Gareth Southgate is right about Euro 96, except in the group stage we had seen the 4-1 victory vs Netherlands, one of England's greatest performances. The game against Scotland was against a strong Scotland side at the time and we had seen the magic of Gazza. The Spain game was extremely boring but we had seen the passion and determination to come through a penalty shootout after losing so many before. It's not really comparable to the dross we have seen against much worse opposition thus far.

England were vulnerable in that Scotland game though.

The problem with Southgate's 1990 & 1996 analogies is it assumes that England are going to get better, when we have yet to see any evidence of that. This isn't the fault of the players. It's Southgate's stubborn persistence in starting with Trippier & Foden both out of position on the left. This has failed 4 times in a row against weak teams. But because we've scrambled through to the QF he is perceiving it as working.

Big Sam & Steve Bruce & Gary Neville were spot on - that A- we were much better with 3 CBs & 2 Wingbacks.
That B- Foden & Trippiers own goal off side was awful in KO's. Usually a 99% game loser. Phil & KT are off it. They also messed up a free kick from a nice spot & lots of lefty over-laps by going inside with slow tired passing. They can't cope with KO pressure which whereas Jude & Trent & Palmer & Gordon & Rice & Kobbie enjoy it. The more the pressure the more they love it.
So Don't bash sweet bee 🐝 Jude & Harry & Gareth (who probably said a nice prayer & then decided to keep both on when they were v tired) & sweet 🐝 Jude delivered the honey (but Foden can't do it without ManC's 115 FFP con tricks funded expensive team & thier big squad rotations). Is Phil this generations Jimmy Greaves. Can't get it done in hot humid summer tournament's but is great in the cool autumn & spring months?

This 'victim' mentality will not translate into anything positive on the pitch unfortunately. The fact that Slovakia were ahead and still made two changes before we did (only because of the trippier injury) says everything we need to know about Southgate.
I wish they all understood that us fans would love England to bring it home, so the criticism is actually constructive and aimed mostly at GS, but he has managed to convince the players that it is aimed at them - hence the digs from Kane, JB and Rice towards the fans and media.
Ivan Toney coming on with 1 minute to go is everything that is wrong with StubbornGate.
Maybe it is written in the stars for him to bring it home, but with the run ins we've had for the last 8 years, to not lead to at least one glory is absolutely disgraceful. We had so many options after the WC and we've stayed with this piece of sh*t manager.
Two CDMs means 6 defenders on the pitch, (7 with the goalie) so we are relying on just 4 players - Foden, Bellingham, Saka and Kane to break down team with a low block (9-10 men behind the ball). We have played this same formation for 8 years and it isn't going to change until we part ways with GS.
Slovakia should have had scored at least two more goals and we were 30 seconds away from defeat but it's forgotten by a moment of magic from JB.. wether we win or not, get GS tf out of here.

Why do you all think Gareth is in their ear constantly telling them fans and media are criticising them? It's literal delusion. Fans and media ARE criticising them - Not only Southgate (FYI my issues with Southgate are in his starting formation & line-up, not with his game management. I think the issues are more fundamental and holistic than they are microscopic).
We're starting to see so many English fans and media trying to gaslight so hard. They can't bash players then avoid responsibility by saying "no, you shouldn't be affected by masses of negative fans" or "you're welcome, I talk crap and you get motivated, I get credit too". Most English people have the self-awareness of a 4-year-old, so I don't trust us as a fanbase to even realise the effect we have on the camp as a whole.
Generally speaking, you don't get to say "the criticism is actually constructive" just because you say it is - You have to actually behave that way for it to be true, and most vocal people aren't. They can't even explain why they believe their options are more viable, they just parrot what everyone else is saying. And also, keep in mind: England don't have international heritage. 58 years without a major trophy. To expect more than one trophy in 8 years is delusional and entitled.

@@C33Fernandez First and foremost, I said the criticism is aimed "mostly" at GS which is implying that some of it is aimed at the players as they haven't all performed well, including JB and Kane.
With regard to constructive criticism, do you honestly believe most England fans want to criticise to the detriment of the team? They are criticising in hope that GS will get a grip and address problems we've had over the 4 games which are ultimately down to GS's selection and largely down to his in game management. The left side has remained unbalanced and Gordon is sitting on the bench whilst Foden is being played at LW which clearly does not work.
For you to suggest you have no issue with his game management speaks volumes to me tbh. Southgate will only make subs at 70 mins onwards unless he is forced to change. Gordon was brought in on 89' against Slovenia and Toney was brought in on 90+4' against Slovakia. They are having no time to make an impact on the game and Toney was lucky that JB scored the wonder goal as he would not have got to play an extra 30 minutes of ET.
England do have little football heritage but you completely misconstrued my point. I said considering the run ins we have had in the last 8 years, to not have won at least once is an absolute disgrace. How does this imply I think they should have won more than one trophy 🤔?

@@antwootz7723 I'm watching the camp go through shifts in mentality from the last two tournaments. Not because of Southgate, but as an immediate response to media and fan criticisms. The players can think and feel for themselves. The media is a conglomeration of opinion, not just any one voice, and certainly is fueled by clicks, minutes of media consumption and sponsors - NOT by reason. As such, the negativity comes through in droves. It doesn't come through on a transcript as if to say "Hi Gareth, this is what we think would work, hope you consider it, good luck". We KNOW it affects the camp given the recent press conferences, so we shouldn't avoid that responsibility.
And yes, it should speak volumes. I wont sit here and justify my approach to problems (it's my profession, and it works). Game management is *second* to fundamentals, which is why I put more focus on it. My point being when you start the right players in the right formation, you shouldn't have to "recover" with earlier substitutes: It is tangential, but if we're talking about it, 20 minutes is the least amount of time I'd give for a sub to impact the game. I've speculated that 20-30 is ideal for a number of reasons.
In previous tournaments, people were complaining that 5 minutes isn't enough. Now it's 20. People still complain. However, GS's substitutions at 85-90 minutes, for me, indicates that he was playing them for extra time, which is so risky in and of itself. I would never have maintained such blind faith that we'd even get the equaliser in the first place.
My opinion on GS's faulty tactics has been vocal on social media from the first group stage game, but I simultaneously offer my opinions to correct it - I don't attack GS's character, nor the players' attitude or ability (which IS what people are doing).
In actuality, we probably have a similar outlook on what the football *ought* to be. But I feel that the way the media and fanbase delivers their feelings is, by my perception, detrimental and would be met with stubbornness, not concession. What happens if GS does what the media and masses are saying and it fails. Do you really think GS will be excused of that failure?

A message for Bellingham........ the whole team hasn't been great the entire tournament so its more than fair for people to say "the team has been well below par" ever since they got there, take it on the chin, act like an adult and go out there and show the World who and what England are.
