Two great video editors that can be used semi professionally on Chromebook without Linux are alight motion and capcut, I can't even describe how useful these mobile video editing apps actually can be if you put them to the test, if you seriously need a video editor on Chromebook I would recommend these two

I have not edited in years and was novice at best. Came here from Reddit because your video was so well done and what you accomplished on a Chromebook was very impressive! Kudos sir

Davinci Resolve utilizes gpu more. It only supports nvidia and AMD (closed driver) under Linux version. You are also using a container inside a VM. So I doubt it won't be easy to run Resolve in default chromeos/Linux setup anytime soon.

Thanks for the info. I didn't have my hopes up trying it out because I knew Resolve is very GPU heavy. But had to try it out just to be thorough.

I think Resolve requires discrete graphics with at least 4 GB VRAM and at least 16 GB RAM just to install. I don't know of any Chromebooks that come close to that. At least that won't break the bank.

Is there any real advantage to buying a chromebook vs a used laptop? You're looking at a potential of a 2-3 generation old i7 (plus MX grade GPU) vs a dinky 2/4 core Atom or Mobile Soc. I gotta say, I love the Android platform as a whole, but I feel like until Chromebooks adopt Ryzen APUs, the consumer is being cheated out of ALOT of performance. Subbed btw.

There are massive advantages to using a Chromebook. Chromebooks are much faster with lower specs. They are much more secure and battery life is phenomenal. Older used laptops are a terrible bargain in my opinion. Especially in covid times. First, prices are higher in covid for used laptops. Secondly, you are buying a laptop with used components. In an age where soldered ram and soldered processors rule, you are taking a big risk. You are also GUARANTEEING that you will need to replace the battery sooner then normal. A 2 year old battery is a big deal.
Consider that the HP Chromebook x360 he had in this video has gone on sale as low as $375 before. It goes on sale frequently to $450.. The build quality is very premium, far above most $450 laptops. The i3 processor will smoke what an i5 can do in windows, mainly because Chrome OS is so lightweight. Chrome OS also works great with Android phones and is very secure.
Why avoid a Chromebook: Exactly what this video shows. If video editing is a really big need, or if you need to use other windows programs, it's best in my opinion just to get a laptop on sale. The Yoga 6 has a processor much faster then an i7, it frequently goes on sale at best buy for $550 or $600. You can get plenty of laptops with i5 processors around $500 to $600, and an 11th gen i5 smokes 10th gen i7s. So buying a 2 year old laptop is silly when you can just get an i5 that is faster. If you need to run windows programs or do big video editing, you will get much better performance on windows. But if video editing is only an occasional task, and you do pretty much everything on the web (or android apps) you will absolutely love a good premium Chromebook
