So I just listened to your umbrage over the thieves not wanting your shoes and it made me think of my something similar that happened to my father almost 30 years ago. His business was broken into, as were all the other businesses in the complex. When he arrived in the middle of the night to see what was taken, he found his electric computer and other electronics piled year the door. They went to the trouble to consider taking the stuff then said, yeah, so not worth it. Nothing ended up being taken and my father was actually a bit offended.
Possibly worse: maybe one is aware enough to know what they're doing could leave someone exposed to the elements. "Could be cold tonight, leave the sweater."
It's crazy how we sometime feel obligated to justify ourselves. You were robbed, your car was closed. You're not stupid for packing the way you do. It just sucks sometimes
This is 100% my thoughts. Even if the car had been sitting open with neon arrows pointing to the luggage, it was still the fault of those who chose to steal.
As a Roman, my guess is that it was done by someone living nearby with contacts with people selling stolen stuff in Porta Portese market (which is the local flea market, and the biggest of its kind in Rome). They saw you park the car from their windows/ balcony and observed you coming and going for a couple of days to get a feeling for your habits/ timetables. You can sell pretty much anything in Porta Portese, and it's common knowledge that some of the merchandise isn't acquired through exactly legal means. My suggestion for future trips would be to frequently change your car's parking spot, and to try as much as possible to only open the trunk when no one can see you.
oh boy. i don't live in italy but this makes me paranoid of going to a flea market and (unknowingly) buying something that was stolen from someone else. 😅
If you live there you could go and take a look, take photos of the vintage clothes at the flea market to show Karolina and maybe even recover the stolen ones.
@@shylockwesker5530 I would, but the market is HUGE. It takes at least half an hour to walk by every stand, and that's if you're just glancing at the items displayed. Also, most clothes sellers have them thrown in messy piles over large tables, so they aren't exactly easy to see without combing through the mess. If some of Karolina's stolen dress had flashy patterns or colors and I had reference pictures I could try, but without that it's like looking for a stranger in a crowd.
Oh wow. I'm so incredibly sorry for your loss. They didn't just steal your beautiful clothes, they stole hours of work, planning and effort. I'm so sorry.
I'm Italian and I live in Rome, quite near the neighborhood you got robbed at... and first of all, let me say that I'm MORTIFIED about what happened 😢💔 Rome is not my hometown but I love this place and it's so frustrating to hear this 😢😢😢 I suspect they're gonna re-sell everything in Porta Portese, this huge market that they have on Sundays. I could look out for some of your stuff next time I go there 🥹
Little update: I've been to the market in question, but I've found nothing 🥹 At one point I thought I had spotted her lacey white skirt but it was a dress 😔 ~An ugly dress at that 👹~ It's unlikely I'll find anything cos the weather is getting chillier and they started swapping summer clothes for warmer ones 🥹🥹 I'll keep looking tho!

a friend got his backpack stolen, he stalked the robbers, got it back and most of his important things were with him: documents, money, etc. What was actually stolen? His costumes bc he's a theater kid and a bag of fake money for theplay he was starring at. The robbers were so incompetent they couldn't even find the real money in the goddamn backpack
As a romanian with paranoid parents, they always taught me as a child to NEVER EVER leave stuff in the car especially on vacation. To this day, I dont even leave a bag or box in the back of my car even in my own condo parking where the risk is extremely low. One of my parents' friends even got stolen from her car while she was at a RED LIGHT and didnt lock the doors of her car.
WOW! At a red light!! When I moved from Florida (Miami) to NYC - I learned NYC is not an environment to leave ANYTHING in your car. Many car owner's even taped notes in the back windows - saying: "Please don't bother breaking the window - everything in the car is as empty as you see here." - My not new car happen to come automatically with an expensive radio (it was used - but there was the radio.) I replaced it a few times with the same radio until a police officer I reported it to was kind enough to tell me "These are professionals. They are looking for that brand of radio. So they go through your front light in a way that doesn't set off the alarm - and shut off (something?) that shuts off the alarm - and then just sit in the car - and nice and neatly slide out your fancy radio - probably takes them two minutes and then they are calmly walking away. After that I a) didn't report it to my ever increasing insurance and b) just got a cheapo radio brand put in by my very nice Brooklyn mechanic.
I’m sorry you had this happen. I’ll share what the police officer said to me when I was beating myself up for not securing my purse that got stolen, “it’s not your fault someone took it. That was their choice.” I always appreciated that sentiment. Take your time rebuilding your wardrobe. I’m sure you will have good ideas of what will work for you.
When someone stole from our property the police said with confidence that they would get them. If you think about it, they will eventually get caught and spend time in jail even if it isn't over your particular loss. If that doesn't happen there is always h.e.l.l. for the scoundrels.
My ex stole everything I owned since it was temporarily in storage. It’s been 20 years and I’m still upset by it. I’m so sorry this happened to you all.
I had a really terrible loss of things in storage which actually is still a pending legal issue years later. It’s stomach-rinsing. At least once a day a memory of something I had but lost washes over me. Fortunately, I’m Traditional Roman Catholic so I can claim the pain as penance so I figure I’m getting straight into Heaven, no Purgatory required. 🥴😵💫😜
They took one look at your clothing selections and just assumed you must have had expensive taste and probably some fine jewelry tucked away. Sad they actually got your priceless hand made wardrobe. Mean people suck!
Lol this is not envy, Karolina's wardrobe was probably all sold out at the black market the next sunday. It takes place literally in the district she was staying in, and her clothes were probably the peek of the weekly sold😅
Unfortunately thieves don't tend to target "wealthy" people because they are more difficult to steal from given the sophisticated alarm systems on the cars that now even have cameras, tracking devices, and the likelihood that police will take that robbery much more seriously if it happens to someone super rich. They purposefully target low to middle income people, who of course it actually harms the most. I'm really sorry for you, that's so frustrating and you worked so hard to accumulate quality pieces and for the stress to you and your family.
You don't think she is wealthy? I certainly do! I am very sorry to hear this happened to Karolina and her family but some of her takes in this video show that not only is she quite comfortable financially, I don't truly think she values money or her belongings. Many people would not be able to bounce back from a theft like this or afford to replace anything afterwards. While no one deserves to get robbed it is always, ALWAYS a bad idea to leave any items unattended. Finally, people really need to stop travelling if they don't have the time and decency to learn at least some basic language skills of their host country. I'm sorry but this whole video was very first world problems and I don't think lessons have been learned.😬

Not to mention that you probably aren't going to learn perfect pronunciation in the month or two leading to your trip, and the police officers probably aren't used to hearing every single touristy accent ever.

Our camera got stolen on our honeymoon and we lost all of the photos. I don't give a rat's ass about that camera, 21 years later it's obsolete and probably in a landfill now. I WISH I had those photos though. It sucks that this happened, the sentimental value and the memories of Carolina's vintage wardrobe is incalcuable to her. I hope those thieves steal someone's bag that is full of poisonous snakes...When I was in college my car was broken into and the theives went through my cassette tapes and left all the bob dylan and I was so fricking mad on bob dylan's behalf...
My parent's home was broken into during their honeymoon, and my dad swears it was the person who sold him their mattress (the only person they told). At least my mom had hidden her jewelry, but my dad lost a bunch of digitized journals and it's sad to think they were wiped and sold
I moved to Europe and shipped several boxes. Included in these boxes was the majority of my books and clothes. A lot of those clothes were vintage and had belonged to my mom while she was living and studying in Europe. Somewhere between California and Germany half of my shipment was stolen, so I lost all the clothes and the vast majority of books. Including my baby photo album. I was sick over it for a couple years. Oddly they took my cardboard boxes, not the vintage steamer trunks full of art supplies and vintage cameras 🤷🏾♀️
I started wearing vintage clothes in the 80s and they were so cheap then. No one wanted them and people thought I was crazy, but I loved them. The thing with vintage clothes is they can't be replaced and that's sick that someone has stolen yours.
I had my house broken into. I was away on a work trip and they must have known they had plenty of time. They tossed every drawer in my house. It felt so violating! They stole so many things that were sentimental but the one thing I've never gotten over is they took my mom's 1951 classic Singer sewing machine that I learned to sew on and she had given to me to sew curtains for my home. I loved that thing and it held so many memories with my mom. I'm so sorry you lost such personal items. People say it's just stuff and replaceable. I can tell you not everything IS replaceable. 😢
I’m so sorry for your hurt. I get it for sure! Many years ago, I was moving house from Germany back to the US. I went back and forth between air freight and ship, with air freight I would’ve had to hire a second company to move my belongings from JFK to my home in NJ. The ship harbor was closer to my home and grind transport was included. I arrived and my belongings were supposed to arrive a week or two later. But I heard nothing. Turns out there had been a “storm of the century” at sea. And in those cases, they will let cargo go to save the vessel. They didn’t contact me but my partner in Germany. So notification took longer. I lost not only an antique treadle sewing machine but an antique heirloom porcelain Victorian doll, numerous pieces of vintage and antique jewelry from my long departed grandmother, along with all my clothes and many valuable items, and just all my household possessions-basically my life history. I was devastated. It was such a psychological and emotional blow. And I mourned for a long time. I did receive an insurance check but that could never replace the sentimental and valuable heirloom items.
I wrote a fanfiction series that got mildly popular, and one of the readers bound books for a hobby. So you can imagine I was ecstatic when she offered to bind my fanfic as a novel and send it to me! She sent me photos as she was making it, it was beautiful, and as an aspiring novelist the idea of having my own writing as a book meant so much. Well, she ended up shipping it to me on a weekend when I was out of town, and by the time I came home, the package was gone from my doorstep. Someone had taken it. Despite searching, putting up flyers, even filing a report, I never reclaimed it, and it turned out later that there was an organized package thieving ring going on in our apartment complex. That book was a one-of-a-kind passion project, and it probably got tossed into a dumpster once the thief realized it didn't have resale value 🥲
This also happened to my family in Rome :(( We just stopped by the beach for like half an hour on the way to the airport. They stole all our passports, a camera and my mother's favorite jeans jacket (she is still mad about that). But the worst was they took my 5 year old sister's bag with her favorite teddy bear in it. She cried and cried and cried all the way to the embassy to get emergency passports and on the plane home and was sad for many weeks after. And it was probably just thrown away :(
Hello, Italian here. A few summers ago, on the morning of my departure for my roadtrip, my car was stolen in front of my house. The thing I noticed that is extremely similar to your experience is the late evening visit to pick up or leave something in the car. In my case I had left a handful of things of no economic value in the trunk the night before the event. I believe that this behavior may have attracted the bad guys in both cases, it is possible that they checked where we were returning and therefore they could have taken it calmly and committed the crime. I understand your feelings about what you lost: in my car there was my collection of CDs (all not original but lovingly put together over the years), two beach towels that I was very fond of and above all a bag of fabric that my mother had made for me and that I have never been able to use. She is no longer able to sew another one and the thought that an object of such great sentimental value to me could have ended up in a dumpster still makes me feel sick. I'm so sorry for your loss.
The reason why they probably didn’t take the camera was because of the serial numbers. A friend of mine got his nintendo switch stolen and he later found it in a pawn shop and was able to trace the thief by the serial number and the thief’s credentials at the pawn shop. A big LOL
I wish that had happened with my sister's special edition Nindendo 3DS, because I even checked so many pawn shops in my city... I guess the asshole kid still has it. I do hope they step on a lego. Every single day.
My mom and I moved from Arizona to Ohio and the movers stole EVERYTHING. All we had left was our animals, a few photo albums, a few clothes, some important papers... everything else is gone, from sentimental to irreplaceable to practical. We went from trying to enjoy our "fresh start" to being angry at our loss with nobody caring or helping.

As a mystery writer, I feel like a plot twist would be that the guy who seemed suspicious but then was friendly to you in Polish was actually the thief, and that's why he took the Polish novels... Unfortunately writing mystery plots does not help me solve real life crimes! Really sorry this happened and hope you can soon find some new favourite items if the others are never found. ❤️
We moved to Wroclaw and on top of adjusting to a new home, my husband's vintage analogue camera was stolen within the first month of living here. Of course one would feel angry about the monetary and emotional value, but the feeling that bothered me the most was just not feeling like I can't trust ANYONE. It's traumatising in it's own weird way. And people will say "oh well you can always replace things" but people fail to realise how your trust in humanity is just shattered immediately afterwards.
I feel you. I was mugged on my street 12 years ago, and since then I no longer feel safe anywhere in public, especially knowing that culprits were never caught and I might pass them on the street not knowing who they are.
My ex's digital camera was taken by a friend of a friend. I will never be sure how many pics of our young kids were lost with those memory cards. Been 12 years, will never forgive him. He had stuff stolen more than anyone I have ever known.
I got my flat broken into after just half a year of living in a really beautiful albeit expensive flat, according to the police I was actually observed and targeted even though I was poor AF back then and had nothing. I was so traumatized I couldn't stay there and moved a couple of months later. And they didn't even take much, just some cheap jewelry that was worth less than what I had to pay for the door they destroyed.
I've always been like that (though nothing has ever been stolen from me). However, the fantastic clothes that haven't fit me for decades i still have and wish I'd travelled with them when they did fit.
I actually have a trip planned and this inspired me to take my second choice clothes and items rather than the first choice one. still nice clothes but less painful if stolen or lost.
I'm so sorry for this! And also I can feel you: me and my friend got robbed this summer in Milan. Thieves broke into the apartment through the open window (it was hot) while we were sleeping between 3 and 6 a.m. took our phones, credit card, and an expensive camera. We didn't even wake up! They left the handprints in the apartment, too. The funniest part is that we even tracked the thieves ourselves but the police did literally nothing. 🤡

It could happen everywhere, especially when you have so many tourists there! And (without dismissing all the economical/political issued that Italy faces) it's still such a beautiful place with amazing culture (my cousin is absolutely in love with Italy, especially the Salento region, learned to speak the language perfectly and recently bought a cheap trullo down there. I was lucky to be able to visit her last month. It was stunning and she has the best neighbours originally from Veneto!). So don't feel bad! Everywhere has bad sides and good sides!

I have a small business, and in my research trying to figure out which countries are safe to ship to, most people don't even *ship* to Italy because mail theft is so bad. I've been friends with people who live there, they say it's really bad too. Big shame, it's a beautiful country

My dad being Italian and us living in Switzerland, it was a really big deal when we went in holidays with our very nice car with Swiss license plate. So it's kind of ingrained in my brain to never leave the car in a shady spot, never leave anything in the car, never trust anyone and always expect to be robbed so keep eveything important on yourself. Oh girl no 😭 you have been EXTREMELY lucky if this has never happened before. First rule of parking is to NEVER leave anything visible in a parked car! My (italian) family taught this to me when I was little and even though I live in a small town I always do this. Rome in particular is huge and you need to be extra careful :(
Maybe she lives in a safe area and never had to worry about this? I one time was donating some old clothes to my local goodwill shop. I tried to find a bag to put them in and only had a large bag from a high end store to put them in. Left them in my car to go shopping. Someone stole the bag out of my car. LOL. They got a bunch of used clothes in a department store bag.
@@druidriley3163 My parents were unloading at a hotel (before they had me). They grabbed the valuable stuff and the suitcases and went inside. By the time they got back outside, someone had broken in and stole my mother's makeup bag. I hope the thieves really enjoyed their used makeup LOL.
As a larger plus size person, one of my biggest fears is having my luggage stolen or lost. I ALWAYS pack 1-2 outfits in a carry-on or bag that stays with me because I know I'm not finding clothes that even fit my body in a country where I don't speak the language.
The worst thing about being robbed - of anything - is the sense of violation. I also know that feeling of obsessing over the dumbest little thing lost, just because it had sentimental value, or was something I had made, or was given to me by a dear friend. Honestly, one of the worst things about being robbed is how violating it feels. It makes my skin crawl when I think about those creeps rifling through my private space. It isn't that my things are worth very much, it's just that they're MINE!!!!
A delivery driver stole an ashtray from my porch. It wasn't valuable. But I really just...liked it. It was one of those big hotel ashtrays, like the size of R2D2, lol. That was like 10 years ago and I still think about it.
One time my family's van was broken into, they stole our cassette collection & a mini TV & then just threw the cassettes into the dumpster nearby. We contacted the cops who barely made a report because they were "busy" with accidents because it snowed in a place that snows every year. (The dusting of snow qas how we found the cassettes as their were footprints to the dumpster from the van.)
I used to live in a midsized US city. I was going on a long weekend trip. I had a bag of just clothes in my car. During one of my university classes someone forced open the drivers door and stole it. I went to campus security they said they can’t pull the camera footage for something like that. I went to the police and they could care less. The officer literally asked me why was I so upset about just clothes and if I had drugs in my bag. I was so disgusted.
The problem is never normally just the thieves. The problem is it’s allowed to happen. That’s why so many people will tell you they went to the police and they at best couldn’t care, at worst insulted or blamed them. It will be some kind of local or government corruption going on guaranteed. The items stolen are usually in places that would be secure (hotel, locker, car etc)
you should have pushed further and called more cops, the act of breaking and entering is serious and a crime, for me the cops care and if there was camera footage they wanted it and took it seriously
Being robbed is so violating. I wish the cops took it more seriously. Not only would you feel better, but if thieves knew there was a chance they'd get into trouble, you might see a reduction in theft. I've always thought we should add charges to b&e's that adds time for emotional damage. Also, I've never understood why people go into law enforcement if they don't want to...enforce the law?
Don't think So. They'll check it one more time and probably throw it away. You can find clothes and open suitcases on the side of the roads all over Italy and Spain.

I completely agree on the feeling of knowing that someone you don't know touched your stuff. Our house was robbed one summer and the thieves left all of our clothes in piles all around the bedrooms (they were probably looking for hidden money or sth). As soon as the police left, we started to wash EVERYTHING because we felt so disgusted
This happened to us in France while also on a camping road trip. We were in a rush and left only a couple of things at the campsite and drove to the city to go for dinner with a friend we hadn't seen in 10 years. Came back to the car an hour and a half later and the window was smashed and all our stuff scattered all over the car and the floor of the street. I know exactly what you mean about feeling "gross" about the stuff they touched. They had gone through my makeup bag and thrown it on the floor, gone through all my clothes. They also stole some super random stuff! Like they took an 8 year old laptop and my passport but they left jewelry?! They also took two pairs of Birkenstocks. Now let me tell you: THOSE SHOES WERE NASTY. They were old af and we had worn them to the beach so they had salt water stains all over. However, they left quite pricey leather shoes?? They also took a random pair of Decathlon sunglasses that probably cost 10 euros...My conclusion is that what they take is a mix of stuff for resale but also stuff they just like for themselves/their family.
The fast fashion horror experience is so interesting because as a tall curvy/midsize woman I still blamed myself a little for not fitting in those types of clothes. ''They are made for tall and slender people''. But Karolina's experience (the supposed ideal body for those brands) proves that they are just badly patterned and cut, anyway lol
Yes! I love the look of one piece swimsuits, but I always have the same experience as Karolina. And I'm not even tall, or that skinny! I think I'm as average as it gets, I'm about 170cm tall and about 60kg. That drawing she made reminds me so much of every experience I had trying to buy a swimsuit.
Yeah it was really relieving to hear- I tend to be pear shaped, so it's SO hard to find pants that fit. Knowing she had issues too made me feel so much better.
Absolutely. I always have to remind myself and my friend about it because it's so insane that clothing brands are so big and assumedly with a lot of money, but they're all awful at design. Sizing up a shirt? One would think they would pattern it proportionally to fit a larger body. Nope. Just make the body part *wider.* Should they make the sleeves larger or the torso longer? Absolutely not, if someone's bigger the shirts are just stretched out horizontally. It's ridiculous and unflattering on everyone.
Oh, I can ensure you're actually right. I'm 180cm / 65kg and somehow ALL clothes seems tiny on me, like, fast fashion made me wish more than once that I could be 15cm smaller to be okay (no joke, i usually thinks abt it very often) And ofc they're doing their best incentive to sew our own things =)
I've heard this theory from a teenager: those cloaths are meant not to fit anyone. People will buy them and soon realize there is no chance to make them look good on them. In the outcome those people will go shopping again in the hope they will find better cloaths. Rinse&repeat
You really shouldn't have to justifiy yourself (meaning your familiarity with camping, the area, etc.) for getting robbed, it's not your fault, it shouldn't happen under any circumstances. Sorry to hear that!
There's no other kind of human being I despise more than a swindler. I've had things stolen too and it puts unmentionable thoughts in my head. I'm glad you're able to look on the bright side of things.
I'm so sorry this happened to you! I was robbed the exact same way in Prague in 2005. All of my best clothes were gone, and it was just a few days before I started high school! 😭Lesson learned the hard way, never, ever, ever, leave your luggage in the car.

Ouch, I feel your pain. Many years ago, I had a suitcase full of all my Renn Fair garb stolen out of the back of my car. When I got ready to leave and realized that everything was gone, I was DEVASTATED. This was not Party City clothes, these were all things that I had hand sewn, embroidered, beaded, and sweated over for years. Also, there were about $1000 worth of custom made corsets in there. I'm still bitter.
I'd still be salty about it, too. It's even worse when they're all one-of-a-kind items, and it feels like they would be easily recognizable if you saw them again. I had a bunch of vintage/custom jewelry stolen a few years ago and if I ever see anyone wearing my 'set' they're going to have their eyes raked out.

Karolina, I get the confusion over the thieves' choices. My parents house was robbed Christmas night many years ago, when we were all staying there but out visiting other people. They took the most random shit and left valuable items. "I hope they step on Legos" is now my favourite curse 😂
The sad part is they probably don’t know where to sell those vintage pieces and they probably dumped them in the garbage. Hopefully they didn’t extract any personal info from the laptop. Sorry that happened to you and your family.

I'm German and had to deal with the police here twice - once, because my letterbox got broken into and my new bank card stolen, resulting in a 500€ theft. The other time, my handbag with wallet, keys, phone etc was stolen when out and about in the city. Both times, the treatment I got was atrocious. They couldn't have been less interested or motivated. Or sympathetic for that matter. In the police station after the handbag theft, they even refused to try and contact my brother, who lives the next town over and has my emergency keys. I had to go there by bicycle (took me about an hour, but what else was I gonna do without a phone or money on me). So yeah. Not necessarily just a problem in Italy 🫤
@@raraavis7782 I'm so sorry to hear that. I can only speak of my own experiences, but I'm sure it's a problem pretty much everywhere. Our family lawyer disappeared with all our documents and some money and the police said they couldn't do anything about it. So that's their fixed response for anything, even about more serious things. We have a HUGE problem with what we call "femminicidio", women who lose their lives to their partners even after they report it to the authorities. The response is always the same, meaning that until the crime occurs they can't do anything. I wonder what we are paying them for 🙃

I felt the same way when my vehicle got broken into years back. They took my backpack with all of my beautiful regency clothes. Which either I had made or had saved up and purchased for $$$. Then they took my car stereo... but left my iPod and my skateboard...? I had been so tired the night before from our recency ball performance that I didn't bring stuff inside and it was all gone by the morning. Ever since then, I don't leave anything in a car that I don't mind if it gets stolen. It's so creepy and unnerving after a robbery. I'm sorry this has happened to you as well. These thieves at least have good taste in clothes lol
For future videos, maybe you could talk about the "logic" of how to strategically build up a wardrobe now, given your years of experience versus what you thought you needed to do as a noob. When I got into Japanese Lolita Fashion I had this perception of how one was suppose to build their wardrobe, or how others thought you should but then once I had already been in it for a while I realized, looking back, I would have given my younger-self completely different advice. Basically, having lots of time/experience made me realize looking back how you would very strategically / deliberately go straight for the most important key elements that in the end make the most direct impact and that those items are really particular and often subtle on their own.

A few vanlifers I follow have mentioned that if you park or get an AnB in some charming little side neighborhood in Italy, you're a target for robbery. Literally 'asking for it's. The people there know it's a AnB, they watch it. They know a van with solor panels is bound to be tourists with money and tech. It's becoming a very sad world. The beautiful pale blue bathing suit! 😭 But on the bright side, more reasons to sew. Your poor Dad, give him a hug from a stranger on line, who thinks he's done a wonderful job raising you!
Yeah. I have a small, diy Van and I'm super paranoid about that kind of thing. Especially since I'm traveling alone. I made sure, that my vehicle just looks like a nondescript delivery/handyman vehicle from the outside. Although I've been told, that these get broken in as well, because people look for expensive tools. Sighs. But, of course, that is not an option, if you want solar panels or stuff. I do make sure, to never park in touristy spots, though.
After very much agonizing, we went with a portable power box, an inverter, an alternator connection switch, and a suitcase solar panel. It doubles as a windshield sun shade, because our windows arent tinted. But ages ago, my self made wedding dress was boxed up in our garage and someone got in and stole our motorcycle helmets and my wedding dress! Nothing else, despite hubby's rolling tool chest! We had a quicky court wedding with one lousy Polaroid my mom took of us, and we were planning on an eventual anniversary fancy wedding (Vegas, Elvis impersonator 🤣) and I hope who ever wore/wears my dress is cursed to this day with boils and disfigurement! (And the same for Karolina's sky blue bathing suit. Perhaps she can get a custom repro made from photos? 😭

It's just so cruel, especially if the item isn't all that valuable in terms of its resale worth. What you gain from it just isn't worth the pain you're causing. Safe travels!
One thing my mom taught me is: DO NOT LEAVE VISIBLE ITEMS IN THE CAR! She always reminds me, even though we live in Florence, where these kinds of things are quite rare. And always remember that, as a tourist, you are way more vulnerable. If you're traveling with a car with a foreign number plate, either empty it or get a garage for the night. EDIT: Let's be clear, I'm not blaming Karolina or her family.
It is always so sad loosing sentimental items! I can't remember being robbed of any sentimental items, but I do have a tendency to loose stuff when I am on holiday or out hiking, and the absolute dread when you realize it is gone is so overwhelming

Yes! I read many cases about the horrible pickpocketing and theft problems in Rome! I really want to visit Rome and other places in Italy but the rampant thievery makes me nervous.

The only time in my almost 40-year-old life I've been robbed was in Rome, they stole my backpack from under my chair in a street restaurant - I had looped the strap around my ankle to prevent it being stolen so I can only assume they cut through the strap! I was robbed while in university. They stole all of my cash and a really useful pair of boots :( the worst part was definitely the feeling of mistrust and anxiety.
This happened to my mother. It was the 80s, and she lived in a student lodgings with other girls. A roommate was the one doing the robbery, and she stole from the other girls, too. My mother caught the roommate's friend with one of her stolen shirts (they had been so dumb that they wore the stolen items at the university), and made her take it off in front of everyone. The shirt was gifted to her by a friend from Mexico, so it was very unique and recognizable. She got some stuff back ( the university's security actually did their job), but not all of it.
Most of my clothes are thrifted or gifted by people, and I struggle a lot to find my size in normal shops. As you say, the sizes are very strange. Damn, that sucks that they stole that from you!!! I would be very upset because when you take your time to make a personalised wardrobe, it really feels like your little treasure, that you cannot replace that easily.
Really sorry this happened to you. Being the victim of theft feels awful. I had my expensive university textbook stolen in a packed university tutorial when I briefly went up to the front of the room. The book had been open on my desk and when I came back it was gone. I was in disbelief and felt awful knowing that one of the people around me must have done it, but I had no proof and couldn't make everyone open their bags to check.
Who ever it was,, it will be something they can never wear, your clothing is iconic and very easy to place and remember. Give it time,, our community is not insurmountably large, some one will eventually draw your eye on the interweb to something that may be yours. I hope you find the items you love the most again.
I am so sorry this happened to you, but Rome can be really tricky. As an Italian I was trained not to leave anything visible in the car because people will break in to take anything of value or not, but also the police experience is very typically ridiculous.
A few years ago, I was working as a teacher, and a small group of students stole candy out of my desk. The value was probably between $5-10, and it was candy meant as rewards for students, so it wasn’t like I was planning to eat it. However, the feeling of being stolen from and having my trust damaged hurt terribly. I’m sorry to hear your family went through that and lost irreplaceable items.
So im also Polish and this video reminded me of an incident that happened to me also in Rome. We were also not In the city centre, because it was a last minute trip and our car and another car with Polish rejestration plates had broken windows, those were the only Polish cars in the area and also the only ones with broken windows, nothing was stolen but we had to go the rest of the trip with a trash bag with ducktape covering the window. Obviously it was a pain to replace my driver's license and my phone, but I was so sad to lose my swimsuit that fit me really well. My bro lives in Las Vegas and he has literally had his car stolen and recovered three times. He finally sold the old junker for a car that has better security features. It's so common there for cars to be stolen for just a drop off or whatever and then abandoned with nothing taken. Sometimes he gets the car back with extra weird stuff in it!
Maybe it's because car theft is so common in my country, but I did cringe at the idea of leaving your luggage in the car trunk. Then again, we don't even trust hotels in my family. Dear Karolina, former New Yorker here. Pro-tip: Never leave anything visible in a car that you don't want stolen. Solutions for the future. If your car has tinted back windows, then, and I realize I'm going up against family tradition here, so take this with truffle flavored salt flakes, but do not pile things higher than the bottom of the window. Then bring a very dark textured piece of fabric, blanket, and when you leave the car cover everything with it. That creates the illusion that there is nothing in the car. The tinted glass hides every thing that is dark. Light colors stand out. But black hides the stuff. Try it sometime. In other words, especially in the Southern Mediterranean area (Italy, Spain, Southern France, Greece), where thievery and pick-pocketing are more common, make sure you are not tempting the thieves. Also if your car was parked in a zone where people are sitting around, be careful of advertising what's in your trunk. My NYC brain would have immediately noted sketchy men sitting around and I would not have spent time opening the trunk in front of them. I would have brought everything valuable upstairs. Never leave anything you would regret being stolen. Car thieves are skilled. Now Karolina being part-Polish myself I fully realize that there is an old Polish tradition that says no one can tell anyone else what to do. Each Pole reinvents the wheel, or, in your case, makes their own wardrobe. So I am sure you will not follow my advice, you will have to invent your own methods. But if you take one thing from this it's simply this: Never leave anything in the car that you would regret being stolen. Period. And thanks for the video and the sense of humor!
Everybody knows that you shouldn't leave things visible in the car. It's common sense. But in the last 10 years Poland had become safe enough that a lot of the time you just automatically go "eh, it will be fine", because people don't remember anything like that happening to them or people they know. You start feeling like you're paranoid when thinking too much about getting robbed, because it seems so unlikely.

I left my apartment building today for two hours and didn't even lock my door.There's a lock on the building entrance and a code to get in. But I only do that when I stay in the local area. So I just listened to your umbrage over the thieves not wanting your shoes and it made me think of my something similar that happened to my father almost 30 years ago. His business was broken into, as were all the other businesses in the complex. When he arrived in the middle of the night to see what was taken, he found his electric computer and other electronics piled year the door. They went to the trouble to consider taking the stuff then said, yeah, so not worth it. Nothing ended up being taken and my father was actually a bit offended.

As a Roman, my guess is that it was done by someone living nearby with contacts with people selling stolen stuff in Porta Portese market (which is the local flea market, and the biggest of its kind in Rome). They saw you park the car from their windows/ balcony and observed you coming and going for a couple of days to get a feeling for your habits/ timetables.
You can sell pretty much anything in Porta Portese, and it's common knowledge that some of the merchandise isn't acquired through exactly legal means. My suggestion for future trips would be to frequently change your car's parking spot, and to try as much as possible to only open the trunk when no one can see you.
This is the first explanation of the motive that makes sense.

If you live there you could go and take a look, take photos of the vintage clothes at the flea market to show Karolina and maybe even recover the stolen ones.
@@shylockwesker5530 I would, but the market is HUGE. It takes at least half an hour to walk by every stand, and that's if you're just glancing at the items displayed. Also, most clothes sellers have them thrown in messy piles over large tables, so they aren't exactly easy to see without combing through the mess. If some of Karolina's stolen dress had flashy patterns or colors and I had reference pictures I could try, but without that it's like looking for a stranger in a crowd.

As a romanian with paranoid parents, they always taught me as a child to NEVER EVER leave stuff in the car especially on vacation. To this day, I dont even leave a bag or box in the back of my car even in my own condo parking where the risk is extremely low. One of my parents' friends even got stolen from her car while she was at a RED LIGHT and didnt lock the doors of her car.

WOW! At a red light!! When I moved from Florida (Miami) to NYC - I learned NYC is not an environment to leave ANYTHING in your car. Many car owner's even taped notes in the back windows - saying: "Please don't bother breaking the window - everything in the car is as empty as you see here." - My not new car happen to come automatically with an expensive radio (it was used - but there was the radio.) I replaced it a few times with the same radio until a police officer I reported it to was kind enough to tell me "These are professionals. They are looking for that brand of radio. So they go through your front light in a way that doesn't set off the alarm - and shut off (something?) that shuts off the alarm - and then just sit in the car - and nice and neatly slide out your fancy radio - probably takes them two minutes and then they are calmly walking away. After that I a) didn't report it to my ever increasing insurance and b) just got a cheapo radio brand put in by my very nice Brooklyn mechanic.

I’m sorry you had this happen. I’ll share what the police officer said to me when I was beating myself up for not securing my purse that got stolen, “it’s not your fault someone took it. That was their choice.” I always appreciated that sentiment. Take your time rebuilding your wardrobe. I’m sure you will have good ideas of what will work for you.
When someone stole from our property the police said with confidence that they would get them. If you think about it, they will eventually get caught and spend time in jail even if it isn't over your particular loss. If that doesn't happen there is always h.e.l.l. for the scoundrels.

My ex stole everything I owned since it was temporarily in storage. It’s been 20 years and I’m still upset by it. I’m so sorry this happened to you all.
I had a really terrible loss of things in storage which actually is still a pending legal issue years later. It’s stomach-rinsing. At least once a day a memory of something I had but lost washes over me.

Unfortunately thieves don't tend to target "wealthy" people because they are more difficult to steal from given the sophisticated alarm systems on the cars that now even have cameras, tracking devices, and the likelihood that police will take that robbery much more seriously if it happens to someone super rich. They purposefully target low to middle income people, who of course it actually harms the most. I'm really sorry for you, that's so frustrating and you worked so hard to accumulate quality pieces and for the stress to you and your family.

I am very sorry to hear this happened to Karolina and her family but some of her takes in this video show that not only is she quite comfortable financially, I don't truly think she values money or her belongings.
Many people would not be able to bounce back from a theft like this or afford to replace anything afterwards.

Our camera got stolen on our honeymoon and we lost all of the photos. I don't give a rat's ass about that camera, 21 years later it's obsolete and probably in a landfill now. I WISH I had those photos though. It sucks that this happened, the sentimental value and the memories of Carolina's vintage wardrobe is incalcuable to her. My parent's home was broken into during their honeymoon, and my dad swears it was the person who sold him their mattress (the only person they told). At least my mom had hidden her jewelry, but my dad lost a bunch of digitized journals and it's sad to think they were wiped and sold
I moved to Europe and shipped several boxes. Included in these boxes was the majority of my books and clothes. A lot of those clothes were vintage and had belonged to my mom while she was living and studying in Europe. Somewhere between California and Germany half of my shipment was stolen, so I lost all the clothes and the vast majority of books. Including my baby photo album. I was sick over it for a couple years. Oddly they took my cardboard boxes, not the vintage steamer trunks full of art supplies and vintage cameras 🤷🏾♀️

I started wearing vintage clothes in the 80s and they were so cheap then. No one wanted them and people thought I was crazy, but I loved them. The thing with vintage clothes is they can't be replaced and that's sick that someone has stolen yours.

I had my house broken into. I was away on a work trip and they must have known they had plenty of time. They tossed every drawer in my house. It felt so violating! They stole so many things that were sentimental but the one thing I've never gotten over is they took my mom's 1951 classic Singer sewing machine that I learned to sew on and she had given to me to sew curtains for my home. I loved that thing and it held so many memories with my mom.

I’m so sorry for your hurt. I get it for sure! Many years ago, I was moving house from Germany back to the US. I went back and forth between air freight and ship, with air freight I would’ve had to hire a second company to move my belongings from JFK to my home in NJ. The ship harbor was closer to my home and grind transport was included. I arrived and my belongings were supposed to arrive a week or two later. But I heard nothing. Turns out there had been a “storm of the century” at sea. And in those cases, they will let cargo go to save the vessel. They didn’t contact me but my partner in Germany. So notification took longer. I lost not only an antique treadle sewing machine but an antique heirloom porcelain Victorian doll, numerous pieces of vintage and antique jewelry from my long departed grandmother, along with all my clothes and many valuable items, and just all my household possessions-basically my life history. I was devastated. It was such a psychological and emotional blow. And I mourned for a long time. I did receive an insurance check but that could never replace the sentimental and valuable heirloom items.
I wrote a fanfiction series that got mildly popular, and one of the readers bound books for a hobby. So you can imagine I was ecstatic when she offered to bind my fanfic as a novel and send it to me! She sent me photos as she was making it, it was beautiful, and as an aspiring novelist the idea of having my own writing as a book meant so much. Well, she ended up shipping it to me on a weekend when I was out of town, and by the time I came home, the package was gone from my doorstep. Someone had taken it. Despite searching, putting up flyers, even filing a report, I never reclaimed it, and it turned out later that there was an organized package thieving ring going on in our apartment complex. That book was a one-of-a-kind passion project, and it probably got tossed into a dumpster once the thief realized it didn't have resale value 🥲

This also happened to my family in Rome :(( We just stopped by the beach for like half an hour on the way to the airport. They stole all our passports, a camera and my mother's favorite jeans jacket (she is still mad about that). But the worst was they took my 5 year old sister's bag with her favorite teddy bear in it. She cried and cried and cried all the way to the embassy to get emergency passports and on the plane home and was sad for many weeks after. And it was probably just thrown away :(

Hello, Italian here. A few summers ago, on the morning of my departure for my roadtrip, my car was stolen in front of my house.
The thing I noticed that is extremely similar to your experience is the late evening visit to pick up or leave something in the car. In my case I had left a handful of things of no economic value in the trunk the night before the event.
I believe that this behavior may have attracted the bad guys in both cases, it is possible that they checked where we were returning and therefore they could have taken it calmly and committed the crime.
I understand your feelings about what you lost: in my car there was my collection of CDs (all not original but lovingly put together over the years), two beach towels that I was very fond of and above all a bag of fabric that my mother had made for me and that I have never been able to use. She is no longer able to sew another one and the thought that an object of such great sentimental value to me could have ended up in a dumpster still makes me feel sick.

The reason why they probably didn’t take the camera was because of the serial numbers. A friend of mine got his nintendo switch stolen and he later found it in a pawn shop and was able to trace the thief by the serial number and the thief’s credentials at the pawn shop.

My mom and I moved from Arizona to Ohio and the movers stole EVERYTHING. All we had left was our animals, a few photo albums, a few clothes, some important papers... everything else is gone, from sentimental to irreplaceable to practical. We went from trying to enjoy our "fresh start" to being angry at our loss with nobody caring or helping.

We moved to Wroclaw and on top of adjusting to a new home, my husband's vintage analogue camera was stolen within the first month of living here. Of course one would feel angry about the monetary and emotional value, but the feeling that bothered me the most was just not feeling like I can't trust ANYONE. It's traumatising in it's own weird way. And people will say "oh well you can always replace things" but people fail to realise how your trust in humanity is just shattered immediately afterwards.
I feel you. I was mugged on my street 12 years ago, and since then I no longer feel safe anywhere in public, especially knowing that culprits were never caught and I might pass them on the street not knowing who they are.
My ex's digital camera was taken by a friend of a friend. I will never be sure how many pics of our young kids were lost with those memory cards. Been 12 years, will never forgive him. He had stuff stolen more than anyone I have ever known.

I got my flat broken into after just half a year of living in a really beautiful albeit expensive flat, according to the police I was actually observed and targeted even though I was poor AF back then and had nothing. I was so traumatized I couldn't stay there and moved a couple of months later. And they didn't even take much, just some cheap jewelry that was worth less than what I had to pay for the door they destroyed.

Thieves broke into the apartment through the open window (it was hot) while we were sleeping between 3 and 6 a.m. took our phones, credit card, and an expensive camera. We didn't even wake up! They left the handprints in the apartment, too. The funniest part is that we even tracked the thieves ourselves but the police did literally nothing. 🤡

It could happen everywhere, especially when you have so many tourists there! And (without dismissing all the economical/political issued that Italy faces) it's still such a beautiful place with amazing culture (my cousin is absolutely in love with Italy, especially the Salento region, learned to speak the language perfectly and recently bought a cheap trullo down there. I was lucky to be able to visit her last month. It was stunning and she has the best neighbours originally from Veneto!). So don't feel bad! Everywhere has bad sides and good sides!

My dad being Italian and us living in Switzerland, it was a really big deal when we went in holidays with our very nice car with Swiss license plate. So it's kind of ingrained in my brain to never leave the car in a shady spot, never leave anything in the car, never trust anyone and always expect to be robbed so keep eveything important on yourself. Oh girl no 😭 you have been EXTREMELY lucky if this has never happened before. First rule of parking is to NEVER leave anything visible in a parked car! My (italian) family taught this to me when I was little and even though I live in a small town I always do this. Rome in particular is huge and you need to be extra careful :(
Maybe she lives in a safe area and never had to worry about this? I one time was donating some old clothes to my local goodwill shop. I tried to find a bag to put them in and only had a large bag from a high end store to put them in. Left them in my car to go shopping. Someone stole the bag out of my car. LOL. As someone who had my laundry stolen from my own building i can understand the feelings. It sucks and its like its not valuable to anyone but me.
A delivery driver stole an ashtray from my porch. It wasn't valuable. But I really just...liked it. It was one of those big hotel ashtrays, like the size of R2D2, lol. That was like 10 years ago and I still think about it.

One time my family's van was broken into, they stole our cassette collection & a mini TV & then just threw the cassettes into the dumpster nearby. We contacted the cops who barely made a report because they were "busy" with accidents because it snowed in a place that snows every year. (The dusting of snow qas how we found the cassettes as their were footprints to the dumpster from the van.)

I used to live in a midsized US city. I was going on a long weekend trip. I had a bag of just clothes in my car. During one of my university classes someone forced open the drivers door and stole it. I went to campus security they said they can’t pull the camera footage for something like that. I went to the police and they could care less. The officer literally asked me why was I so upset about just clothes and if I had drugs in my bag. I was so disgusted.
The problem is never normally just the thieves. The problem is it’s allowed to happen. That’s why so many people will tell you they went to the police and they at best couldn’t care, at worst insulted or blamed them. It will be some kind of local or government corruption going on guaranteed.
The items stolen are usually in places that would be secure (hotel, locker, car etc)

Not only would you feel better, but if thieves knew there was a chance they'd get into trouble, you might see a reduction in theft. I've always thought we should add charges to b&e's that adds time for emotional damage. Also, I've never understood why people go into law enforcement if they don't want to...enforce the law?

I completely agree on the feeling of knowing that someone you don't know touched your stuff. Our house was robbed one summer and the thieves left all of our clothes in piles all around the bedrooms (they were probably looking for hidden money or sth). As soon as the police left, we started to wash EVERYTHING because we felt so disgusted
This happened to us in France while also on a camping road trip. We were in a rush and left only a couple of things at the campsite and drove to the city to go for dinner with a friend we hadn't seen in 10 years. Came back to the car an hour and a half later and the window was smashed and all our stuff scattered all over the car and the floor of the street. I know exactly what you mean about feeling "gross" about the stuff they touched. They had gone through my makeup bag and thrown it on the floor, gone through all my clothes. They also stole some super random stuff! Like they took an 8 year old laptop and my passport but they left jewelry?! They also took two pairs of Birkenstocks. Now let me tell you: THOSE SHOES WERE NASTY. They were old af and we had worn them to the beach so they had salt water stains all over. However, they left quite pricey leather shoes?? They also took a random pair of Decathlon sunglasses that probably cost 10 euros...My conclusion is that what they take is a mix of stuff for resale but also stuff they just like for themselves/their family.
The fast fashion horror experience is so interesting because as a tall curvy/midsize woman I still blamed myself a little for not fitting in those types of clothes. ''They are made for tall and slender people''. But Karolina's experience (the supposed ideal body for those brands) proves that they are just badly patterned and cut, anyway lol
Yes! I love the look of one piece swimsuits, but I always have the same experience as Karolina. And I'm not even tall, or that skinny! I think I'm as average as it gets, I'm about 170cm tall and about 60kg. That drawing she made reminds me so much of every experience I had trying to buy a swimsuit.
Yeah it was really relieving to hear- I tend to be pear shaped, so it's SO hard to find pants that fit. Knowing she had issues too made me feel so much better.
Absolutely. I always have to remind myself and my friend about it because it's so insane that clothing brands are so big and assumedly with a lot of money, but they're all awful at design. Sizing up a shirt? One would think they would pattern it proportionally to fit a larger body. Nope. Just make the body part *wider.* Should they make the sleeves larger or the torso longer? Absolutely not, if someone's bigger the shirts are just stretched out horizontally. It's ridiculous and unflattering on everyone.
Oh, I can ensure you're actually right. I'm 180cm / 65kg and somehow ALL clothes seems tiny on me, like, fast fashion made me wish more than once that I could be 15cm smaller to be okay (no joke, i usually thinks abt it very often)

I've heard this theory from a teenager: those cloaths are meant not to fit anyone. People will buy them and soon realize there is no chance to make them look good on them. In the outcome those people will go shopping again in the hope they will find better cloaths. Rinse&repeat
You really shouldn't have to justifiy yourself (meaning your familiarity with camping, the area, etc.) for getting robbed, it's not your fault, it shouldn't happen under any circumstances. Sorry to hear that!

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I was robbed the exact same way in Prague in 2005. All of my best clothes were gone, and it was just a few days before I started high school! 😭Lesson learned the hard way, never, ever, ever, leave your luggage in the car.

Ouch, I feel your pain. Many years ago, I had a suitcase full of all my Renn Fair garb stolen out of the back of my car. When I got ready to leave and realized that everything was gone, I was DEVASTATED. This was not Party City clothes, these were all things that I had hand sewn, embroidered, beaded, and sweated over for years. Also, there were about $1000 worth of custom made corsets in there. I'm still bitter.
I'd still be salty about it, too. It's even worse when they're all one-of-a-kind items, and it feels like they would be easily recognizable if you saw them again. I had a bunch of vintage/custom jewelry stolen a few years ago and if I ever see anyone wearing my 'set' they're going to have their eyes raked out.

I'm German and had to deal with the police here twice - once, because my letterbox got broken into and my new bank card stolen, resulting in a 500€ theft. The other time, my handbag with wallet, keys, phone etc was stolen when out and about in the city.
Both times, the treatment I got was atrocious. They couldn't have been less interested or motivated. Or sympathetic for that matter. In the police station after the handbag theft, they even refused to try and contact my brother, who lives the next town over and has my emergency keys. I had to go there by bicycle (took me about an hour, but what else was I gonna do without a phone or money on me).
So yeah. Not necessarily just a problem in Italy 🫤

Our family lawyer disappeared with all our documents and some money and the police said they couldn't do anything about it. So that's their fixed response for anything, even about more serious things. We have a HUGE problem with what we call "femminicidio", women who lose their lives to their partners even after they report it to the authorities. The response is always the same, meaning that until the crime occurs they can't do anything. I wonder what we are paying them for 🙃

I felt the same way when my vehicle got broken into years back. They took my backpack with all of my beautiful regency clothes. Which either I had made or had saved up and purchased for $$$. Then they took my car stereo... but left my iPod and my skateboard...? I had been so tired the night before from our recency ball performance that I didn't bring stuff inside and it was all gone by the morning. Ever since then, I don't leave anything in a car that I don't mind if it gets stolen. It's so creepy and unnerving after a robbery. I'm sorry this has happened to you as well. When I got into Japanese Lolita Fashion I had this perception of how one was suppose to build their wardrobe, or how others thought you should but then once I had already been in it for a while I realized, looking back, I would have given my younger-self completely different advice. Basically, having lots of time/experience made me realize looking back how you would very strategically / deliberately go straight for the most important key elements that in the end make the most direct impact and that those items are really particular and often subtle on their own.
I have a friend who said something like "when you loose or break something you get the permission to get new favourites". While it sucks to get robbed and loose stuff, I hope you get the lots of new favourites that will bring you lots of joy
A few vanlifers I follow have mentioned that if you park or get an AnB in some charming little side neighborhood in Italy, you're a target for robbery. Literally 'asking for it's. The people there know it's a AnB, they watch it. They know a van with solor panels is bound to be tourists with money and tech. It's becoming a very sad world. The beautiful pale blue bathing suit! 😭 But on the bright side, more reasons to sew. Your poor Dad, give him a hug from a stranger on line, who thinks he's done a wonderful job raising you!
Yeah. I have a small, diy Van and I'm super paranoid about that kind of thing. Especially since I'm traveling alone. I made sure, that my vehicle just looks like a nondescript delivery/handyman vehicle from the outside. Although I've been told, that these get broken in as well, because people look for expensive tools. Sighs. But, of course, that is not an option, if you want solar panels or stuff. I do make sure, to never park in touristy spots, though.
After very much agonizing, we went with a portable power box, an inverter, an alternator connection switch, and a suitcase solar panel. It doubles as a windshield sun shade, because our windows arent tinted. But ages ago, my self made wedding dress was boxed up in our garage and someone got in and stole our motorcycle helmets and my wedding dress! Nothing else, despite hubby's rolling tool chest! We had a quicky court wedding with one lousy Polaroid my mom took of us, and we were planning on an eventual anniversary fancy wedding (Vegas, Elvis impersonator 🤣) and I hope who ever wore/wears my dress is cursed to this day with boils and disfigurement! (And the same for Karolina's sky blue bathing suit. Perhaps she can get a custom repro made from photos? 😭

There's a special place in hell for people, who steal family heirlooms or wedding dresses or other stuff with sentimental value. It's just so cruel, especially if the item isn't all that valuable in terms of its resale worth. What you gain from it just isn't worth the pain you're causing.

One thing my mom taught me is: DO NOT LEAVE VISIBLE ITEMS IN THE CAR! She always reminds me, even though we live in Florence, where these kinds of things are quite rare. And always remember that, as a tourist, you are way more vulnerable. If you're traveling with a car with a foreign number plate, either empty it or get a garage for the night.
EDIT: Let's be clear, I'm not blaming Karolina or her family.
It is always so sad loosing sentimental items! I can't remember being robbed of any sentimental items, but I do have a tendency to loose stuff when I am on holiday or out hiking, and the absolute dread when you realize it is gone is so overwhelming
Cameras and other electronics have serial numbers, so they aren't stolen too often anymore. Sorry that happened to you. Someone tried to rob me while in Rome too.
Yes! I read many cases about the horrible pickpocketing and theft problems in Rome!
I really want to visit Rome and other places in Italy but the rampant thievery makes me nervous.

Oh NO. The worst thing is not just the financial value- the emotional value and irreplacabilty of handmade and vintage clothes makes them invaluable. I’d be devastated to lose my wardrobe, it has so much sentimental value to me 😢
The only time in my almost 40-year-old life I've been robbed was in Rome, they stole my backpack from under my chair in a street restaurant - I had looped the strap around my ankle to prevent it being stolen so I can only assume they cut through the strap! I was robbed while in university. They stole all of my cash and a really useful pair of boots :( the worst part was definitely the feeling of mistrust and anxiety.
This happened to my mother. It was the 80s, and she lived in a student lodgings with other girls.
A roommate was the one doing the robbery, and she stole from the other girls, too.
My mother caught the roommate's friend with one of her stolen shirts (they had been so dumb that they wore the stolen items at the university), and made her take it off in front of everyone. The shirt was gifted to her by a friend from Mexico, so it was very unique and recognizable.
She got some stuff back ( the university's security actually did their job), but not all of it.
Most of my clothes are thrifted or gifted by people, and I struggle a lot to find my size in normal shops. As you say, the sizes are very strange. Damn, that sucks that they stole that from you!!! I would be very upset because when you take your time to make a personalised wardrobe, it really feels like your little treasure, that you cannot replace that easily.
Really sorry this happened to you. Being the victim of theft feels awful. I had my expensive university textbook stolen in a packed university tutorial when I briefly went up to the front of the room. The book had been open on my desk and when I came back it was gone. I was in disbelief and felt awful knowing that one of the people around me must have done it, but I had no proof and couldn't make everyone open their bags to check.
Who ever it was,, it will be something they can never wear, your clothing is iconic and very easy to place and remember. Give it time,, our community is not insurmountably large, some one will eventually draw your eye on the interweb to something that may be yours. I hope you find the items you love the most again.

Unfortunately, it will likely be resold, so whoever ends up with it probably won't be the people who originally stole it
sadly it'll either land in the trash or 'donated' to be re-sold in another country. it's unlikely that anything will pop up again.
I am so sorry this happened to you, but Rome can be really tricky. As an Italian I was trained not to leave anything visible in the car because people will break in to take anything of value or not, but also the police experience is very typically ridiculous.
A few years ago, I was working as a teacher, and a small group of students stole candy out of my desk. The value was probably between $5-10, and it was candy meant as rewards for students, so it wasn’t like I was planning to eat it. However, the feeling of being stolen from and having my trust damaged hurt terribly.
I’m sorry to hear your family went through that and lost irreplaceable items.

So im also Polish and this video reminded me of an incident that happened to me also in Rome. We were also not In the city centre, because it was a last minute trip and our car and another car with Polish rejestration plates had broken windows, those were the only Polish cars in the area and also the only ones with broken windows, nothing was stolen but we had to go the rest of the trip with a trash bag with ducktape covering the window. Really sorry for you btw :c
You talking about the difference between what you miss and what the thieves wanted was so true for me when my backpack got stolen. Obviously it was a pain to replace my driver's license and my phone, but I was so sad to lose my swimsuit that fit me really well. I hope they enjoyed the wet swimsuit and towel at the bottom of my backpack. So sorry that happened to you!
The dress from your friend hurt my heart the most. However, the idea that the thieves could have been watching as you got your pajamas night makes me feel grateful that they only took material items. In my opinion, the fact that your family went through with your holiday is fantastic because the memories you made can never be lost since they live in your hearts. 🤗💜

So sorry to hear. In the 90s I lost a whole wardrobe of Chinese vintage clothing the same way. Car broken into and evetything gone. I mourned those pieces for a long time. I am in awe of your attitide towards your experience.

My bro lives in Las Vegas and he has literally had his car stolen and recovered three times.
He finally sold the old junker for a car that has better security features. It's so common there for cars to be stolen for just a drop off or whatever and then abandoned with nothing taken. Sometimes he gets the car back with extra weird stuff in it!
Maybe it's because car theft is so common in my country, but I did cringe at the idea of leaving your luggage in the car trunk. Then again, we don't even trust hotels in my family. Our luggage always has locks. I'm so sorry this happened to you, because outside of the money and time spent, your wardrobe held a lot of sentimental value.

Dear Karolina, former New Yorker here. Pro-tip: Never leave anything visible in a car that you don't want stolen. Solutions for the future. If your car has tinted back windows, then, and I realize I'm going up against family tradition here, so take this with truffle flavored salt flakes, but do not pile things higher than the bottom of the window. Then bring a very dark textured piece of fabric, blanket, and when you leave the car cover everything with it. That creates the illusion that there is nothing in the car. The tinted glass hides every thing that is dark. Light colors stand out. But black hides the stuff. Try it sometime. In other words, especially in the Southern Mediterranean area (Italy, Spain, Southern France, Greece), where thievery and pick-pocketing are more common, make sure you are not tempting the thieves. Also if your car was parked in a zone where people are sitting around, be careful of advertising what's in your trunk. My NYC brain would have immediately noted sketchy men sitting around and I would not have spent time opening the trunk in front of them. I would have brought everything valuable upstairs. Never leave anything you would regret being stolen. Car thieves are skilled.
Now Karolina being part-Polish myself I fully realize that there is an old Polish tradition that says no one can tell anyone else what to do. Each Pole reinvents the wheel, or, in your case, makes their own wardrobe. So I am sure you will not follow my advice, you will have to invent your own methods. But if you take one thing from this it's simply this: Never leave anything in the car that you would regret being stolen. Period.

Everybody knows that you shouldn't leave things visible in the car. It's common sense. But in the last 10 years Poland had become safe enough that a lot of the time you just automatically go "eh, it will be fine", because people don't remember anything like that happening to them or people they know. You start feeling like you're paranoid when thinking too much about getting robbed, because it seems so unlikely.

I live in Tbilisi Georgia. I left my apartment building today for two hours and didn't even lock my door.There's a lock on the building entrance and a code to get in. But I only do that when I stay in the local area. But since I did live in NYC, I have a radar that goes up in certain places. Italy is one of those places.
