No disrespect to the members or the company, but perhaps the moral of the story is if you can't join a reasonably bigger company, it's a huge risk to join a particularly small company unless they have a good track record. There might some problems at larger companies too, but sadly the really smaller companies simply have insufficient resources and finances to compete with the larger companies and produce successful groups, along with providing for their members.
I really liked Blady along with a lot of other groups from small companies, but sadly most of them were/are fighting an uphill battle to make it in such a competitive industry.

It's all about connections, in kpop if you dont have a company, you have almost no chance of becoming mainstream (ie: appearing on variety shows, performing on music shows etc). That's why unfortunately most people just resort to joining a company even if that means they get little to no pay or creative freedom :( I actually got scouted by a kpop agency myself, but knowing how shady the kpop industry is, i quickly turned it down XD
I'm actually planning to make a video about this in the next few days btw, so do stay tuned if you're interested.

From what I've heard, it's rare and somewhat taboo for management to prey upon their idols, and actually, many of the legit entertainment companies forbid fraternizing between management/staff and the idols, as they tend to be pretty professional about the business. Ultimately, however, it's not unheard of for slimeball managers and agents to sexually harass or even pressure up-and-coming actresses into doing things quid-pro-quo, and ultimately, it depends on who you are. A perfect example is Jang Ja-yeon (임자연), the actress from "Boys over Flowers" who committed suicide in 2009. She left a 7-paged note documenting being raped by high-profile figures in the entertainment industry, chaebols and the media, who paid her manager for her sexual services, most of the times unbeknownst to her. Her seven-paged letter listed 31 men she was forced to have sex with by her manager -- all of whom were either high-level Chaebol corporate executives, major Korean newspaper heads, and media directors. As a result of her suicide, the Korean government ordered an investigation into her suicide. There is some speculation about why she was treated like this by her management company when many were not. It may have something to do with the fact that she was parentless -- and therefore deemed powerless since Korean society heavily considers your family background and your connections to determine how powerful or influential you are. Of course, if you have no parents, you are considered the bottom of the barrel and someone who is perhaps extremely vulnerable and easy prey for exploitation, blackmail, abuse, etc. On the other hand, someone who came from a middle-class background, or a highly influential and connected background, would be treated with much more respect by Koreans.

Ragamuffin momo is my girl, I love her. But that’s not what happened, according to sixteen and some interviews. Momo was told if she stayed at her current weight, she couldn’t be in a showcase. Not that she couldn’t debut, but she couldn’t be in a showcase. Jihyo was told the same thing and she ended up not being in that particular show case.
What momo went through is terrifying and she no doubt felt pressure to lose weight quickly. I’m sure it was suggested that she lose weight in unhealthy ways. But she wasn’t told to starve herself for a week. That’s very different. “hey you can’t eat for 7 days” or “hey at this weight you can’t be in this trainee showcase” are pretty different things.

It's the exact same thing with models, they give them a very tiny dress and say "you will wear that in one week, if you can't we will find someone else and bye bye". They know the only way the model would fit in that dress is by starving. And when she does, no one ask her how she lost weight because they know. Kpop idols are the same, they want to have a successful carrier and they know they have to get the job in order to do that. So they starve. And companies look the other way while they should take care of their trainees...

    My questions:
(*** First, sorry if I'm being curious about things that maybe hard to tackle. Feel free to abstain from answering if you feel too uncomfortable with any 🙏)
    - How competitive would you say was the ambient (between trainees/members) either before and after debut? Was your company more geared towards competition or cooperation, between members?
    - If you are ever considering coming back to the industry, would you go to another company, provided they give you better work conditions?
Do you think it is possible to promote without being affiliated with an entertainment company? Or even creating one's own company and doing one's own management (when you don't have a ton of money to back it up)?
    - Now that you have matured compared to when you were a trainee, do you think you have more clear goals in mind (that you can share with us), like focusing on singing, composing, acting...?

A lot of this does feel like it came from the company's side of things. I think the success of idol groups that have been allowed more creative and personal freedoms, like BTS and (G)-IDLE, combined with general progression in societal attitudes (however gradual), is encouraging more companies to be more liberal and for contracts to be more lenient. It is still a slow process, and there will be many years before we can really say that the industry is all around positive.

Thank you for talking about this, because I think this is an issue that happens in a lot of countries. There's not enough exposure on what the behind the scenes of the entertainment industry is really like, especially for people starting out. There's no one to ask or reference to find out if what's happening is okay, and it often seems like society says artists must just bear with it if they chose to be artists. In my country, it's common practice for actors to be paid 3 months after their job, but that's actually illegal and most people don't know that. There's no union here, so you have to rely on your agency to do the best. You could be with the best agency but then their commission is way higher than everyone else's. We need to start talking about treating people who work so hard to entertain the public fairly, especially when the average work day is 16 hours compared to an office job which is usually 8 hours a day.

A lot of the more expensive designer clothing is on loan to stylists with a relationship to stores and designers that have higher ticket items at their fingertips. That stuff is returned at the end of a show or photoshoot (take a close look at MV or photoshoot behind the scenes. Many times you will see that the tags and visible labels on clothing are still attached since it needs to be returned for sale). Some items are purchased by the company and they keep a 'closet'. In this case, you will see the idols under contract with them wearing the same items from time to time (ie Yoona and Irene). In the more rare cases, you will have individual idols that have a relationship with a designer and will receive clothing for free which they can either wear during a music or awards show, a television appearance, to the airport or in their personal lives (ie Gucci & Exo's Kai).

Other people seem to find the art as a way to make money which strips the art of its beauty in my opinion. Along time ago I used to be in a band also but it was purely for the sake of making music. I did hear that BLADY ended up getting new members so the girls in the video I mentioned could've been the new members and Christine might've been acting shady towards her old ones (there's a video you can see of the "old" members with Christine and plenty of comments talked about how awkward it was and how they didn't seem to be close). But once again, I'm not really familiar with Christine or her old group so I can't really speak on whether she likes her members, only *she* can if she chooses to.

I am interested in the contract about being as a trainee and an idol contract.
Like I am not Korean and we won't have a place to lived and they might or might not give u place to stay right?
How long is the trainee contract? Etc.. do u get to see the artist in the company while as a trainee?
When you became a trainee successfully, and is your 1st day to trained , than you were trained alone or by a instructor or with a group of people? And when we'll they teach you Korean language and i know there is monthly or weekly evaluation, is won't be so fast for a just came in trainee did right?
And for trainees when will you know they will asked you to go on diet? And do trainees really can't use phones? I saw some trainees we're allowed to use their phones, because they upload pics or videos on to their Instagram account so I was wondering I thought they said they are not allowed to have phones so they can't use their phone to call people or whoever..
Do you need to report to the house manager (who to care of the trainees) that we are back home after training. What time is the training? 10am-10pm? How do you know when is your break time, or lunch time. Do you get to see the CEO or anything?
And the contract, what does it said? I know that trainees or not allowed to date, they will get kicked out right, and do you see any one dating, or they forced to get out...? What happens if the CEO won't let you break the contract do we have to pay money or Sth?
If we are successful became a trainee and than will the visa they do will they helped us?? Sorry just Abit curious

    1) Have you ever thought if you were in one of those big company like the top3 or pledis etc.. would that make a difference ? To your life and maybe your debut life as an idol wouldn’t be that hard compare when you’re in a small company.
    2) Would you say that the insider of an Idol’s life is based on the company that you’ve signed with ? For example if you were to sign in a good or big company , then when debut you are treated better than those smaller companies.
Hope it’s not too personal ! I’ve watched all your videos and really curious about your opinion. Thank you ! ^^

For example I have recently noticed Mamamoo has done a couple of advertisements and they seem to have done so for at least a couple of years. I am thinking that they might get a larger cut/% of that contract than from their singing since it is not as involved. (I can imagine if the idol composes their music that might make more). But overall where is most of the $ that can put in their pocket come from? Do you think a medium sized? company like RBW have staff who pursues commercial, TV, radio, movie jobs for the idols or do they sub-contract it to an agency that has more experience in those areas?
