The early days, weeks, even months of having dreads can be, well, shall we say a little stressful…potentially?. But if you’re appropriately prepared and know what to expect then you can keep the stress levels to a minimum.
The exact specifics are going to vary from person to person, depending on the individual circumstances, but in general, what you can expect is some irritation and a fair amount of messiness.
I recommend relaxing your hair washing routine before starting the dreads to make the transition as easy a possible, but even then it’s going to take a little while and a few washes before your head starts to get used to the dreads. Depending on the starting method used, the scalp might be a little sore, the dreads may pull a little uncomfortably… and chances are they’re gonna be a LITTLE bit itchy as things adjust. Once you get into a regular washing rhythm, things will calm down, get more comfortable… and eventually you’ll forget what you were stressing about in the first place - it just takes some time.
Something else that takes time… and usually quite a lot of it is the maturation process. Young dreads are gonna be loose, they’re gonna be frizzy, they’re gonna be messy - those tightly locked ropes you’re after - those take months, even years to fully form. Forming dreadlocks is a process that requires time and a whole lot of patience. You can expect your roots to loosen, tips to soften and usually a whole lot of fly-aways when the dreads are young. So long as the dreads keep themselves knotted into their sections then you’ll do fine, you just need to be prepared and be patient… ignore them as best you can.
Something that's not so easy to prepare for is the attention... you're gonna get some looks and some comments... and there's not much you can do about it.
I think so long as you’ve done some research before starting your dreads and checked out some timelines to see how dreads progress then dreadlock progression is usually pretty predictable - but even with all the preparation in the world, it’s still rather different going through it for yourself.

Hi! I am in the process of dreading my hair. it's taking me about a week to do. already getting the "you're ruining your hair!" "you'll have to shave your head!" "dreads are dirty!" comments... but i've been embracing a more minimalist life style for a few years now and i feel dreads take me further in that direction. your videos have helped 110% at pros/cons and methods and care. i really appreciate it! your dreads are lovely! thanks for all your videos!

U do not have to shave yr head. I've had dreads 4 times for over a year an each time, with very long hair, I've combed it out. It takes a lot of patience however. And I'd suggest a product called infusium23 for the final comb. I usually start conditioning for a few weeks and then when they're loose do the final comb.

My dreads are 1 week old. I had SUPER slick & straight hair prior to my "baby dreads". The frizz is the most difficult to adjust to mainly bc my hair was SO different before. First month having dreads and I’m loving it. Hardest thing I would say is the odd look from people every now and then but it’s nice because it supports the idea of being different which is what most people with dreadlocks cherish anyway 🤙🏼

Almost 2 months in, I had no idea the amount of research I should have done before hand. I thought it was a hairstyle, not a lifestyle I was getting into. I have curly thick Latin hair, so I actually have less frizz than before the dreads; really curious to see what they look like in 10 months, I will do a before and after as this stage ain't pretty.
I appreciate all the info you're sharing, great stuff I hope you don't cut your dreads off. So many other CZcamsrs do that after several videos, they should just delete their channels it's demoralizing for us beginners to see so many just quit. Keep it up!

I've had partial Dreads (only the back of my head dreaded) for about 2 1/2 months now and have extensions. What was a really good surprise to me was that the drying of my dreads doesn't take long, they actually dry faster than my normal hair. The worst thing I still have to get used to is the management of washing partial dreads. The dreads themselves are not the problem, just that I have to wash my "normal" hair more often and thus seperate, and that it is so much more difficult to wash the normal hair. But I think partial dreads, although they're so much more difficult to handle, are the best option for anyone who isn't 100% sure if they can handle/want permanent dreads.

I've been wanting dreads for some while now. I have been watching your AWESOME informational videos for almost two years now, and I have finally started my own dreadlock journey. I prepped my scalp by washing it less for over a month, and even threw away my hairbrush and only started combing with my fingers. My hair is naturally curly and a frizzy mess but it never seemed to tangle... until I started putting in a few dreads on one side of my head.
I'm now nine days in and nine dreadlocks in. I currently have to CONSTANTLY separate my natural hair from my dreads! Little sections of my natural hair that have tight curls are starting to dread at the roots. It's mildly frustrating because I'm constantly battling; I'm nervous if I just let the rest of my hair naturally dread up, I'll have oddly placed dreads and possible bald spots because of all my curly cowlicks I have!
Question: Should I continue to separate and dread my natural hair? Or just allow it to take its course?! HELP!

I'm on day 6 and I wash them more often and palmroll a lot and mine are forming great. I also spray with a sea salt and tea tree oil and have several essential oil sprays that help with the scalp itchyness. Im in love but my hair is curly and my new locs are wavy and curly at the ends

2 days in and I love my crazy dreads! Twist n rip method and started with 6 inches of length at most. They are hella frizzy though and some of my peers are trying to get me to brush them out! Locked for life though! I’ll have my dreams for ever!! I’ve been doing research for over a year and I’m committed

  • @matalynnemcdermott4862

my new dreads at first were very loose at the scalp but once they started to dread at the roots I then got a few loops making my dreads look then what other anticipated and it's difficult to explain to people who aren't familiar with dreads that this happens to the best of us

people touching my hair!! seriously the weirdest thing to get used to. even if they ask first it's still awkward and they act like I'm rude if i tell them I'd rather them not touch me. i mean really...i don't go around petting "normal" hair...though sometimes i think i should just to make them feel weird when they touch my dreads!

At 1 month and I decided to do my locs myself so they are different sizes. Lol I did end up using wax 😔 after the first few days because there were so much lose hair and fluffy not really looking like dreadlocks. Washed at the 2 week mark and wax didn't all come out and only used water. Thank you for sharing your journey so I can learn more about taking care of my dreadlocks.

GIVE ME ALL THE STRANGE LOOKS!! I am a total weirdo and I know it but I accept it haha :-)
I am in the middle of working on my dreads. I already had a funky hair style and even now I'm not doing my whole head, since I often strive for unique hairstyles and people in my life practically expect it of me. I'm used to weird looks and questions! At a game store once, someone was actually busted by an off-duty cop for taking pictures of me without my permission due to my hairstyle.
So I am not at all opposed to the responses and looks I can get with my young dreads. In fact, I am looking forward to my experience with dreadlocks, especially as I am very much multi-cultural in my heart and respect the many different reasons that people may have them. I look forward to sharing knowledge that I have about the history of dreadlocks, and different types of significance they can hold.
I felt that, as a white person deciding to lock their hair while racism and cultural appropriation are issues in the media , I should at least be informed upon why some people take offense... in fact it has been well over a year-and-a-half since I even started to think about doing them. I'm definitely grateful for your videos about new dreadlocks and am subscribing to you for your many, many informational videos :-)

The first 6 months with new deadlocks are the hardest. But then again it is during this period you learn a lot about yourself along with humility and patients. With my first set of dreads. I found that that my tips would not lock up regardless of what I did. About 6 months in I added extensions and my tips connected well with them. So when I made my next set of dreads, which was about 8 months later I added the extensions to keep everything locked and to give some added length to be able to get my hair up and off my neck. Dreads and desert heat don't mix well together!

Lazy Dreads you always have the answer and have helped out a lot with my journey, I used the backcomb method. I am going on 6 months now and some of my smaller and thinner dreads dont lay flat on the sides. They kinda just poke out lay. If that makes sense. Is it just patience and time I need for them to do there thing and go down by themselves? Is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

  • @dorstinnmykelsmed5406
    @dorstinnmykelsmed5406 Před 5 lety

I used dread extensions which added alot of length to my dreads, considering how short they originally were. For me, what I found the hardest to get used to was sleeping with them. Even with having them wrapped up. And of course getting my scalp used to the weight difference of each dread

what would you recommend washing the hair with in order to stat forming dreads with neglect method ? i've been using neutral glycerin commercial soap but not sure it's letting the hair lock; getting some new curls i've never had in my life though. Really like the channel, cheers !

I started my dreads by myself a few days ago and so far I’ve had no problems. I love the feelings so far, I love the look (knowing that they’re supposed to look like they do) and there’s been no pain! I’m getting nervous however... it’s too good to be true

Wassup man, how has your journey been so far? I did mine 2 weeks ago, I've already washed them once, but I'm afraid that some of them are washing out (2 of them are really really small but I'd say 2-3 inches long and I have really straight and soft hair). My roots on the back of my head are straight hair too (too much compared to the front ones, 1 inch of straight hair) should I worry?

In my 8th month now. When I started my hair was all the way down to my hips and now it's around my collarbone. I only have like 23 to 25 dreads so they are very thick. I've always had to actually fight my hair from dreading (multiple uses of conditioner in a single wash + having to comb my hair with conditioner still in it) so they have matured at a rapid pace :D finally letting my hair do what it's always wanted and it's awesome!
