Woodturning - This Piece of Oak has an Incredible Story!

- A massive thank you to Henry at Blockworks_uk ( / blockworks_uk ) for supplying this piece of wood and many other pieces that will feature on the channel in future videos. He has some incredible stock so definitely go and give him a follow on Instagram and see if there's anything you'd be interested in buying. Make sure to let him know you saw his info on this video 😉
Now for the wood!
I love it when a piece of wood comes with history and a great story, and this piece of oak isn't short of either. The tree was felled in the early 1800's, milled, and was used as part of a cargo ship that sailed around the Atlantic ocean for 100 years! After which the ship was broken apart and Henrys great grandfather purchased the block. It stayed in possession of the family and was passed down to Henrys grandfather. When he moved to Suffolk he took the block with him, there he placed the oak in replacement of a broken mahogany block that was used to stop the local church bell from swinging too far. 40 years later the Oak was replaced.
I hope you enjoyed the story, and the piece I created. Who knows, in 50 years time someone might be turning it into a smaller bowl?!

My videos are for entertainment purposes only. I am still relatively new to woodturning and some of my techniques might not be the "best" or safest. When using any tools or machinery always read and understand safety/manufacturers guidelines.
Yes, I'm aware that wearing gloves while woodturning is considered an unsafe practise. The gloves I wear are tight fitting and don’t have any loose threads. I wear them for the protection of my skin. This is a risk that I am willing to take, however I am still very conscious of the potential danger and I do not touch any spinning parts of the lathe. That is a beautiful winged bowl with an amazing history. It will definitely become a family heirloom. Wifey says that story would make a good children's book.
Hi James thanks for your comments , it was lovely material to work with. My Mum thought the same about a story, need to think of a catchy title.....? 🪵😃👍
@@HarrySmithShorts - Hi,
This is his wife Lori. I would love to buy a copy of the book when your Mum has it finished. Maybe illustrations along with photos of the wood could be part of the story? As for a catchy title here is a suggestion, The Wood That Sailed Through Time. Have fun with the book.
@@1954JDR thanks Lori, that is a brilliant title! 😃
The grain illustrates the difference between old growth wood and the faster growing trees today! You can’t get wood like that much nowadays! Fantastically beautiful and you make it look sooo easy! Fabulous job, Harry!
Thanks Joe, it really was a wonderful piece of oak. Thanks so much for your comments 😊
🪵😃👍
My story line in 50 years. Grandma purchased the bowl when she was a younger woman. ....50 years into the future....The has come to settle her estate. Some of the family vaguely remembers when grandma talked of getting the bowl but they never really listened so it goes into the estate sale.
A young woman happens along and sees the beauty and craftsmanship of the bowl and happily purchases it. On the ride home she wonders, as she looks at the beautiful bowl beside her.. what is your story?
As she makes herself a cup of tea, admiring her fabulous find, she clicks on youtube. And what do you think is first in her feed? Of course this video! Now the circle is completed.
Beautiful works as always!
Hi Otakal, thanks for your comments. Now that would be a great way to round the circle.😃
Hope all is well?
