May I provide a German pronounciation guide?
Margaretha is pronounced Mar-ga-REH-ta. No th sound, just t sound. The a and e as in Polish, I assume.
      Von is fon or fonn.
      Waldeck was fine.
You also pronounced Haube correctly at your first try. It's really pronounced like written. Not Hoibe. ^ ^
So, you finally settled on the correct pronounciation. :)

Important note: The Grimm brothers were not the creators of the stories, they actually traveled around Germany and collected old folk tales. They did this as part of their research on language changes. They were not looking for inspiration or trying to write fairytales, they were simply collecting data by interviewing a lot of people from different spans of life. All of the stories had been told for generations, the Grimm brothers happened to be the ones to write them down.

    Hey, hi, German here ✌🏽
the Goldhaube is actually a very specific cap from lower Bavaria. It’s heavily decorated with gold beads and thread and the women would put hundreds of hours into the making of their individual Goldhaube. They would then be worn at parades and it was a special honour to be part of such a group. My Grandma used to be a Goldhaubenfrau and I always found it fascinating to see the handiwork that goes into a cap.

If it's the same as in my country, the more elaborate, the higher the status of the wearer. Plainer Goldhauben with black as the main color are worn by the younger women here. To me, (not a Goldhaubenfrau ^^), it looks like they add with time until they are mostly fully golden and the stiff upper part (that looks like the tailfeathers of a dove kinda) gets bigger too. same with the chockers around their necks and the decorations on their hems and girdles. When I was younger there was a big conflict among the women in my town because someone tried to modernize the designs as a fashion choice and not as a member of the group and they reacted very aggressively to that. The group is exclusive and not very tolerant of anything not fitting their norms here.

@@QueenDreamers87 plot twist: the only reason the oldest house is from 1885 is bc that's the date colonizers came there and destroyed all the older dwellings and buildings.
But to be fair to OP, colonization shaped the midwest A TON, even most native settlements here in the midwest are a result of dislocation from centuries of land disputes and penultimately the indian removal act (case in point, Choctaw populations mainly settled in what's modern-day Mississippi/Alabama until the 1800s). Being perfectly aware of the fact that people have lived here for thousands of years, there still isn't much physical history to show of it, and what's left is hard to find and disconnected to the people of today because of all the genocide and arbitrary landgrabbing and homesteading that pushed and pulled people around all over the place. Plus, alongside that colonizing our tribes changed a lot too, basically adopting most european building methods or adapting them to suit their means (especially the "five civilized tribes" that includes Choctaw who were pretty early adopters) so most of what survives from our cultures is still the european influence and dates to the same time as well.
Sorry for the long post, I just mean that it really is difficult to find pre-19th century ANYTHING in the midwest that isn't A) an archeological dig site B) literally native-owned, sacred, and/or somewhere you aren't allowed to film or C) converted into a museum.

As a German Literature student, this is my time to shine: The Grimms had women come and tell them stories they came to know throughout their lives. Therefore, the fairytales are not "fictional" in the sense that they were invented by the authors like other fairytales but are based on orally passed on stories. Besides that, the fairytales are written and published in the German Romantic period and medieval stuff was a very popular thing back then. Most of the fairytales are believed to be set during the Middle Ages, so before the 16th and 17th century, actually. I don't know if this is the case for Snow White, though. Most sources are pretty divided about the fairytales origins anyways.
Another thing is that Lucas Cranach was (and still is) a pretty big celebrity in my hometown and I have been bombarded with his work and achievements my whole life. I am experiencing a mix between excitement and childhood trauma right now

Quite right, and from a historical point of view, there is evidence that Snow White in the first written evidence was described with "yellow hair", as far as Eckhart Sanders' Research showed, which fit with Margaretha/Margarthe who was shown as blonde. But it is also a part of touristic marketing for the region of Waldeck as the region of being the background of the Snow White narrative, but there are several else who claim that. Maybe you are familiar with the "Hessenland ist Märchenland" concept, were they tried to tie some local folklore elements in fairy tales to some specific regions in Hessen.

But on a serious note and because I got really angry at one of my professors today: German middle ages and the novels that came out of them are marvellous creations of literature and everybody who tells me otherwise has either no taste at all or doesn’t get the books. They are about knights fighting dragons, yes, but they are also about knightlyhood and the moral aspects of it and create such an interesting and intriguing concept of life as an ideal part of society. They are about friendship and fairness and love. And yes, most of the time they are Crazy and ridiculous but I love them with all of my heart and they taught me more about respectful behaviour than Goethe or Schiller together.

When one person, by themselves, tries to make this stuff, that's insane. XD There would have been one woman whose whole life was just making the undergarments for everyone, another who just beaded the crap out of stuff, etc. etc. Everyone had a place and a speciality so that not everyone had to know every aspect of the whole outfit perfectly. I love your rendition of this iconic dress.
I've made two Disney-esque Snow White dresses forty years apart--one for my young daughter and then my granddaughter--from commercial patterns. The first time, the pattern had real slits and poofs for the sleeves, The more recent one had fake slit pieces applied with fusible webbing.
I'm absolutely making a haube to wear with my early 18th century dressing gown.

    • @Widdekuu91
      @Widdekuu91 Před rokem +8

I have such a good idea (I know I'm bragging) for a life action movie for Snowwhite.
Someone said it would be an idea to have her be an Albino. Now, I love that idea to begin with.
Then I thought, what if you make Snowwhite write to the prince, loveletters, for years on end, as they used to do and the prince is writing her back, but leaving out one detail, namely that he is black. And not just black, but really pitchblack, like close to hyperpigmentation.
His people/civilians don't know and have only seen his father and mother, who are mixed and his paintings are edited, to make the people believe that he is lighter-skinned. He is afraid how people will judge him.
Here's the thing... Snowwhite is blind. She does not see beauty like others do, neither does she care for skincolours or whatever. She doesn't even know she is different from others and her mother tells her she is pale, but in an ugly way. She believes this, but says she does not care and likes herself despite it all. (Obviously she does feel miserable about being told she is ugly and the mother keeps encouraging her to never leave the forest surrounding the castle or talk to others, as her complexion will likely shock them. She's basically telling her that she can't trust anyone, a bit like Rapunzel or whatshisname with Quasimodo.)
One day, she is brought to the forest by the huntsman, but escapes and is now stuck there.
A servant, that usually helps write her letters, feels compelled to send one to the prince, informing him that, regretabbly, the princess has gone missing.
Snowwhite can't find her way initially, but listens and 'talks' to the animals to guide her.
A loudly screeching bird, for example, would mean that there is a predator nearby. After a while, she hears human voices and walks over to a meadow with some mountains and a house nearby, where meets the miners.
Not only are the miners _also_ minors (children) but also people with limb-problems, the usual deformed men that have not seen enough sunlight.
She takes care of their house and food and incorporates better ingredients in the food, so their vitamin-C-Deficiency is gone, hence the reason everyone feels better and healthier and happier when she is around.
The Queen comes over and tries her usual. The corset, the comb and the apple. That last one, does the trick.
The prince has heard that Snowwhite was in danger has been taken away, which makes him decide to look for her. He is wearing a knight's armor and steps into a carriage and makes a servant wave for him, showing a brown-ish hand to the public and not his own. He spends the whole trip hiding away, wanting to help, but terrified of what the public might do if they spot him.
Once Snowwhite is in her glass coffin, and the prince finds her, he finally takes off his helmet, shows the world his face and he's crying. He begs for the miners to gift her to him, so that she can be put in his father's castle, in the burial-side that they have there. They agree it is safer there, and help him load the casket on the carriage.
That's when the witch shows up, the Queen, who attempts to rob Snowwhite back (she's seen that there is still life in her and wants to end that life nów) and she bewitches and pesters the horses in front of the carriages. Two break loose and the carriage is pulled forward, the casket falls down and shatters into a thousand pieces (dramatically done with Snowwhite slow-mo-floating in the air, surrounded by glittering, sharp glass.)
Snowwhite is thrown on the floor by the impact, covered in small cuts, but seemingly okay. She wakes up slowly, the miners help her to realise what's going on, while her prince jumps on a massive Frysian horse (google them, they are amazing) and gallops after the Queen.
She either gets stabbed or Snowwhite does something...I'm not sure yet. I don't know, I don't like the whole 'Snowwhite happens to be a sword-fighter' idea that Kristen Stewart's movie had, but she can't just sit on the ground in shards of glass either.
Either way, they defeat the queen, reunite recognise eachother from the letters and kiss. There will be symbolic animals reuniting too, a black and a white swan swimming in the lake behind them, showing that nature has black and white animals and both are welcome in this world.
