Why I Don't Recommend Royal Enfield

  • Every time Royal Enfield launches a new line up of motorcycles, they call them so much better than previous ones. And every time motorcyclists find many faults and short comings. Here's why, after fifteen years riding motorcycles, I don't recommend Royal-Enfield motorcycles to my friends.
    Would I buy a Royal Enfield Interceptor, Meteor, or Himalyan? Not if it was going to be my only method of transportation. Maybe as a second or third motorcycle. But only if it was very, very, cheap, and only because I can do a lot of maintenance and repairs myself.

    I bought demonstrator RE 650cc twin a year ago (it was a year and a 1000km old then). So far the only problem I've had is a relay that suffered from a liberal amount of off-white grease on its pins (turns out that is a common problem). There was a small amount of oil leaking onto the garage floor (reminded me of British bikes of the 1960's) but after checking the tappets that has gone away (I'm thinking that might have been from the rocker box cover gasket, disturbed during that tappet gap check). So far I'm impressed by this bike.

BTW i was already a capable mechanic at that point. Later i found out the bike had been abused by a previous owner. Point is, there are always lemons out there (but unfortunately your experience was with a much newer bike). My next 100,000 off miles were largely trouble free on a few other bikes, including another Honda. Most of this mileage was done on an old Bonnie that is widely considered to be unreliable , leaks oil, slow, etc. Not my experience at all. If I'd given up riding due 'That Honda' i would have missed out on decades of good times.

    • @YouMotorcycle
      @YouMotorcycle  Před 2 lety

      Correct, but I work in the industry and have worked in the industry for over a decade, been riding bikes for over 15 years. There aren't very many Royal Enfields on the road. They aren't common motorcycles, like say, a Street Twin, or a CBR600, and yet we see a good number of failed Royal Enfields, especially when you consider how few are on the roads here. ...and like I said in the video, typically most of the motorcycles that go into dealerships for service, it's because the owner failed the motorcycle (neglected one component, or the whole motorcycle itself) like failing to replace brake fluid and getting poor brake performance, or failing to replace brake pads and now also needing rotors, etc. Whereas when the Enfields come into the shop, it's usually the opposite: the motorcycle components have failed the owner. And that's the difference between quality motorcycles and, well, stuff built way too cheap.

Sure, you don't learn about those on a day's test drive, but it's astonishing not one 'reviewer' took a look at web forums and such, to see that there is trouble everywhere with these things. Sad thing is some of these reviewers must know. But they rather keep their good relationship with the dealer than be honest about the product.

    • @YouMotorcycle
      @YouMotorcycle  Před rokem +1

      Unfortunately positive reviews tend to do a lot better on CZcams as they get much more positive engagement because people are financially, emotionally, and ego invested in the products... While the look nice. Having owned two of them now for a year. I can honestly say they are rubbish.
    They totally failed in out market. Royal Enfield entered the Taiwan market in 2012 and pulled out in 2020. After 8 years they were forced to leave with the importer now stuck with around 100 bikes he had been trying to sell, but no one will buy. Even second hand dealers won't touch them. Why did they fail? The poor service Enfield offered and the long wait times to get parts.
    Just to give you an example of how much value they lost with in the first years. A Continental GT sold new in 2019 for NT$499,500 (around 14,800 Euros). On the second hand market now on bikes that have less than 4000km on them. Owners are trying to get rid of them for as little as NT$100,000 ( around 3000 Euros). Some are even going for less.
    All this "vintage style". is really nothing,. but marketing.
    the two that I had were a Classic 500 and Himalayan. The Classic 500 started leaking oil at 6000km from both the gearbox and cylinder head and the camshaft had to be replaced at 9000km. Oh yes, also the headlight fell off while I was on the expressway doing 100kmph. The Himalayan started leaking oil from the engine at around 7000kmm and the frame also cracked.

    Some might say that having a bike that is constantly leaking oil and petrol was in keeping with the finest traditions of a classic British bike and that the "new, new" Royal Enfields are faithfully recreating those far off halcyon days of good ol' British bikes! Others, like me, would point out that bikes like that are precisely the reason for the demise of those famous names of old! You are quite right, at ten years old it should not be spending 75% of its time in the workshop. My own Harley is 23 years old, looks as good as new, does NOT leak anything and only sees the workshop for its annual service. The rest of the time it's stabled in MY garage or being ridden and enjoyed, which is exacly as it should be.

      @Jip Jackson I was basing my original comment on the experience I had, albeit many years ago now, of owning a Triumph T140V Bonneville, which at that time was barely SIX years old. I'd always wanted one but after 12 months of owning that one I sold it because it had been about as reliable as a British Rail timetable, had a nasty habit of getting you TO somewhere and refusing to get you home again, DID leak oil no matter how many times you tried to cure it and did become a bottomless pit for sinking money into. Never owned one? Never owned ANOTHER one, is more accurate!
      I have owned five Hondas, all bar one were unburstable. (One CB400N had its camchain tensioner break). The one Kawasaki I owned suffered a crank bearing failure which was replaced under warranty by Kawasaki. My two previous Yamahas both ran faultlessly but the XJ600 suffered from corrosion after one year of ownership and the dealership took it back. The one 850 Guzzi I've owned is STILL running at 41 years of age. I have no complaints about either of the two Harleys I've owned, but when I did ring Meriden about my Bonnie, I was told they were going into receivership and their dealerships ( in my case at the time, Harvey Owen's in London) would also cease to carry parts or continue sales and servicing. Now I've been riding since 1979 and I've never had anything like that experience with ANY other brand of motorcycle that I've ever owned. Maybe I've just been lucky with all the others, or was just unlucky with the Triumph, eh? Trouble is, two my mates have also had Triumphs and the guy I know who rides a modern Speed Triple could fill this column with its electrical problems for you. Ya paus ya money and makes ya choice, but any choices I've ever made have never included British bikes since 1982 and that is based on My experience and those of two of my friends, one of whom reached the same conclusion as me after owning a 650 Tiger and a 750 Bonnie. The other guy with the Speed Triple? He's still pouring his hard-earned into its electrics!

Sure triumph and the Japanese offerings will be better but also a lot more expensive. As regards servicing a newer model interceptor or continental, the book says every 3000 miles, this is only an inspection of chain, tyres, brakes, fluid levels etc which should be done weekly if you ride every day. Oil and filters, and valve clearances are done at 6000 miles, or every year, whichever comes first. I'm considering buying one as servicing is cheap and simple too, easy to do in a couple of hours on a Saturday morning.

No recall because it affected too small a percentage of bikes for them to care. Still had to pay that bike off.
    I'd much rather drop $5k on something and do minor preventative maintenance more often than the industry standard. It'll still be on the road more often than a Harley.

      How are you claiming enfields are trash if you went and looked at an old one

      @@laligagging I don't think you watched the video. It's clearly explained.

    how can you criticize RE when showing a not original tank. Makes you look like you are not up to the facts. I am not a RE fan boy. I own a Harley Sportster XL1200c although i do like the RE brand.

      It is original, you're just not familiar with the model. Do your research. Look up Royal-Enfield Chrome Cafe Racer. And don't forget the low mileage engine that leaks is also original 😂

    Everyone’s opinion is different when it comes to bikes I’ve had good and bad experiences with all types of bike. They’re no different than cars. Every manufacturer has made something that wasn’t perfect. One person can get a RE and had it for 15 years and never had a issue and someone else can get that same model and obviously have issues. I think it’s the luck of the draw. Am I right if I suggest to someone to never buy a ford because me and most people I know think they are shit and have issues because we have owned them. No. It’s just my opinion and like assholes everybody has one 😊

      Maybe one person can have a RE for 15 years and have no problems, but I challenge you to find two people who can honestly both say that 😂

      Here's someone else from my city with Royal Enfield problems. His started 3 days after buying it brand new. The bike would not turn back on and ended up needing to be completely replaced: www.gtamotorcycle.com/xf/threads/new-royal-enfield-dealer-in-town.214675/page-2#post-2770523

    A 535 single is very old tech and tooling. The twin and new 350 models are much higher quality.
