- We bought a Kubota L3901 4WD HST tractor with LA525 front loader. It will be critical for taking care of our 40 acres of woods in Vermont, during the house build and beyond. We also purchased pallet forks, added a third function valve and welded hooks on a bucket, and we had beet juice added in the rear tires for extra stability.

Most mechanics recommend checking the oil at the start of each work day when you use power equipment. It forces you to perform a quick visual test on the engine bay and will prevent catastrophic failure should fuel leak INTO the oil sump. When fuel leaks into the crankcase it will RAISE the oil level. Thinning the oil with fuel, a solvent will render the oil useless as a lubricant. A "proper" oil level is neither high nor low. Checking the oil every 50 hours is not frequent enough, especially as age and hours accumulate. Develop good habits now not after the cows are out of the barn.

Haha! As much as possible we're trying to ensure that both of us know how to operate all the tools and equipment, and generally be able to do as many tasks as possible. We've already found this really useful - not only can we get things done faster, but it means we can switch tasks when we need a break.

It's 2023 and I've owned my L3800 since 2013 and I have to thank you for this video as I leaned a few things I was never told or never found out about it. The seat adjustment for the springs was a big one, I never knew. I did just go out and adjust mine to where it's super comfortable now. Most of the rest I figured out on my own through use, but anything I might not have known helps. That's a nice way to receive a new machine, very thorough. My salesman met us in the parking lot, and said good luck. I and my wife loaded it on the trail and carted it home. Delivery? There was no mention of any type of delivery, so we borrowed an equipment trailer, bindered it down and off we went.

The knob between your legs Crank it wide open... You can adjust the speed by using your 3-point lever.. why people feel the need just to slam the lever forward as fast as they can as beyond me.. and use your four-wheel drive as much as possible unless you're on blacktop road.. it will help with skidding trees and loader work.. only use the differential lock if you're losing traction in 4-wheel drive.... And when engaging the PTO let the clutch out slow with tractor idling

As for lifting the boom to check the engine, there are safety jacks you can get that’ll prop up the bucket boom so you can work on the motor. If you take your tractor in for maintenance it’s highly likely service personnel will have those safety jacks.

Very interesting video, very useful to me. Thank you to the competent salesman who took the time to teach all that. The lady was very comic too. At the beginning, she would listen quietly, just now an then answering ehemm ... ok ... ehemm ... ok ... and I really wondered if she understood anything at all, or maybe just 25%, or 50%, or 80% of what the guy was explaining, but in the end, I think she understood most of the stuff, but maybe won't remember everything, so viewing again this video will be a great help to her. As regards me, I really appreciated since I recently bought a very similar tractor, Kioti CK4010, so most of the man's explanations are well adapted for my new tractor too. And actually what this salesman does here, is what MY salesman DID NOT do when I got my brand new tractor, although he was a very competent and nice person, he was simply too busy on that particular day.
Very exciting! I'm a city boy, so I really enjoyed watching and learning about operating a tractor.
If it was me, I would get a canopy for shade and to prevent heavy branches from falling on my head.

Thanks Neil - glad you enjoyed it! So much of this is brand new to us but we're having a lot of fun learning.
We went back and forth on a cab and decided in the end to go without. It adds a substantial amount to the price of the tractor, and while the extra comfort would be nice (protection from the elements while snow plowing in winter, and AC in summer), we decided we just couldn't justify it.
There are also lighter-weight canopies that mount to the ROPS (the gray roll bar at the back) that would provide shade although I doubt they'd offer much protection from falling branches. We'll see how we get on without one, but we can always add one on later if we want.
@@AdventurousWay Your lot is mostly wooded so sun protection would not be of much benefit. A canopy will interfere with your overhead visibility. Have you ever banged your head on a low hanging obstruction because you were wearing a baseball hat? In my opinion, better visibility will provide better safety. If you need sun protection, wear a hat or install an umbrella.

You're going to enjoy a tool like that. Please be careful dragging logs. When I was a kid, mom's cousin, dragging tree stumps roots first, roots caught up, log stood up and fell on him. Take Care

Run the tractor at least 21 2200 RPM it will go into regen less often... And you will get the max out of your loader... Anything more you are not gaining with the loader... PTO work bring it up to the yellow mark on your tack

Where ear plugs to have hearing later in life. Really rather important and no one seems to say it. The noise will give you a head pain after an hour and your really not going to hear much else over the engine noise.

How are you liking your L3901? I have one and have had it since 2018. I have 185 hours on mine.
Only complaints are I don't think the loader lift capacity is that great.
The oil dipstick is difficult to get to.
The PTO switch is not great.
If you use a grapple like I do, I wish the front brush guard had a metal cage on it, I've had sticks run through the front grill messing up a battery.
I added an extra valve for a grapple on the front. It has been handy for brush piles.
Our L3901 is now about 10 months old and has around 160 hours on it - over half of which we've put on in the last 2 months since we've been back in Vermont! So far, it's far exceeded our expectations. Before we bought the tractor, we wrote up a list of all the things we thought we'd use it for, but in reality it's come in useful for many more things. I think overall my comments would be very similar to yours.
The loader lift capacity is definitely an issue. We debated for a while between this tractor and the L4701 which would have given us more lift capacity. We've definitely struggled for lift capacity and have maxed out the loader more than a few times, but we've always found a way to work around it. Based on some loads we've lifted where we know the exact weight (e.g. shipping crates), we've managed to lift 1,100-1,200lbs, which is right what the loader is specced to do.
The oil dipstick drives me constantly crazy. It's almost impossible to remove with gloves on, and especially when it's really cold outside. That seems like it would be an easy one for Kubota to improve, and must be a common complaint. It's more of a nuisance than anything else though.
With regards to the PTO switch being "not great", I'm assuming you're referring to it slipping out occasionally? This has happened to us a few times and I had just assumed it was our tractor, so it's interesting to hear you're seeing a similar thing.
We did have the extra front valve anticipating a grapple, but ended up cancelling our grapple order because it was taking too long. It would be nice to have, but we're managing to get by with the forks which, given the price of the grapples, seems like a decent trade-off! However, the third function hydraulic valve on the front could be useful if we get a snow plow (which we're considering for next winter).
It's funny you mention about the brush guard - our dealer even warned us about that before buying the tractor so it's something we've always tried to be mindful of. I keep meaning to search for an aftermarket grill we could add for some extra protection!
So overall, we really like the tractor. It's not without its faults, but we'd be lost without it.
@@AdventurousWay Thanks for the response, I ended up buying a John Deere 320E skid steer to supplement the tractor. It is fantastic even though it is a wheeled machine. The tracked models cost too much. I rent excavators from time to time, they are very handy. The skid steer can life 3 times as much so now I am good. We live on 20 acres.
The John Deere 320E is definitely a big step up in lifter capability! Out of curiosity, what are the types of things you find yourself needing the 320E to lift that the tractor can't? For us at the moment it's generally heavy logs, and hopefully that'll be less of an issue when the big site clearing work is done.
@@AdventurousWay Firstly, if I had to do it over again I probably would have only purchased a skid steer. For my land it makes sense, I don't have large fields to mow, mostly woods. We have large rocks to move around and I have put down over 1500 tons of gravel with both the skid steer and the tractor. The skid steer wins every time. I have used the skid steer to move building materials as well. Our hickory flooring came in 5 2000 lb pallets. The tractor would not handle that.
I also use the skid steer to dig and level, it's much faster.
My grapple is the best money I have spent. Much much more utility than pallet forks. I’ve used both. I recommend anyone who cuts down trees or brush to get a grapple. I have the Wicked 55 grapple from Everything Attachments. Waited 5 months to get it but we’ll worth the wait. Made of hardox so about half weight of cheaper made in China grapples…lighter grapple saves lift capability which I agree could be better. Sometimes wish I’d got the L4701 instead of L3901 except when negotiating tight spaces in the woods. Also put a brush guard on mine…too risky for me to operate a grapple without a good brush guard.
Lots to learn with that machine. I'm sure it all becomes second nature after some hours of use.
Having said that, I'm still lost from the up and down bouncy bouncy video.

Just bought a brand new LX 4020 to move snow in mountain resort. Dealership put howes diesel treatment in it and sold me a bottle to treat diesel because the temp is around 0 degrees F at 10000 feet elevation. I have 17.2 hours on the tractor and the thing won’t start. I tried for 3 days finally put 911 in fuel filter and added a little to the tank as per specs. still won’t start. had to tow it through 4 feet of snow 150 yards as the kubota dealership in my area wanted to charge me 8 hours of labor just to drive out to and from my location because i didn’t buy it from them. took it to a kubota dealership in a different state but only 1.5 hours from me. They told me the DPF is completely clogged due to the fuel. SOOO no warranty and no insurance coverage. $12000.00 to fix. the tractor was only $39000.00 WTF! Kubota service and insurance and Sales all suck. They blame it on the other dealerships, no one is taking responsibility for taking care of tractor. Read your manual and warranty and insurance form. If it is fuel related. NO COVERAGE. DONT BUY Kubota! LIARS and Fraudsters. Does anyone have any insight or help here ? Just lost over $20000 on contracts for snow removal. and looks like i wont be getting this tractor back for at least 3 to 4 weeks, even if i pay the extortion money to fix it. and then im sure it will just gel up again and and wont start and will have to go through this all again in another 17 hours. only about 15 total gallons of fuel have gone through this engine 8 of which was put in by the dealer and i only put 12 oz. of howes in the 10 gallons of ulsd i bought from costco. teir one diesel.

4WD is just one front wheel and one rear wheel? WTF…
I don’t know what that salesman was taught but when my Kubota is in 4WD all 4 wheels are pulling. If I’m pulling something out of the ground using the draw bar there is a good chance that all 4 wheels will slip.
I think he was referring to the locking diff.

This is the worst Dealership video I’ve ever seen , first thing never ever try starting your tractor if you’re not sitting in operators seat period!!! Your showing her how the quick attach works and maintenance points and she literally has only operated a tractor a couple weeks ago and you showed her to start tractor standing from the side of tractor never never never do this!!! My father got ran over starting a tractor while not in operators seat
It's much safer to be on the tractor when starting it.
