    I have been suffering from depressions almost constantly, starting when I was a teenager. One day I was on my bike, and I just went going on and on and on, until I bonked. Strangely I felt very alive, and it was the first time I felt great, or anything for that matter, in years. I was never great at sports, but cycling I loved. And so my therapy began. After discovering GCN in 2014 I bought a road bike (and in 2015 another) and really got going. I haven't felt depressed in ages. Thank you GCN, and thank you cycling!

      +A Turk-American in Germany It really does work doesn't it, I feel at my best when I've been able to ride regularly. I'm not throwing cash away going to a gym. A bike is all you need, doesn't matter what it is, just get out and ride :)

    I was overweight, depressed, and drank to much. I started going to the gym and got heavy into cycling and now feel great. I lost most of the weight, could probably drop another 10 pounds, stopped drinking, and I'm no longer depressed. Cycling causes you to make good health decisions, you don't want to put in all the work and then eat poorly and set back the gains.

    I found this channel earlier this year after getting a bog standard inexpensive bicycle, and was able to travel further than I've ever been along the canal cycle route going on all sorts of adventures, seeing all sorts of things. It's been great riding a bicycle for pleasure, I would eventually like to build up the confidence to ride on A roads, dual carriageway, motorways and spiral roundabouts.

  • @FlatSpinMan
    @FlatSpinMan Před 8 lety

    So true. In my previous job I was on the train for 3-4 hours a day, travelling or working through meal times.
    Changed job, bought a cross bike and cycled to work.
    I saw the city I'd lived in for ten years from a completely different view; I got braver and more adventurous by biking up big hills then having to get back down again; obviously I got stronger, fitter, and healthier than I had been in years.
    Plus I joined the global community of like minded people who do similarly cool this GS and make great CZcams channels like this one.
    I've also managed to persuade at least 5 friends or coworkers to take up the sport so they can share in the fun.
    buying that cross bike five years ago has been one of the best things I've ever done.
    Upgrading to a roadbike would be a close second.

    I started cycling with a goal of losing weight, and that was pretty much the only thing I expected. What I got, in addition to losing said weight - about 20 kilos of it - was the end of random headaches, better memory (still crap, but much less crap than before), better tolerance to hot weather and vastly improved immune system (usually I only get ill in the beginning and at the and of cycling season).
    So yes, it's fair to say cycling did indeed improve my life.

    I have the stressfull life of a third world anaesthesiologist and for the sane reason I haven't got a lot of time to excesice, I've cycle all my life, but lately (a year ago) I said "f**k y'all, I don't need to show off in a big car, or go to work in a doctor'a costume...I'll commute", and life got better, I fought less with surgeons and lazy hospital personell, then I discover GCN trying to fix my bike muself... So guess what... I bought me a road bike (entry level) but I just loved it, a big difference from the three speed steel road bike I recycle in the early 80's... and life got even better... You guys have to make a video on jut how difficult cycling is. I mean nobody gives cycling the importance in sports it deserves. People think cycling is easy and dont really know ho difficult it is when compared to NBA, MLB, American Futbool... It cracks me up that people don't know how harsh cycling be.

From my experience, I was ridding with a friend of mine, and hes on a basketball team, he has traveled the world playing basketball, so you can say hes fit. But I was ridding with him and at the first climb he almost fainted... He hasnt touched his bike again. It just shows you how difficult cycling is.

    No. 6: Inspire others.

    • @charlesmansplaining
      @charlesmansplaining Před 8 lety +4

      +Mickey Pius I'm with you on that. I don't like cycling with other opinionated cyclists that think it's cool to tell me how I should dress and what colors to wear or the snobbish folks. I also don't like to wear a helmet any more, I'm sick of the stink, the sweat dripping into my eyes, and the headaches I get from wearing them. I very much enjoy riding for my health and going full gas when I feel like it, but when in groups everything always turns into a competition. When I mountain biked it was a different story, I always wore a helmet, and the people were cooler. So was the clothing.

    • @Metal.Is.A.Adicshun
      @Metal.Is.A.Adicshun Před 8 lety +4

      +Charles Rush I must say I disagree with you about wearing the helmet. I had a bad spill riding Roubaix 2 weeks ago and I'm still recovering at home. If I wasn't wearing a helmet I'm afraid I would be having this conversation from my coffin. I definetely don't like wearing the helmet but at eye watering speeds I'm achieving, I wouldn't dream of riding without one. (In this case it was 35 kph by the way).
      Other than that, we're on the same page, man...

    • @richardm9688
      @richardm9688 Před 8 lety +1

      +Charles Rush I don't know why but the mtb culture, in general, is more relaxed and people who I have met on mtb rides just get on with it, with the aim of having a good time in a group. My experience on road bikes has been a mixed bag. With some riders (mainly older ones) I find it has been relaxed with a focus on enjoying the riding and the day, but with a certain type of rider, usually the so called MAMIL on a pretty decent carbon steed dressed head to toe in sleek gear there appears to be some unwritten code of how you should look, speak. dress and ride your bike.
      There is definitely some pressure to appear to be seen a certain way. It's not just about the cycling any more in these groups. I find there is a kind of inverted snobbery with people who wouldn't normally in any other social group, using terms and words (especially if they are french words/expressions) thrown into the conversation, to appear to be 'in the know'.
      Together with trying to appear in a certain way this type of person is also likely to get angry or aggressive quickly when it comes to motorists and all the bad experiences they have had! My impression from some people is that they would like to buy a sports car, but can't afford one. Cycling on the other hand is more affordable (relatively). They put all their effort and being into cycling and the culture of cycling, perhaps to offset any insecurities they have about their background and as a person.
      Maybe I am reading too much into it but, I don't enjoy the experience of riding with people like this as they are constantly comparing themselves with others in every way. This can create an unnecessary pressure on people to outdo everyone else leading to a very showy/elitist cycling culture. I think, I may have experienced the extreme end, but I don't care to be involved with this aspect of club riding. Btw, I am British, maybe its a Brit thing?

    • @Metal.Is.A.Adicshun
      @Metal.Is.A.Adicshun Před 8 lety

      One of the things that winds me up the most is constant yelling 'car back!'. Well of course there is a car back. We're on the bloody road!! 2. Riding pro takes up 15-20 years of your life
    Result: 7-12 years lost!
