- We decide to finish the exterior of our house with a clear penetrating oil, with UV protection. We added Bug Juice to it to keep the insects for landing on our wood siding and bulding there homes.

In May of 2015 we moved back to New Hampshire, to where we are going to reclaim our 8.5 acres, and turn it into our modern homestead. We built the house the first summer. Now we invite you along in our journey of reclaiming the land, bringing livestock back on the land, gardening, permaculture, and all of our out of the box thinking DIY projects. We are excited to document the process of bringing the land back to its natural functioning beauty, using animals, and organic techniques to help heal it and thrive.

He is a handy man, keep up the good work.
Looks great
That oil makes it beautiful!!
Looks nice. Cool idea with the bug juice. Next time consider leaning your ladder on the roof, and maybe some eye protection for when the oil and pesticide is spraying in your face
looks awesome
Wow ran into this old video of you Al. Didn’t recognize You
Must be the beard. You’ve z one a long way u your video presentation and all. Appreciate your videos very much. Very interesting!
looks awesome!
Can't have enough bug juice! Awesome job.
Look great look awesome 💒👍
Thank you! Beautiful! Sooo much to learn....sooo glad to hear it's not every 2-3 years even though you make it look easy ...btw not sure, but I wonder if charred wood needs less maintenance.
Looks great!
thanks
Looks very nice. In Your more recent videos, the house looks more brown.
I had a knotty pine kitchen in my previous home, and love the look.
It's crazy that you posted this video. I live in a log home and just recently finished staining the exterior of the logs and all of the porches.
+Arms Family Homestead that is to funny. What did you use for stain
+Lumnah Acres well my log home is over 30 years old and has been stained several times in the past. We used a solid color stain made by Cabot.
Arms Family Homestead Nice. How was that to do
+Lumnah Acres It wasn't bad at all. I bought a cheap airless sprayer and sprayed it on. I then followed up the sprayer with a heavy brush just to work it into the wood. It wasn't hard at all, like you said the prep work is what seems like more work. I did have to pressure wash the whole house first though.
I like it!!!
That’s crazy doing that without a respirator
Looks good
looks good ...
Looks Great.
thanks
I use shingle oil made for wood shingles and fences.
The oil finish looks so good. Did you make videos of you building the house?
Can you tell me how many gallons it took for your home? Love the look. We are building now!
interesting thank you.
thanks for watching
I use that same oil but it doesn't dry. My house has wood siding and I was wondering if I should mix something in the oil to make it dry faster because it takes months to dry.
Got to love that smell of bug perfumes. Nerve damage you can get do the bugaloo .lol
I'm just curious about how well the oil and bug juice is holding up on the house ? I'm trying to build my own house right now. And wanted to do rough saw lumber. And I am very curious about the longevity of doing this?
Thanks for the video! How long it took to get the smell off the wood/house?
I wonder if there is another seal coat you can put on, so it will last,
And kids, don't forget to wear a respirator and to soak your oily rags in water to prevent spontaneous combustion!
Great job! Where can I purchase the bug juice? Is it good for carpenter bees?
Al what is the bug juice made of. ???
Excellent video
Thank you
Linda from Ct
Can the bug juice be applied by its self. I have a spider, dirt dauber and wasp problem in the Eve's of my duplex.
I don't want to loose the white pine look to my knotty pine siding; would you recommend a product that will protect my home without changing the color of the siding?
Great video!...Have you ever tried linseed oil? How does it compare?
Looks nice. How often do you intend to reapply the oil? Looks like a great, low maintenance alternative to paint or stain.
i say every 5-10 years. that why we chose it it is low maintenance and still protects the wood. thanks for watching
THANKS for the Bug Juice recommendation. That is new to me. Certainly need to apply to our place.
YW! It Works great!
Lumnah Acres: Thanks for the reply but I'm not sure what "YW" means?
Cliffside Acres YW, is short for your welcome.
Looking back would you recommend this oil still? I have to do my house soon.
I am trying to spray a ceiling and I am not getting a nice fume, only big huge drops. It is taking forever to color the cracks and joints
new to your channel how big is you house. was it a old barn that you restored. or did you build it. it a great design. any ways nice job. I am originally from Massachusetts but I currently live in South Carolina and I am looking to move back to and buy property in keene nh
Thank you. There was a house here that had burnt. We built our house on the foundation. We will be almost neighbors. LOL, I am originally from MA too. The house is 32x48. I am glad you subscribed!
The house looks really nice. The oil really brings out the beauty of the siding. Are you planning to install gutters?
thanks. no we don't plan on doing gutters. we would have to take them off every winter or the snow coming off the metal roof would rip them off
Whats up with that foundation by the walk out basement?????
WHAT? NO RESPERATOR? TSK TSK!
Seriously! That's not a casual statement. Oil vapors can cause respiratory and neurological problems. But what am I? The State of California?? Always where a respirator and soak your rags in water to prevent combustion!
What type of oil brand did you use? I built a redwood fence and planning on using Penofin clear uv oil. Is there anything else you can suggest on using, thank you.
that's the same brand and kind I used. I would add bug juice to it to keep the bugs from land on it and building nest
was this a kit that you bought for the house and turn it into a house?
Did I understand correcty that you used "clear" stain? It looks like it adds a nice color. to the wood?
Yes, it is a clear oil with UV protector in it
Great, I will give it a try. Thanks for the fast response and nice video!
How has clear stain held up for you?
Hey how has the log oil held up ?????
Hoe much coverage do you get with 5 gallons?
Can you oil all of it at one time?
Al, do you sell anything that you raise?
I built a raw wood chicken house...would this be safe to use on that? I know I need to do something to preserve it and I did not want to paint it.
yes just make sure the oil doesn't get on them when you apply it. it does have a smell but it is not that strong and it goes away in a few days. thanks for watching
I appreciate the video. Can you spray this oil over wood that was previously stained?
+Off Grid Nation yes you can I would try it on a small spot to make sure you like the look of it. It is a penetrating oil so it might not soak in as deep since there is stain on the wood
Thanks for the reply. I'm was planning on re-staining my cabin but I think I'll go this route. Thanks again.
+Off Grid Nation no problem. Thanks for watching
OMG, turn down the volume of the music
You think a polyurethane would work with that pump as well
my dad used to apply log oil to the exterior of our cedar cabin. it looked beautiful 30 years later. now we cant buy it in CA for some reason you have to go to Nevada or someplace. seems so stupid we cant get certain products here anymore. my mom used to add lead to her paint she says it makes the paint last twice as long. (they owned their own homes, they are very well maintained, no small children so it wasn't a problem.)
Yes CA has some strict laws.
Good video except for the ear-splitting music....not at all necessary.
I think you need to put gutters on every building and the house
Dog is not sure who you are conversing with!
i heard you dont have to wipe it but you are
on the rough wood you don't need to wipe it it soaks in. but on the smooth trim it doesn't soak in as fast
That music sucks
