  • Today Melissa and I started staining and sealing the woodshed, I am very pleased with the Ready Seal we bought, I just have to figure out the best way to apply it. It works great on rough cut lumber off the mill and Im sure it would be a great stain sealant for fences, decks, sheds, or any wood that you want to protect from the elements.

Mike I'm a retired fence builder and I would stain our fences with the same type of sprayer you purchased and it worked fine but with a different stain product. We would have a guy with a roller following the guy spraying. No matter how careful ,the product will run down the boards and our product would spray on a wider span than what your sprayer was pushing out of your spray tip.

I have been a residential painter for the past 16 years and I enjoy it very much. My advice for you is to get an airless sprayer, spray with a 213 tip and back roll all surfaces. It’s best to apply heavy and lay-off with a 1/2 roller nap. When the roller is soaked, you can unload it on a dry area off the woodshed that is next to be stained (so you won’t have double coated areas). I’m happy to answer any questions that arise. I’d offer my help but I’m in northern Michigan and that’s a hike for me for half a days work. Lol.

Mike, I once painted a house for my cousin and he had an old cellar house he wanted painted also. The cellar house siding was old rough lumber that hadn't been painted in about 30 years. I tried using a brush and a roller and it was going to take a lot of paint and a lot of time to do a small building. I bought a Wagner power sprayer and it did a fantastic job. I still have it and love it, especially for rough cut lumber. It doesn't atomize the paint so bad that you get all that over spray like an air sprayer. You get a little but not too bad. They are well worth the cost. It will work on thin stain or a good thick latex.

I had a guy visit my neighborhood while it was finishing up being built. He did my fence for $350. He had a few 5 gallon buckets and a huge auto detailing sponge. He soaked up the sponge and wiped each panel, then he had an asistant follow behind him with a 8" brush to back brush and avoid drips and runs. They worked quick and covered alot of area fast. The sponge really helped get in between the panels. I was really pleased with the outcome.

Used Ready Seal on a 110' of fencing built with 6' white cedar panels. Wife and I brushed it on each panel, front and back, before mounting them to the posts. The 5 gal size was just enough, and the results looked fantastic. I'll try a sprayer in a few years (hoping 4-5) when it needs another application, as it's pretty thin, and should spray fine.

As someone how has done many stainings of decks for customers, I found this product to be the best yet. I chose to use the roller method to be the best and use a medium-size brush to stain the sides of the boards to really make a nice finish. This product is oil-based and will beat all other products oil or water-based. I do work for many very off customers who expect perfection and long-lasting products. Spraying does not give as good of results and the overspray creates more work and clean up.

Great product MIKE, just pump up the sprayer until it gets tight and keep it pumped up tight. This is stain and not water so it takes a lot of pressure to make it spray!! I know it is thin but not as thin as water. I installed a tire air valve in my tanks and use my air compressor to pressure up all my spray bottles. Works great!!! Try it.

  • @larryfromlincolncountywa3989

Hi, Mike. I have used a larger, heavy-nap roller for putting color on old stucco and it works really good. It was a milk-wash stain, much the same consistency as your stain, I think, and it filled and covered really well. And, the plus side is that it was very conservative on the stain.

Mike and Melissa, the stain looks great!! I have a fence staining project coming up and will definitely consider the Ready Seal. A rented or purchased airless sprayer (Graco X7 - around $400.00) would be the fastest way to get it done but the spray tanks work fine for smaller jobs like this. Use a tip with a wide spray pattern and adjust (twist) the tip to fine tune the pattern and volume. Consider re-stirring and thinning the stain if it won't go through the nozzle. I've stained my fences multiple times with good result using a spray tank. Have to use the right spray tip, keep the pressure up and have someone chase you with a roller on a pole. It goes extremely fast. Your whole shed could be stained in an hour our so with a spray tank and a helper on a roller. If you decide to go with just a roller, put your stain in a 5 gallon bucket with a grate. Apply with a roller on a pole and chase drips with a brush. Much faster than a tray.

I’ve done a lot of rough sawn pine staining, the best and easiest is to stain it before assembling the structure. The easiest application method. I found was the use of a painting pad that has a rough bristly surface that gives you the final brush like finish without brushing it in. I have also used a roller and sprayer for fast application but both require brushing out with a brush or pad to get even penetration.

Hey M&M, good morning. Finally a question I can answer, what me and my crew (2 guys) have always done is use a 9" long nap roller cover on a full size frame with a four or six ft. pole ( adjustable is best ) working out of a five gallon bucket with a roller screen, apply as much as the wood wants and then back brush to work it in always keeping a wet edge. Hope that helps! Love the look that people are talking about!😂😂✌🏻️

I have stained my white pine log cabin several times over the last 18 years. I tried an airless sprayer that pulls from the can of stain directly but I still had to back brush to work the stain in then I had to clean the sprayer which takes a while. No time saved at all. I now use only a 4" brush right out of the can. A Purdy staining brush works best. Cheaper brushes do not hold enough stain or clean up as well so they are too much work. I enjoy your channel and look forward to your next projects.

Tried them all, brush, roller, sprayer, best luck I have ever had was a wide 5 inch natural bristle brush that allows the handle to unscrew and I screw in a broom handle so I can stand back and soak the stuff into the lumber. Mike, I’ve had good luck on fences with my HVLP sprayer. It has a turbine for pressure and it doesn’t require a lot of power so my small 1500W generator is easy to haul around and a gallon of gas will keep it running all day. I used this combination on my 4 board fencing that I have on 900’ of frontage. I loaned it to my brother for the same kind of job and it worked well for both of us. I’m a huge fan of HVLP. I use it for spray painting walls and applying finishes on furniture I make. One way to make spraying easier is to do while the lumber is laying flat - before nailing it up. You can apply your product thicker with almost no runs.

Mike, I am not a professional painter, but a Wagner airless sprayer may be your best bet. I painted a metal building, 24x32 old tin, with a Wagner. Worked out well. Good coverage was easy to obtain.
I have also use an air sprayer to paint equipment. Used it all one summer, got good too.

On the sprayers I have, if you tighten the nozzle end it sprays wider, if it's lose it sprays a stream. It would also help to add pressure, as that will aid in spaying wider patterns.

Did my house(cedar shingles), deck and posts using a roller. Applied from the bottom up, as the stain came out of the wet roller it was pushed up the wood. I thought it worked very well.
I have also used an airless pressure sprayer, which worked well, but I don't think it put as much stain into the wood.

I had good results with Devilbiss sprayer. Right air pressure forces it into the wood and all the small cracks.

A good high pressure sprayer will actually help it imbed into the wood better which will in turn make it last longer in my experience. Also I really want to thank you for telling me about Buckin' Billy Ray and his channel now I have both of you for inspiration. Much love and respect to you and your family ❤

I just did my cedar fence with Ready Seal. I did half with the roller and half with a Graco corded paint gun. It was obviously faster with the paint sprayer and in my opinion it went on better too. With Ready Seal the run off smoothed out and it looked great. I do hope the ready seal lasts at least 3 yrs.

I bought a pump sprayer to stain the backyard fence and it did the same exact thing. I ended up using a Wagner Sprayer and it worked well. However, there was a lot of stain wasted because it goes on heavy.

I have a 63 ft handicap ramp for my wife. I waited a year to stain because of the treated wood. I used a 4 inch brush for the whole ramp. My father was a carpenter and he always said a brush is the best for working the stain into the wood. I think a roller with a thicker nap and they have brushes made for stain as well. Not sold on a paint sprayer for a solution.

My old house had cedar siding and I used a Wagner power painter. The first time I stained that house I did it with a 3" brush and it took about 25 hours. The Wagner could do it in about 7

I try to stain everything horizontal. No dripping that way, if you do it right. That would mean staining before you put the boards up. Maybe that is something you could try on your next project. I appreciate your intuitive approach on most things and am impressed with all your battery powered tools, and accessories.
Keep them going. You present these topics and a very interesting way.

Roller Tip.....I’ve allows used a handle extension on my roller regardless of the job. Usually a sawed off broom stick normally 18” to 24” long, or even 36”. It Provides leverage and additional distance overhead and below. Plus saves bending over each time you apply more stain / paint to the roller.

I did the cedar siding on my house with a Wagner Power Painter about 10 years ago. Other than having to fill the small paint reservoir all the time it worked great.
The siding was rough cedar plywood and you couldn't put enough stain on with a roller or brush, it was like painting a sponge.

Wooster Bravo stain brush on an extension pole to back brush after you spray, works perfect.
