Penn State is favored to make the CFP. James Franklin has no more excuses. They hired him figuring that if he could coach Vanderbilt to incredible records, he could restore a program Penn State to the top of college football because of being able to recruit much better players. He has some of the best offensive and defensive players in the Big Ten, so it's time for him to win or get fired.

Nebraska did this years ago. They were consistently winning 9 or 10 games but it wasn't good enough so they fired their head coach. Now they win like 5 games a year.

Penn State should be ranked high with a schedule like they have, as where Michigan's schedule is a little more robust from the sleeper they had last year, good to see schedule maker's.

This is a false narrative. Sean Clifford beat Michigan twice. Trace beat Michigan 42-14 and also beat Ohio State.

The problem is that Penn State isn't used to firing head coaches, Joe Paterno was there forever and retired, and Bill Obrien left for the NFL. The truth is, this is Penn State's history, good not great, and they're comfortable with this. It reminds me of pre-Kirby Georgia with Mark Richht, Georgia had to make a tough call to fire a good head coach to get a great head coach because they wanted to go another level. Penn State needs to do the same.
I remember a time when Penn State was in a sticky situation.. players didn't want to play there, NOONE wanted to coach there, people tried to stay away.. but Franklin CHOSE to stay and coach. I'm a SOONERS fan, and certain qualities have to be met. Franklin has great qualities, give that man a little more time.. HE STOOD BY THE SCHOOL, JUST AS THE SCHOOL SHOULD HAVE HIS BACK. 💯

The reality is we have a skewed perception of what success is. James Franklin has a big ten championship and 3 NY6 bowls wins including a rose bowl. Sean Clifford beat Michigan twice. 95% of teams in FBS would be ecstatic with that. Have they had success over Michigan and Ohio State recently? No, but almost no one has. Two things can be true, 1. Michigan and Ohio State are extremely tough to beat, and 2. Penn State has been a tremendous program the last decade.

Joe Pa had an undefeated season in year 3 and 3 undefeated seasons in his first 8 years. Joe pa is not comparable to franklin

Pretty much decided after the regular season and before the bowl games. Jow had teams that were more than enough to win,he just didn't have the right people backing him nationally. He did get a consultation prize, being Coach of the year,but the whole thing still sucks,all these years later. I still think Penn State will hoist THE trophy again, before I excit stage right. The offensive line is becoming a strong point again. Running backs are great. People are pounding on the door to play linebacker. Defensive line is the best ever. Patience,we will get there.

The 0-5 start during the covid season convinced me that with Franklin at the healm, PSU is always in jeopardy of going off the rails completely. This year, the brutal five game stretch will define their season. The opener with WVU is not a gimme game by any means, AT ALL.
Nothing about that season should impact your perception of a coach or a program.
@shawwr89 I respectfully disagree. Yes, it was the covid season-things were in a state of utter chaos, for sure. I acknowledge that; however, they were a preseason top 10 team that year. The loss to Indiana should not have happened. Things snowballed out of control from there. Regardless, 0-5 was the worst start to a season in Penn State history. You have your opinion, and I have mine, but I want to see Penn State win championships, and I have serious doubts that they will get the job done with Franklin. I want him to succeed, and I want Penn State to win championships, but I think they deserve better.

No. Look at Ryan day, 56-8 yet on the hot seat. The pressure isn't as strong at Penn St
I don’t think Michigan and Ohio state are really in the same class in that conversation. Ryan day is working with the resource level that only 3 or 4 other programs in the country have on a consistent basis.
PSU is 12-26 vs ranked teams in the past 10 seasons. In 2012 & 2013 they were under sanctions so we’ll skip those. In the 10 years before sanctions they were 12-27 vs ranked teams.
That means in the past 20 seasons without sanctions they are 24-53 vs ranked teams. They are on par with programs like Auburn. And even that might be disrespectful to Auburn considering Auburn in that same timeframe has a better record vs ranked teams in a better conference, has a championship, and a heisman. PSU should never be mentioned in the same breath as the playoffs.

Penn State fans expecting titles is laughable. Paterno won one early on and y’all have been chasin that for the last 30+ years. You’re a nice upper echelon program but you aren’t a real contender.

1994, 1997, and 1999 were all in the hunt for the natty.
Penn State had 3 seasons early in his tenure where they finished undefeated.
2005 revived the program after a couple of down years.
