  • Americans are leaving their jobs in droves. In August 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs. While some people have left the workforce entirely, job security and better pay are top concerns for others. Dubbed "The Great Resignation", the exodus of workers has created hiring challenges for companies and left millions of jobs unfilled. More than half of U.S. workers surveyed said they plan to look for a new job in the coming year, according to Bankrate's August jobseeker survey. Some 56% of respondents said adjustable working hours and remote work were a priority. Working women have faced an additional burden, juggling childcare duties, virtual schooling and their careers. So, what does the realignment of the workforce mean for employees and businesses? And what steps should you take before quitting your job?

    Over the past 10 years, I've worked in IT, taught Computer Science, and worked in robotics/automation. Every single one of these jobs tried to make me work outside the hours that were predefined and then made me out to NOT be a "team player" because I challenged them. Part of the problem is coworkers not having the backbone to stand up for themselves. Quit being passive!

    • @j-watty3818
      @j-watty3818 Před 2 lety +11

      @LogicalSchizoid_INTP It's far from a random event. It's a domino effect of the businesses obtaining more power; work outside the predefined hours, be in constant touch through the use of the cell phone you pay for, take this medication, take this pay cut, no raises this year, etc. The rights and treatments of workers have dwindled over the past 50 years to the point everyone is quitting. The employers have gained more power while the employees have lost their power, both sides are at fault. Our powers as employees have gotten worse because the majority just roll over and do whatever their employer tells them to without challenging. Quit being passive!

I hated my manager, she had horrible leadership skills and just refused to let me flourish and grow. In turn I was able to go to school full time which only took 5 months to complete and am now a licensed esthetician in NY. I recently got a job and it was a MUST that it be remote because now I have a space where I’ll be conducting my services and my goal is to work from there. To employers: If the employee is qualified or has done the exact same work, please at least offer them the courtesy of an interview. If not, don't be surprised when down the line you're "ghosted." And quit paying poor wages and not granting any benefits or pay raises. In short, be decent. Oh, and one other thing. Quit offering me less benefits than others. I worked at a job where as a member of the lowest of the low I got one week of paid leave for not only vacation (after one year) but also sick leave. ONE week. Everyone else employed there got a month. I thought this was unfair and unequal treatment. Those people were not being paid at piece rate like I was, either but at an hourly rate or salaried and were being paid consistently. If I ran out of work which was often I did not get paid. The year I did not even make $10.00 an hour at their piece rate money was when I quit. I think they went out of business within the next 2 years. The last straw was when a new higher got a $5000 signing bonus but those of who had been there for years didn't.
    Basically what happened was this, the new person got the bonus of being the ONLY employee, all 11 of us quit without notice on the spot. Now the owner can hand out another $75k to staff the place, it takes 16 people to run that place smoothly.
    The next day they tried to compromise by giving us $1000 to come back, let's just say I don't think they will be reopening any time soon, that was 2 weeks ago.
    On the other hand almost all of us got jobs not far away and quickly. I will receive a $6k bonus in February, that's the same bonus my new employer gave to all who stayed throughout the lockdown.

We are only just beginning to see this happen. So, sure, everyone can raise wages and then the price of goods sold. We will all be making more money but will be paying more to live so the wage increase is for not. Worst yet if the increase puts you in a higher tax bracket then you will essentially be making less. This is why companies have not increased prior is because they did not want to increase the cost of their product. Now if forced to do so they will but it doesn’t change the quality of life for anyone. Those on a fixed income will be the ones really hurt.

      A similar thing played out after the Black Death in England, with the surviving peasant population striking and fighting for better working hours & pay; after everything they had been through and survived, they didn't want to go back to the life they had before of toiling away in the fields (etc).
      Initially the upper classes had a lot of problems because the Black had created enough of a labour shortage, without having what was left of the population trying to strike on top of it all. But then it sparked upon them that sheep were perhaps a better investment than growing loads of crops; demand for wool across Europe was booming and whereas crops required a great deal of labour to plough, sow, grow, harvest & prepare them, a whole herd of sheep could be looked over by a single individual (and the profit margins on wool were so much better).
      So landowners started investing in sheep instead and ignored the plight of endless peasants who now found themselves jobless. And if being made jobless wasn't bad enough, thousands of peasants started finding themselves homeless as the wool trade proved so profitable for the landowners, that they started clearing out entire villages and turning them into fields of sheep.
      This was a "second death" for many peasant populations (and one that is less known and often overlooked); although the Black Death killed vast numbers of people, post-plague a lot of people also died from the land reforms and shift from an agricultural society focused on growing crops to one focused on profiting from sheep & wool. Many people also starved too because with less food crops being grown food prices went up; this was not an issue for the rich who could afford the food (and many landowners thanks to the wool trade became even richer post-plague) but it was a massive issue for the poorer classes. It was a brutal world; the reality for many peasants survived the Black Death in England was that afterwards they found themselves jobless, homeless and starving to death. Although the peasant strikes did eventually bring some reforms, the price many people paid was enormous.
      Work culture reforms might be needed but if too much disruption occurs, employers will just look towards other technologies (and other countries) to plug or overcome the inconvenient labour shortages. People must tread carefully and promote the right people to fight if there are not be negative repeats of history.

      Also, people learned that they can work from home. I think this is why Biden wants the IRS in our bank accounts now. If ANYONE makes $10 or more in interest, the bank must report. They show everything coming in and out.

    Maybe they can't meet their need, imagine working for 40yrs to have $1m in your retirement, while some people are putting just $10k in a meme coin for just few months and become multi millionaires. if you don't invest, you're missing out on opportunities to increase your financial status

      Raise employee wages, the balance has to come out of somewhere, better believe it will end up coming out of the customers' pocket and the employees' wages (taxes & such). Not to mention the chances end up significantly higher they'll have to let people go due to not being able to meet the higher pay demand fully.
      There's a reason many employers are against raising wages, it's not just "Employer greedy. No wanna give me more money. Ugg."
      Stop being ignorant
