- Minster for Health Stephen Donnelly joined Kieran Cuddihy on The Hard Shoulder to discuss new legislation that passed through the houses of Oireachtas today.
Minister Donnelly says "The Safe Access Zones legislation will create a 100 meter safe zone around all health care providers, so that women who want to access termination of pregnancy services, and those providing the services, can do so free of harassment"
When asked if similar legislation could be proposed to create safe zones outside politician's houses, the Minister for Health says it's something we need to have a conversation around.

My father in law needed an urgent colonoscopy and they brought the appointment forward but he still had to wait three weeks. He literally passed away the day of the appointment with a perforated colon. 😢

Your not listening to the people, they have to threaten ye for ye to know were not happy with ye working for us, the state seems to be against it people. Our outpatints appointments are to long, they forget.
If there are protestors and extremist turning up at your home. Should you also question your own actions.

I'm 100% sympathetic to the idea under the buffer zones but I'm quite worried about this being a free speech and free movement infringement.
I don't agree showing up outside politicians homes wearing balaclava's but I think a fair amount of risk needs to be accepted in a new world for politicians.
Free speech is supposed to protect unpopular forms of speech, even ones that people may feel are too far but do not cross the line into direct harassment.
The problem of people not showing up to their appointments is tricky. I agree that people should cop on and set up a reminder to show up before their appointment but at a rate of 10,000 appointments being missed, call it babying if you want, but there's clearly a systemic problem here that needs a systemic solution.
