    So as a manga reader and anime watcher I can tell you this (1) A lot of the clothes come from color spreads (2) Changes were made to condense entire arcs into one episode and (3) While also trying to please us fans theyvare also trying to bring in new fans to the series. It's not the greatest show ever but its damned good for sure and people just want to hate on it. This LA series is #1 in multiple countries, broke a curse, and broke multiple records already. Ik everyone wont like it, ik some fans of the manga/anime wont like it, there's fans like myself that do and that's ok. I'm more happy that One Piece is successful in all three categories Manga, Anime, & Hollywood and i love that more eyes are on One Piece.

      I'm definitely not on the side of "this is the worst" but I'm definitely not on the side of "this is the best!" I have a feeling that next season will not have as big of a reception, unfortunately. I look at it from the bare bones of what is the quality of this media, and from my perspective as someone working as a storyboard artist. It's not the best quality show, and while a bit of fun and unique to those unfamiliar with the IP, it's very rough around the edges with questionable direction choices. It could have been so much worse, and in general it was interesting, but I don't see them getting farther than a season 3, at least if it stays at this quality level. (Keep in mind, OP is internationally loved already and while some fans loved it, lots also didn't, so a good number will most likely not continue. Watch numbers don't necessarily translate to likes, so those numbers can't really be relied on.)
      I think its important to remember that those that are voicing their dislike are doing so because of their love for One Piece. They probably aren't seeing what made them fall in love with the series, or are scared that what was changed or missed will changed what they loved later on in the plot. Most fans want to share what they love

    • @CMfuell
      @CMfuell Před 8 měsíci +3

      Tbh if this came out at a time that several other massive hits were going, and not during a time where major studios and IPs are tanking left and right, this LA OP wouldn't have made much noise.
      It's not terrible, but it's also not very good. It feels like a B movie and there are far too many issues to just give it a pass on.
      Anything from 4/10 to 6/10 is easily justifiable, but 8, 9 or 10/10? Your just fanboying.

    • @Bendylife
      @Bendylife Před 8 měsíci +2

      @CMfuell yeah I totally agree with this take. I think a lot of people also probably don't remember much of the beginning arcs, also are scared that if they complain they will shut down the show, which could have happened with enough negative feed back, but the idea that it will also get better with overly positive reviews is slim as well. This is Netflix, they aren't going to spend more if people like it the way it is.
      Just from an objective look, there were a lot of mistakes in filming and the story really was all over the place. Quality could have been much better.

    I honesty feel the majority of people are comparing the success of the manga/anime and seeing how mostly accurate it is, therefore it must be good! There are key elements in anime and manga that LA doesn't have that allow a story or something like Luffy turning into a balloon to be believable. The vivid colors of the anime, character proportions, sound, and the ability to cut much faster in those mediums all contribute to world building. Look at how Studio Trigger flipped the script with Cyberpunk Edgerunners and used animation to make something unique in its own way. The clean uniforms was the first of many examples to break the immersion of having me believe this was a real pirate world. I also find it hard to believe a world out there exist where netflix reads a script for episode 200 yet alone 1000 and doesn't have to make major changes. On the other hand, I am happy that the show is getting much more exposure I just hope it is getting more people into anime rather then steering them away.

    I've been following one piece for 20 years, and had the lowest expectation when watching it, and was pleasantly surprised.
    Is it the best? No. Is it cringe? A little. Is it cheezy? Of course there are some cheese. But the most important is, was it fun to watch? YES.
    But isn't that also what the original one piece is? A balance of seriousness and goofiness and fun.
    And you can tell that they actually cared about the product and put a lot of effort and small details in the show, that you'll have to REALLY know One Piece to catch it.
    So, over all, I enjoyed it, but it's okay if others didn't I can understand why, because i'ts not one to one, but IMO, you can't do one to one in live action, and for now, I think they did a decent job here.

      The plot can be cut and mangled. I don't really care, but changing characters into something different, is what makes it not OP for me. And the main character in this show isn't Luffy. It's some cosplayer, that looks a lot like him, but is way more considerate and aware about people and events around him. Doesn't just blurt out what pops into his head, doesn't just do whatever he feels like. And without Luffy, this is not OP.

    I personally rate the live action a 8/10 as a OP fan i felt like this truly captured the spirit of one piece without hating on the source material. There were some flaws like fast pacing, some removed important scenes, and the background characters feeling too normal while the MCs stand out ridiculously. However, those flaws feel small compared to the positives like setting up the new generation surpassing the old theme, koby and helmpeppo dynamic being a great highlight, syrup village arc getting a overall upgrade, inaki bringing a hard character like luffy to life, and many more stuff. I feel like with a season 2 they can perfect their formula and bring out something truly great.

    • @yohaneslouise2961
      @yohaneslouise2961 Před 9 měsíci +2

      To me personally, as a fan who has lived much longer than most Gen Zers who've just started this series, whether it's the original or not, I have to say that this is a pleasant surprise for me. The fast pacing was meant to be done because, let's face it, you cannot make it out 100% the same as the anime. To be honest, I do like this story a lot because everything makes sense and there is much better writing. The original one, if I have to say, is full of cliché stuff that is supposedly enough if Oda wants to, but he can make it better and even more practical with its approach to the story itself without making it too much of a drag. I get it; every part of it has to be synced, but not all of it has to be revealed, or even too much info on the story. This one covers perfectly by giving us the perfect amount of output without taking the crucial input that has to be put in.
      If people would like to say something like "Oh, but we don't get to see Django, or even the 3 kids that's supposed to be Usopp's first crew, or even the most touching part is about the dog that protects the owner's pet store, WE WANT THAT!" if you are one of those people that took a liking to that crappy bullshit cliché stuff, then I suggest you don't watch the live action, period. Perspective wise, Oda from before and Oda from present, in which he has already been mastering his craft for 20 years in writing and drawing, must have a reason why he agreed to change it because the story in the beginning doesn't make sense because there's so little of a background for that character that he can do at that time, but right now, it would be an incredibly stupid reason if you want to stick to the original material, which I already said based on the fact that there is not much information or even a solid background. It just doesn't make sense if you don't use any resources that you have, especially for the world that's been established so far with its massive background story that you can lay it out in the beginning without making that much of an impact but still meaningful, but somehow people who watch One Piece or are fans of it don't like it but are still stupidly stuck in the past. It just doesn't make any sense. It's like you want to watch a 90's writing style of story that doesn't have much information just for the sake of nostalgia, while the actual facts are that you can make the story more plausible, updated, or even much more sensible but still meaningful to the standard of what we have now, which arguably can still be better than the old ones. It's just a foolish attempt, an insult to a writer, artist, or even any creator such as Oda-sensei.
      Let me make a quote from one of my favorite artists, Queen. Freddie used to say "Do whatever you want to my music; just don't make it boring", Isn't that what Oda-sensei should do, especially with his old stuff and the fact that he owns it? If he didn't do it, I would be questioning his credibility as a writer more than ever.

    Luffy not dying from ingesting the poison is a big error from the showrunners. He's definitely not immune to poison as you'll see later on in the anime. Showing his grandpa so early was also a big mistake, it cheapens the reveal that Luffy is related to a legend of the Marine. Here we haven't had the time to properly scale the world they're in to truly appreciate how important this revelation is.
    And I agree with you, the eyebrows drive me crazy too, especially Nami and Shanks when all they had to do was to cast two redheads. What is it with Hollywood hating redheads so much? I also noticed just like you that they did everything in their power to avoid showing Luffy's powers too much, probably because there's no way not to make it look ridiculous to a degree. They won't be able to keep doing that though if they really want to go far into the story. The fights are also kind of cheap. It's okay in this arc, but with Crocodile & Baroque Works coming, they absolutely need to recruit a high level action director for season 2. Speaking of which, good luck to them adapting Chopper...
    Overall, it's a decent adaptation, it was clearly made with love for the source material and it's got good things going for it, but ultimately it's kind of pointless. It doesn't do anything that the anime doesn't do better and it rushes through the story more than anything else. I give it a 6/10.

      I gave it the same rating myself, it wasn't perfect, and there are some things I would have changed, such as
      1. Captain Morgan being more Brutal, it didn't make sense for him to get arrested.
      2. Helmepo needed to go in for a strike on the kid, as Zoro Defends her, and keeps him from hitting her, Luffy said he protected the girl, no Helmepo was leaving and then Zoro instigated it. and then things proceed as they did.
      3. Ben Beckman, I wouldn't have casted who they did, he was definitely the worst casted.
      4. Sanji Needed to witness the Mihawk and Zoro Fight, it was essential in Sanji Joining the Crew and giving him the Inspiration in following his dreams.
      I wouldn't have changed the Alvida Portion, that was fire. And for Alvida not being as Ugly as she is in the Manga/Anima, do you really want a woman as ugly as her? Is there anywoman in the world who can actually act as well as Ilia Isorelýs Paulino, and be as Ugly as Anime/Manga Alivida? Don't think so.

      …But the more grounded combat was really cool and creative. You could tell all of the actors knew what they were doing and for me a lot of it felt quick and snappy in a really satisfying way without having to use a bunch of cutting to keep the energy up.

    I agree 100%. Luffy in the anime doesn't talk nearly as much as his LA counter part. Luffy watches people. He watches in silence as he makes his judgment and that was totally missing in the LA. Also the idea that he would sneek into a base or make a bet with Nami felt so out of character.
    It was so incredibly dark to the point where i couldn't see everyone on screen.

    Garp... dont have to say more. The power scaling is already garbage with nami beating marines at the beginning of the series.

      "How dark and serious it is" well this isn't based in the anime, this is based in the Manga which is darker and more serious sometimes than the Anime, the anime got nerfed in some things

    OP fan since 2004.
    I think the live action is just Ok, You don't have to say "I love One piece" every 5 seconds, this is something this fandom do constantly and are scared to not support it, like come on, thats stupid.
    Is a 5 out 10 show.
    Of all thing they could adapted to live action why pick one piece which is one of the most colorful and crazy adventure Mangas of all time? It just doesn't work.
    Sanji was probably the best character.
    Also no, luffy doesn't meet garp until Episode 300 plus in Return to Water 7 mini arc.

      5/10 is quite harsh. I don't have any particular attachment to One Piece, tho I watched like 300 episodes of it like 15 years ago... But, this show got me excited. Shows rarely do that to me. Haven't watched all of it yet, but it's been just so nice. It has moments and characters from the anime as nostalgia bait, but it just genuinely functions as a good show. Good pacing, great characters, and a world that feels oddly alive. No idea about the budget but it feels to me like they're squeezing a lot of value of the budget they have, things are shown in very effective ways. Like, Luffy superpowers remind me of 80's movies, the effects are expensive, so you use all kinds of creative tricks to get maximum oomph out of those, combine practical effects. As a result it just feels so much more real than some purely CGI thing.

    because that's how it's supposed to be translated but that's not the main issue if this "adaptation"

    I disagree with your thoughts on Luffy. I really like Iñaki Godoy as Luffy. He really captutes the vibe of Luffy. Overall, I loved the One Piece Live action.

    I mean the early chapters up to the Arlong arc did feel like a small world(until we get to Chopper where it does become a lot bigger in terms of what will be explored) but this adaptaion makes it even smaller and on the topic of coloring eyebrows: Yes they should be colored to match the hair IF they also had it in the source material
    if you told me this was 2.5million then I could believe it but there's no excuse to have 150mill going into something that most cosplayers and privet/indie CGI artists could do way better with $1000
    that said I do agree this feels like a turning point and great review \;)

    Zoro and Luffy are not far in age, but we can't help how some people look age wise. Zoro is about a year or 2 older than Luffy, the like action Zoro is 6 years older than the live action Luffy. I do see what you're saying, but they did cast them with Zoro being older. Unlike Charmed where the character playing Piper was actually the youngest of the sisters even when they introduced Paige.

    I rlly liked the LA but I’m a manga reader and the show was an adaptation of the manga. I never had a problem with luffy as he did a very good job imo. Zoro’s fights all looked rlly good and for the changes in syrup village honestly made it better and kuro a more memorable atagonist
