Personally, I believe that freeform dreads are much more rewarding and are much more unique and interesting. If that's not why you're going for dreads, that's fine, but don't tell me my locs are done wrong. Adversely, don't tell people who are maintaining their dreads meticulously that they're doing it wrong if you're into freeform unless they are HURTING their hair's HEALTH in a serious and tangible way. Don't tell people what they can and can't do when it isn't hurting anyone.

I am a loctician and I do not believe in nor do I use wax, gels or thread to start dreadlocks . Free form is such a beautiful look and I agree with your opinions and love your channel

Astro I have nothing against threads , I just do not find it essential in forming a good bond or in doing maintenance. It’s just preference really. However you wish to have your dreadlocks started or maintained is totally personal to your needs. Happy dreading !
I had a real good friend who is a professional hair stylist start my dreads for me ($100) primarily on the basis that I had no idea how to do it and I didn't want to screw it up LOL but it's been over a year and thanks to the awesome videos that lazy dreads puts out, I've been able to do my own maintenance quite successfully!
I got my dreads started by a loctician with the crochet method- no products used at all. I’m so happy I did it, but I won’t be going back for maintenance ever. I want my locs to mature on their own.
For anyone thinking of going to a loctician: it took me 3 separate appointments, about 13 hours, and over $700. I couldn’t sleep for a couple days because my head was so sore. But SO worth it 😊😊😊

Sounds like you both got a good deal! I did mostly freeform because most of my twist & rip fell out within weeks. I paid $300 to have mine maintained at 8 months!

At $50/hr plus a tip, I’d say I got a pretty good deal. I have other locticians near me that would have charged me double. Also, I live in Hawaii and EVERYTHING is more expensive out here lol

I haven’t brushed or conditioned my hair since puberty and I am in my 30’s. My hair has never dreaded on it’s own. I just have naturally straight silky hair unfortunately lol
I used to section and twist'n'rip by my self. Placed webcam behind my head and then it was easy :D already having 6 year old locks and they are fine :)

My Dreads were done by loctician, twist and rip with a little bit of back combing, no products or any crap used in mine. 11 hours it tuck for £220, she has had many years of experience and I did lots an lots of research before hand and I have had them for 1 year and 4 months

I had my locs started by a loctician about a month ago using the crochet method. It took 9 hours straight to get all 41 of my locs. $350.00 was the price. Phoenix az.
I'm glad I went to a loctician to start mine. However, if I went back in time, I'd probably have travelled to a different person (I love the person who made mine and I think their work is great, but since paying more attention to dreads I've seen other people's work that I feel more drawn to!) I guess it comes down to do your own research and see what feels right for you. I get mine maintained about once a year to keep damage and fluff to a minimum. It's a happy balance for me.

Most of my poor excuse for a twist & rip job fell out within the first couple weeks! So I was pretty much freeform. I got maintenance done at 8 months. I said I wouldn't do it again, but now that its been 4 months since, I kinda want it done again! lol. I also feel like you can just tell your loctician that you don't want them to use wax or other products. I just worry about how heavy handed they are! I've seen some videos where the person is literally ripping the hell out of locs with a hook! Never😱
Question for you!!? I got basically the same situation. Terrible job except like half the dreads stayed and a bunch just compeletely came out. They've been naturally dreading since, should I just keep going or see someone?

Hi, i am in my first week of dreadlocks, i really love them but the negative comments about them are pissing me off... like, all my friends tell me that these are not dreadlocks just because they are young dreads. The only one supportive in anything i do i my girlfriend. My question is: what shoul i do? Should i crochet the loose hairs every week until they mature, should i comb them off, should i listen to the 'haters' or should i listen to my girlfriend's positive oppinion and let them do their thing?
Let them mature! That's part of the journey.
Question: Why are my six-month-old dreads kinky at the roots? There are these spots that are just lumpish, tight and sticking out from the body of the dread. Most of them are very close to my scalp. Also, my roots are growing out and I have a ton of loose hair. Am I doing anything wrong? When will it look better?
On topic of wax: started my dreads back comb no wax, 4 months in went to new locticion who reback combed and used wax. Following steps given by locticion after 3 months change was like night and day. Wax was a bit difficult but using your deep clean method got all wax out after 2 deep cleans
no more wax! i use aloe gel water soluble gels is really helpful not as strong but less build up and won’t get so heavy on your head
So I made my dreads about 2 weeks ago and I was wondering, a few are really thin and a few are quite thick, do dreads typically get thinner or thicker over time, I have curly hair and I did twist and rip
I think it’s your hair do what you want. No matter what dreadlocks are amazing. I wish I would of done it in my twenties but waited to my thirties but no matter what do how u want. I agree no get or wax. Essential oils are the best for dreads hands on. Love your videos glad ur doing more frequently here lately 😃 yay
One thing i suggest. Study videos like this 1st. Then if you rally want to proceed. I made mine by my daughter braided my hair and i just let it go from there. Its been 22yrs. This guy if very truthful to how it is. My reasons are spiritual. So ima lifer. Sometimes you get those wild dreads too. The uncontrolable ones that try to stick out all weird. You have to train the youngens how to behave. Start your dreads in the fall when the weather is starting to get cold. You can wear a tam in public during that time. But let them all hang out at home.
I'm going to be shallow here but that backdrop is comfy, cleanly monochromatic, and awesome.
Otherwise, I agree with the video points, it's horses for courses...
I get my dreads maintained by a loctition and she the only one who could retwist and start my locs. She combined 2 methods to loc my hair first try. Within 6 months I have mature dreads now. 100 bucks at most to retwist tho. I’m getting the best care my hair👍🏽👍🏽

Gibbypastrami they over charged me on accident it was like 150 cause the place I go to goes my length when your starting out. It’s 100 for me cause I wash my hair before I go in too. She started back combing my hair to form knots and then crocheted the knots to the root and continued that way

Gibbypastrami most people recommend around 6 inches is a good length to start. But my hair was around my chin to check area just starting to come to the beginning of my neck. When she finished the tips of my hair was mid section of my cheek. The experience is a huge part of the loctition too my girl has over 18+ years doing dreads and she did an excellent job for me. Research well👍🏽

Starting my dreads in two weeks once my shampoo arrives. I have my girlfriend and my sister to help with this process because it will cost me 800$ to get them done where I live by a professional and I don't have that kind of money to spend on my hair .

I go and see someone every couple of years just to tidy up the roots and the past year or 2s worth of growth and fix my sections which are determined to change shape and merge CONSTANTLY at the back.
The second to last person I saw in Sydney, had a studio at her house and seemed to have a good portfolio of work on a gumtree ad. She done my tidy up, everything seemed fine. Then about 1.5 years later a lot of my dreads started to snap off at the point that would have been the roots 1.5 years earlier if you get me? She must have absolutely destroyed and broke so many hairs at the roots that over time they became weaker and weaker as they grew out and snapped off. It was just too much of a coincidence that they were breaking off at the same point on almost all my dreads. I was losing 2/3 a month at this point. I think I lost around 10-12 before realising I need to do something about this. I had literally tied knots over the thinning sections as a temporary measure to stop anymore snapping off, they had gotten that bad. The rest of the dread above and below the thinning sections was solid and strong.
Then the last person I saw was some Irish guy in Wellington, NZ who had 15 year old dreads and had apparently been maintaining for years. I met up with him in the city so he could look over my dreads and give me a quote. I told him it would be a big job and to make sure he was up to the challenge. I'd kept all the dreads that had broken off for reattachment, and bought real human hair to be crocheted in above, below and over the join to make sure they would be nice and strong. I told him I would like all of the knots undone on almost all the dreads and hair crocheted in to these thinning sections as they would inevitably snap off too. Some of the knots by this point were so tight as they were now months old. He offered me a much lower price than I expected and said he would be happy to do it for that cheap as crocheting in extra hair for strengthening was something he had not done before so I would be helping him do something new and he could learn a new maintenance skill. We met up for the session and he kept going on about how dirty my locks are, and I don't clean them properly. (I almost solely use organic products from lush and regularly use a bicarb water mix to wash so I know they are clean). Also my dreads are super, super tight, I don't know why but they are so dense and rope like and he was adamant they were not real. I kept telling him they were and the past few years of living in Australia I was in the ocean a lot so I attribute that to why they are so tight, I dunno, it might just be my hair. He would say "I have had dreads for X amount of years and worked on X amount of heads and never seen any like yours, They are not real. Dreads are not that tight". We ended up fixing 10 (I have around 50ish) and he got bored and said we will finish in another session. He also to prove a point to me. Soaked one of my dreads that i brought for reattachment in a bicarb water mix while he worked on my head to prove to me how dirty they were. The water hardly changed colour because as I had already stated I wash regularly. He seemed surprised at this and then proceeded to, without asking me, cut my soaked detached lock into pieces to look inside. Trying to prove himself right, again just to see they are clean and he was genuinely surprised at how dense and clean they were. I was so shocked at his actions and attitude towards me, but didn't know what to say. I stupidly paid him the full price that we agreed on in good faith that he would finish the job.
The next session rolls around, and he does about 3 locks before saying, "actually mate, I'm gonna have to charge you more as this is a bigger job than I anticipated, it taking around 15 minutes per dread". I tried to tell him that we spent a good 20 minutes going over everything I wanted doing whilst he looked over my head extensively to give me that price in our meet before we arranged a deal and it was unfair to now try and charge me more. He was still berating me about my dirty hair and how it smells, which again I know it doesn't. It had always been a worry of mine and i had asked good friends to tell me if my hair ever starts to smell, I would regularly make them smell them and I never go to bed with wet hair. I have lived in Australia and New Zealand the past 4 years where the climate is warmer so they dry fast so i was sure they didn’t smell, also on top of him soaking and dissecting one of my dreadlocks on out last meet so he knew they were clean. I reminded him of that but he seemed to ignore it. It ended with me refusing to pay more money and him agreeing to fix a few more but not my whole head. I really just wanted to get out of there by now because this guy was just such an ahole and was really starting to piss me off. I did see a guy in Thailand who had REALLY long, old dreads and he fixed them up and did what I wanted. Just a shame I essentially got conned by that Irish guy in Wellington. I will never see a loctician again. I had seen a couple of locticians with no issues before these last 2 bad experiences. I only ever went really to tidy up my messy roots, but I'd rather live with messy roots than to be berated by a self righteous know it all (who actually didn't know it all) or for someone to do more damage than good.
Sorry for the long post but thought I'd give my experiences in full.
Must add my dreads are about the same length as lazy dreads are, maybe a tad longer and were snapping off at about 3-4 inches from the root so was loosing about 5 years worth of growth 😔
nota pom I’m sorry you had such a bad experience with a few of your locticians. I am a loctician as well. Here in the United States and I would never treat a client like this. This is so unprofessional and uncalled for in the dreadlock community
Im somewhat in the same boat. I went the natural route, only washing w a specific dreadlock shampoo and separating. Nothing else. For the past year my dreads have been slowly thinning and breaking off towards the middle of the dreadlock. Its to the point where a slight tug can rip them off. Next month will be my 4 yr mark, and it looks like I'm starting from scratch because of the length Im losing. I'm considering extensions to make up for the length I've lost
thanks lilymoon0f0, Most people in the community i have met were lovely, especially the 2 locticians i'd seen before. (I think i've been to 4 all in all not inc the thai guy). This irish guy i think was just a negative person in general and pushed his negativity onto others to make himself feel better. It wasn't a nice experience that's for sure!
Dani' el I Know how you feel mate. It sucks feeling like your going backwards after spending so long getting to where you are now. I was going from around 20 inchs to 3-4!
Have you thought about reattaching your broken off dreads as opposed to new extensions if the old part is still pretty strong? Also consider crocheting in 'extra' hair into your thinning parts, that's what i did and its a few months later and they seem to be fine. I made sure the hair was crocheted in well above, and below the thinning section as well as the thinning section itself to really make them strong. I'd had one re attached in the past, a rogue dread that got near enough cut off on a van's side sliding door!! But it slowly over the next few months detached itself, that's why i was adamant about using the extra hair for extra strength. Good luck, and i hope you get it sorted.
hello I started my locs by myself and really kind of messed up the sectioning and have these super big ones and really small ones . i was wondering the easiest way to either split in half the big ones or basically make my big fat very few dreads into more little skinny thin dreads. thanks:) BTW … I diddnt do freeform more like twist nd rip method thanks again :)

Question: How do I find a freakin shampoo that is good for my locks? All the blogs or vlogs are talking about residue free shampoo, conveniently forgetting to mention at least one source of shampoo that is residue free shampoo? I am using a beautiful smelling teatree shampoo from my local nature loving hippy store (&I love that store by the way, It always smells so good in there) It's vegan & all good for nature & all that jazz but is it residue free? The lady doesn't know? She asked ME to tell her... I am loving this journey by the way ;) BUt can you please tell me where to buy actual residue free shampoo? Please?
I just freeform when i started my dreads the first time i got them. I didn't see a reason to retwist them.

Question: I just recently found your channel right before starting my second full headed dread, journey (well the first time was an uneducated attempt when I was 15). I used backcomb the first time but this time I had a friend twist and rip them for me. She also tightened them with a crotchet hook. She has dreadlocks herself and had done them on other people so I trusted her. But I feel as if she may have twisted then a little too much because a lot of them literally look like twisted strands of hair. They’ve held pretty well as I’ve had them for two weeks but **my main concern is will this cause them issues with maturing / will the apparent twisty-ness dissipate with time?
She also root flipped me and I didn’t know it until we were done and i even asked her won’t this make my hair not go together and she was like “nah girl cause it’s twisted” 😔 lol
@@brigidohara3962 Personally I started mine with twist and rip then crochet as well. I root flipped two of them to see how well it worked, and it didn't work well for me so I didn't do that anymore. I wouldn't personally worry about the twisting, I think it will work out fine in the end. I'm now doing root rubbing method to get the roots to lock and every now and then I crochet a little to pull in some of the really loose hairs. I recommend keeping what you have for a while and see how they mature over time. Mine looked completely different a year later. But I'm just some rando on the internet, trust your instincts!
Does afro hair lock naturally?? Because I had a pretty substantial afro that I hadn't brushed for a loooong time. I personally got a mate to separate and start it off. Now it will do what it does, but to start, no signs of natural locking
Sean Chandler the tighter the coils of hair the easier it is for to tangle. if your afro has more loose coils in it. It'll take a little bit longer than a tighter compacted coil patterned hair to actually show discernible Locks or self sectioning freeforming it's kind of a waiting game when starting from short hair with something like an afro because the hair tends to Bunch up against your head first tangle there and then slowly move outward until these "buds" if you will, begin to make their presence known
Alright, sooooo I did twist and rip but my roots are loose like 2 inches of loose hair. So my question is will my hair lock up in my roots without maintenance? Also its not really sectioned. I pull it apart but its a mess. Idk I love them and have gotten compliments but Im worried they wont lock up in my roots
They will, just be patient and seperate if need be :)

I didn't brush or use commercial shampoo (or any conditioner) in my hair for just over a year and they never locked up. 😭
I'm thinking of getting my hair locked, my hair is so curly, thick and mattes like crazy when I dont wash if I leave my hair it will clump in massive bits which makes me think that leaving it would not be a good idea what is your thought? Any advice or suggested videos would be really useful?
Your hair would be great for freeform dreads, you just have to separate them depending on the thickness you want for each lock. This will happen intuitively as your hair Matts and clumps you separate as/if preferred.
I freeformd, but while having a full head of mature locs (3+ years with mixed afro hair/heavy curls) , I have a lot of new growth and people keep telling me to get them maintained..

Fuxk Muffin I free formed so my hair separated by itself into a brick pattern, maybe cuz I used to braid my hair with that pattern but the bricked/stacked pattern in my opinion looks the best, looks more natural unless your dreads are super tight to the scalp...

I have been growing my hair/dreads since November, 2017. From a distance everything looks normal but it constantly bugs me to notice that the left side is really thin or barely even locking (or even shorter seemingly) while the rest (back, top, right side) is going extremely well.
