I simply use the 7x7x6 priority boxes. They are free from USPS and are the perfect size for mugs/cups. With the amount of mugs/cups that I move, cutting and creating a personal box for each one takes too much time. Pop it into the 7x7x6 box already wrapped in bubble wrap and some packing peanuts and its out the door. Your method would eat up way too much time for me.
I just received my 7x7x6 boxes and I agree they are perfect fit to send mugs but I can't figure out what they are categorized under when I'm trying to pre pay for my labels under usps as click and ship ship or pirateship? So I'm on hold trying to figure this out. Hope some can help thanks!!!
Another great video, thank you. I think I currently enjoy shipping days more than Christmas, I can wrap something up I know they want and they pay me. Your experience to your profession shows through. You have brilliant ideas for packing and a wide variety of techniques. I am impressed.
I have never heard anyone complain on pay day. I blame my mother she always got paid on the first of the month and that is when my birthday would fall. LOL
Thank you so much for sharing ☺️ I really appreciate it! I am new to all of it and have been thinking about making some mugs to sell, but really need to learn about the shipping process and costs ❤️ you really helped
We have the same postal scale & measuring tape. I'm fangirling. lol. I agree about not putting breakables in padded flat rate mailer. Oh the newer 6x6x7 boxes are thin material like the shoe box now, you may want to order a small amount to check them out.
In the video you mention how to pride yourself in being efficient in shipping. While this method is cheaper in materials. It is by far not efficient in time which equates to dollars earned and should be directed at those getting started shipping. For a regular shipping / eBay seller, why not just buy the boxes in bulk at a 5x5x5 or 6x6x6. Surely the $0.42/box ($10.43/bundle of 25 on eBay as of 2015-12-14) is worth the savings in time to manufacture a box. It took you roughly 3.5 minutes to modify that box. I will say your average rate is 3 minutes/box which equates to 20 boxes in an hour. That's $8.40/hr in labor. It would take the profit from roughly 2 mugs to cover the cost of 25 boxes and giving you more time back to re-invest into sourcing more product, refining your processes or spending with family.
I use the 7x7x6 priority mail box. I tried using the padded mailer method but when one arrived broken, I decided to spend a couple dollars more instead. Love the electric cutter! Great tip on that : -)
I love that electric cutter! Their are 2 reasons i dont use the 7x7x6 box. First off the cardboard is heavier for that box which makes it weigh more. Secondly, the box is too wide. No mug is even close to 7 inches wide which means you need more packaging material which makes the box heavier still. I would assume most mugs being shipped in the 7x7x6 box would technically be over 1 pound. Since most mugs arent huge money, the 1 pound difference in shipping weight would affect your profits quite abit.

I had no idea that you were aloowed to alter the priority boxes...how have I lived without knowing this? I sell vintage cameras and this would have been great to know before! Thanks!
Toy-Addict if you alter a regular priority mail box are you still restricted to using only priority mail? I had been told if you use a box with priority mail markings you have to ship it priority. I’m just trying to learn
Just wondering why you don't use priority box #4 7x7x6 seems to be about the size your are cutting down to. The only thing I can figure you like the shoe box better since it is a thinner cardboard. I don't sell mugs but I ship a lot of hat in that #4 box.

I have about 50 of them just collecting dust. Seems to me i end up shipping first class, use a flat rate envelope or a regional A. What do u typically ship in the #4 box?
***** I use #4 for snapback hats. Regoinal A are too expensive for those. And yes I do understand that those could be shipped first class with your own box. But it is more easier for me for just use this box and get it to the customer faster and use the free boxes. I just pack the shipping in the price, it is never more than $6 and that is to like Alaska. I have never bought any boxes so I guess that is why I use so many priority boxes. Those shoeboxes work great for diecast cars if you sell any of those.
Little confused why it wouldn’t be easier to get a “priority mail box4” the 7”x7”x6” their smallest priority mail box.. would it cost more than the shoebox one u used in the video?🤔 … this might b a dumb question but I’m new . 🤷🏻♀️ taking notes 📝
i know right? hahaha painful to watch too! omg, in fact i dont even know why watch it hahaha but adding cost to something that could be pack cheaper and as professional, just for the sake of being "professional" (equals fancy, which is COME ON!)
This was much helpful than putting it in a bag or envelope. Do you add the shipping into the price of your merchandise so you can offer 'free shipping'?
I hate the idea of putting the mugs in an envelope. People can say they dont break all they want but I have heard from plenty of others that they in fact will break. And either way it looks awful for the buyer. Any of my items that are being shipped via First Class Mail, Media Mail, or being shipped at a flat rate then I offer free shipping. If I have to go by calculated shipping then I always charge the buyer. The difference between shipping to your neighbor and shipping across country is just to much. You either loose out on alot of people in neighboring states because you are over priced or you lose money when someone on the other side of the country buys your items.
I went to the Post Office today 2/17/2022 and the clerk told me that the 1St Class weight limit was 13 ounces @ about $10.00. Anything over the 13 Ounces costs more. Sure makes it tough for the small business. I thought the government was supporting small businesses.
Put it into a free ebay 6x4x4 box and then into a padded flat rate. $7.33 today's price. Of course that only works with a standard size cup. Larger cups might not fit.
Could you tell please the difference between USPS Parcel Select, USPS Standard Post, and USPS Media Mail? What kind of boxes and envelopes (sizes, weight) I can use for them? Can I use the flat rate priority mail boxes from the expedited services or not for those economy services? Also, if you know about UPS Ground that is standard service, write more. Look forward to hear from you, thanks!
Watching the video I understand how the word Struggleville came into play. If you send out one mug per day this might be OK. If you are shipping out dozens individually wrapped this is WAAAAY too time consuming.
I believe the number 4 box is the one that is 7x7x6. The reason I dont use it is because it weighs more than this method. If your mug is on the border weight wise this is better.
It is now October 2020. Looking at a Priority Mail shoebox. On the bottom flap it says that the packaging "is provided solely for use in sending Priority Mail shipments. Does this mean then that an altered PM shoebox cannot be used to ship First Class any longer?
At 11:22 A packing slip??? Not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate? I'm just an individual shipping a coffee mug. Not a company. Is a 'packing slip' something I need to worry about obtaining?
39thala A packing slip makes you look more professional. It also give information to the buyer of what the item is, what they paid for the item and who they bought it from in case there are any problems. Its also a way to leave a message to the buyer to encourage them to check out your other items or to leave you feedback. The packing slip can be printed from the same screen as your shipping label. When you are at the screen that asks for the weight of the item and how you are shipping it look towards the top and you will see a link to print a packing slip. A new window will open with an edit and print button. If you dont want to change the text you can simply print.
***** Ok, thanks! Is that something I would necessarily need just selling something on ebay? I don't think they give you that option when posting a shipping label do they? I would just be using the option of their shipping label that they provide based on the usual shipping rates for that item instead of trying to price the shipping myself. I guess I could just put a little note inside as you say to encourage them to check out your other items. A little personal touch never hurt I suppose. Another person told me one time that doing adds to success in selling on ebay. Customers appreciate it.
No its the total weight of the item when it gets shipped but that stuff is so light it will never really change anything. Might be an ounce, probably less.
