. Recently I found a pair of the same shoe in black (via EBay @$17). Wasn’t expecting a whole lot but when I got them I was surprised at the great condition of the uppers; the soles? Well, that’s another story - the right shoe’s was separated at the heel then, while trying them on, the sole separated for about 1/2 of the shoe. Can these shoes be re-soled and, would it be worth it? I can’t really find any information about the brand. Can you offer any advice? Thanks (and greetings from Baytown, TX!).

    AE Park Aves are on a particularly narrow last. Most will need to select a wider size than normal. This sort of information would be helpful for those of us relying on you for information on shoes we haven't encountered. This really felt like more of a commercial than an informational video; less educative than your other works. You've got us used to a higher standard, Kirby!

  • @philschiavone101
    @philschiavone101 Před 5 lety

    Hi Kirby, I enjoy my 42 pair of AE but with the size of AE, can we really expect the best calfskin? I would think that they would not be able to source the most choice calf as there is not that much available. Is today’s AE calfskin really a good kipskin? With that said, AE calf beats chrome tanned calf that seems to be prevalent with some European shoe makers.

  • @kmcmichael
    @kmcmichael Před 5 lety +2

    I defense of AE shoes, they come in sizes that people cannot get anywhere else for the money. They are real leather that will stretch over time and accommodate those of us that need it. Just because Mr. Allison is not a riveting speaker and uses verbiage repeated on other videos does not make his message false. Does anyone remember Milton Friedman?

    A few comments and questions for you to respond. 1. Is it worth getting the Cordovan premium shell or stick with the standard? 2. How about the Bond street that has the integrated rubber sole for traction? Although the brand seems to be getting some bad reviews on the website... Your thoughts? I've been wearing Crockett and Jones now for years but do not like paying that premium if unnecesary.

    I watched reviews, read up on the Allen Edmonds manufacturing methods and history, it all sounded great. So I bought a pair of Chukka Boots, great product, great purchasing experience overall, I decided to buy more shoes. Bought a pair of Dalton Wingtip Dress Boots. I received 2 different color boots, also one of the boots seemed to be a different vintage or much older and had been on display for some time. Multiple price tickers attached and removed, physical dimensions were different, a different cut of the same style. I called customer service, they apologized and said they would send out another pair, free shipping. Got the next pair, shoes are with out a doubt reject, factory second shoes. I wear a size 9.5, the shoes I received are a size 8 or possible even smaller, but marked as a 9.5 D The shoes were also misshapen. The left looked like a right, the toe was curved outward. The worst quality I've seen from any shoe company, shameful quality.

I have a collection of English, Italian, Dutch and Spanish shoes with exceptional quality and detailing, this simply wasn’t the case with AE. The dye was hitting the soles (over spill) I’m variois areas and felt they just missed out of proper quality control. I wish we had gotten paid... I would have certainly taken the money. Because AE does have a good product for the money. Is it the best shoe the world? No. Is it the best shoe for the money? No, also. But Allen Edmonds has many virtues.

    full grain leather=good
    top grain leather=decent
    genuine leather=low quality

      Yeah, KA did not due AE justice in this regard because AE shoes are full grain leather. There are a few exceptions such as Bond Street, which is corrected grain leather.

    I do like Allen Edmonds becuase of the width fittings and their very cheap "sale" prices but becuase of a few things I could never take there seriously. I saw The Park Avenue advertised in a magazines. This advertisement claimed that they where made by the best shoe makers in the world. A hell ot a claim. I called Allen Edmonds a few times to two different departments. Both could not give me a valid explanation to this claim. One pereon even replied to my question, "American President's have worn them". Pardon? When I think of the best shoe makers I think of a someone sat down sewing in the welt by hand and not someone simply standing and holding up a shoe to a machine as it sews in the welt.
    I also do not like The Goodywar Welt. They are a very bulky shoe with a poor flex.

    They use to be Allen edmonds for your information you can talk all day but the quality it's not the same anymore try and do some research before you promote this brand and by the way these shoes are boring as well I would pick Santoni Mezlan Magnanni before Allen edmonds

      Why? As far as I can tell, they don’t even come in different widths.

    Can we get some shoes to look at without talking. I'm not going to buy my man these shoe if I have to listen a pair per 20 minutes.
