  • Flying a single engine plane to Scotland and beyond on an Arctic flying adventure. See inside the cockpit, hear ATC calls, watch how I fly across the UK to our first stop on this huge flying trip.
    We depart East Midlands Airport and fly IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) across to the top of Scotland to Wick Airport (EGPC). The aircraft is a Cirrus SR22T registration N123VP.
    Thanks to Philippe Polman at Echelon Air who helped make this trip possible. If you want to learn to fly in the UK, hire an aircraft, or do a trip like this, check out their website: www.echelonair.com/

    Don’t forget lookout! Flying in Scotland with lenticular clouds around means possible gliders, not all of which will be using Mode S. In the UK, gliders can fly into cloud and only need to make a call on a cloud flying frequency.

    This is going to be a great series!!
    A deconfliction service and Philippe said is very restrictive. You have to request if you want to change headings/levels and the controller will make best effort to achieve 5nm laterally and 3000ft vertically against unknown traffic. They can reduce vertical separation if they co-ordinate with other controllers tracks or their own.
    As Philippe said it makes for a high workload for the controller especially with windfarms (the rotation is detected by the primary radar (no height info)), large flocks of birds and even weather. It can lead to you being vectored all around the sky to avoid "traffic" that may not even be there. but if you call "traffic in sight" then the controller can remove the separation against that track/contact.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  Před rokem +1

      Good intel, thanks Jonathan. Yeah we chatted about it a bit more off camera as well. Interesting the 4 levels of service in the UK, doesn't take too long to get used to them though. I appreciate the comment, thanks.

    • @StefanDrury
      @StefanDrury  Před rokem

      It depends on the aircraft country of registration. As I have an FAA license I can fly an N-Reg aircraft anywhere in the world. My CASA license gives me the same for VH-reg aircraft. So if we were in a G-reg (UK) aircraft Philippe would have to have been pilot in command.
