Russians opted for a smaller bypass ratio to trade efficiency for reduced drag. In the end this plane is competitive with Western counterparts. That's all that matters.
The reality: 1) All Russian civil aircraft were characterised by high operating costs & excessively long downtimes.
2) This also applied to the Superjet SJ 100. The result: in 2020 there were over 60 unsold & returned SJ 100s.
But almost no sales in the last 5 years!
3) The global market share of Russian civil aircraft (excluding Russia, Belarus) has therefore been less than 0.1% since 2000.
And another SSJ100 has just crashed. Oops. Too much vodka in the factory? Maybe a pilot was disliked by authorities, you know how the KGB like to help people smoke from a great height.

Ever since Boeing embraced diversity over meritocracy and woke philosophy replaced reliability planes started falling off the sky and disintegrating in midair, it takes a lot of stupidity for a plane window to fall off midair. I still prefer flying Boeing crafts over anything else but only those 15 years old and older when skin color or sexual orientation was not a qualification for the job.

Realistically, the war in Ukraine has completely ruined the civil aviation industry. Due to the economic sanctions imposed as a result of the war, the Russian aviation industry has to work with components of questionable quality from its own production in many areas instead of purchasing tried and tested systems on the global market.
Conversely, aircraft such as this one are out of the question for airlines in many countries, as logistics, spare parts supply etc. cannot be provided with the required quality.
The senseless war in Ukraine is claiming many victims. Russia's civil aviation industry is definitely one of them.
More like the sanctions have spurred Russian into self actualization and reliance. Though it may seem a bit difficult for Russia currently but the end results will certainly be in Russia's favor. No country is self sufficient I belief, even America imports bulk of their commodities from asia, but Russia has the potential and technical knowhow to completely decouple from the Western hegemony and aspire to greater height. I belief Russia will be great again, but first they have to secure their boarders from the warmongering alliance called nato, and safe guard the wellbeing of every Russian in Ukraine even if it means shredding kyiv to pieces.
@@ikechukwuendwellchimdindu1374 I believe that something completely different will happen: It is not the Russian aviation industry, but the Chinese aviation industry that has the potential to become a serious competitor to Western aviation companies. China is not willing to completely decouple itself from Western suppliers - for good reasons. This is precisely why, for example, the CR929 failed as a joint project.

There were four accidents/crashes involving superjets with total losses. However, of the approx. 110 delivered, around 60 were returned to the manufacturer in 2020 because the aircraft did not meet agreed reliability requirements.
