- Talking about using a sea salt spray on dreadlocks - What it's for, how to make it, how to use it and the pros & cons.
Swimming in the sea / swimming in the ocean can be great for forming dreadlocks. The sea water dries out the hairs and the salt increases the friction between the hairs which leads to more knotting. If you're able to swim in the sea - I highly recommend it for the for helping out your dreads!
Unfortunately not everyone can swim in the ocean all that often and so will miss out on the benefits - luckily the effects can be recreated at home with a sea salt spray!
On the upside you can quickly and cheaply create a spray that will help with the locking up of loose hairs and the maturation of the dreads. You know exactly what's going in and so exactly what's going onto your dreads. All ages of locks can benefit from the spray - whether they're young new dreads, or older mature dreads.
On the downside leaving too much salt on for too long can dry your hair out too much and if it's left on your scalp can become irritating.
You have little control over which hairs become more knotty and so you can encourage hairs to lock that you might not want to lock... leading to more separating being required. The spray will also only affect the hair that it comes into contact with so will never by itself be a perfect replacement for swimming in the ocean.

This video is about eight years old as I respond to it. You just saved me around $30! I was thinking there had to be an cheaper way to do this and you just showed me how to! Thanks so much!!!
that saved my life. it forms my roots very quickly ! thank u
I know you have e already cut off your dreads but I feel very fortunate that I can still watch your videos 😉 awesome
Yes!! 🙌
I am trying to start my own dreads and your videos are very helpful thank you for what you do man
I just want to say thank you so much for making these videos. they've helped me so much!
I just have to thank you for all these incredible videos. Where I live there are no resources for people with locs so I have to use the interwebz which isn't always helpful. Your videos have been the best! Much gratitude!
“Your not creating a fish tank for fish to live in” lmfaooo 😂😂 this guy!
for someone who has as username lazy dreads, you seem pretty bussy with dreads :)
I love how these type of channels have very positive comment sections. It is really refreshing.
hahahaha
I will definitely be trying this out! Thanks bunches!
I love your vids! Very informative and helpful
Thank you for sharing your experience
Amazing videos! Super helpful for me. I went into the salon and got a dread perm (I know not your prefered choice). Your videoes have been amazing for helping me maintain my dreads and avoid A LOT of things I was thinking of doing that would have been detrimental to my dreads.
At least my salon told me to avoid wax like the plague and to stick to only water soluble solutions :)
Keep up the awesome videos and I look forward to being entertained and educated by your future posts!
I use sea salt spray and ocean salt shampoo on my dreads, works amazing!
Thank you! I'm doing my first sea salt spray today! Sending good vibes!
What were your results?
Salutations from Finland! First comment on your videos, I'm a recent subscriber. Really liking all the content, you're a funny cat!
Have to try this spray sometime in the future. I used to have shoulder length(lower chest if pulled straight) extremely thick & curly hair. Looked like a 17th century court barrister's wig, not joking. Had long open hair for a decade, in January I seriously started considering dreads.
After I found your channel and all the useful info bits & bobs on it, I got my dreads done in the twist & rip method about a month back. Before that I had been washing with a residue free ph-neutral shampoo bar (without conditioner ofc) for about a month as well. Got differently sized strands made into dreads on purpose, at home. Thinner on the top of my head & temples, thicker on the forehead & back, I like sleeping on my side. I want as natural a look(without the neglect method obv.) as I can get with zero chemicals. Maybe I'll post you a pic once they condense and shrink up a bit, already starting to knot up nicely thanks to my hairtype. Also I wanted to do some weird look with the loose paintbrush tips so I braided the thin bits at the end of each dread to prevent them from unfurling without a rubber band. Have removed the braids now, after their roots locked up.
Thank you for an informative & entertaining channel!
I'm from Buffalo New York and I must say that nothing feels quite like a fresh sea-salt spray and a long walk in the sun!
I went ahead and so far the results are awesome! Will see more when the dry :). Actually just got out of shower. Left the spray on for about 40 min.
Good information about the length of time to leave the salt water in your hair.
Making mine now as I watch, thanks.
Yes, thank you!!!💖
Best video yet. Thanks
always appreciated, great stuff lazydreads
I started my Dreadlock journey my hair is really long to my butt. Its taking forever. However your videos are making it less painful besides the great tips it gives me something to do while I am starting the baby dreads!! Thanks
+Jenn Gonzales Best of luck with your new dreads!
Awe thanks so much!! I need it lol I am so close to being done. I think my arms are going to fall off. Do you buy chance have a video on crocheting dreads? I feel like this would go much smoother if I already knew how to crochet.
4:10 you took a real mood swing lmao
Btw badass dreads man
I'll wait before using this but thank you.
YES! I'll be picking some seasalt up today :)!!!!!! HAHAHAHA. Congos, lumps and bumps, and loops are sprining up quite a bit :D
Awesome video
Thanks man bc mine are a few weeks old and I was wondering if I did it everyday would that damage them or help them
Thank you for reminding me to have patience and that sea salt spray isn't an instant dread maker. I have to be scolded sometimes...
Thank you for this video :)
man you crack me up good vid
I put a dab of (veg) hair dye in my salt spray to keep my hair tinted purple. The dye is VERY conditioning, so this is a sneaky way to maintain my colour and my knots :)
Awesome idea, dread sister!!
You're not creating a fish tank for fish to live in. Lol
Thank you.
I use a cooling spray for any irritation :) it's easy to come by if you know where to look. :) Your videos are very informative. Thanks :)
This was really informative, thank you!... I've been using sea salt spray on my neglect method dreads, but I've been putting it on AFTER I washed my hair, and then leaving it in until my next hair wash (which is usually 3 days, to a week later, depending on my mood and how oily my hair is).
Putting it in right after a wash will mean that the salt can soak a little into the dread rather than just sit on the outside so you should see more noticeable results. It does however also obviously increase the risks so remember to keep an eye on it :)
@@LazyDreads when you say risks do you mean like mold
thanks man
New subbie here loved your info thanks a lot
On the topic of oversaturating dreadlocks with salt. I go to the sea often and I was wondering if not rinsing dreadlocks after a swim for an extended period of time could cause damage.
I'm in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro hahahaha, I'm blessed, my starter locks will look amazing
Yo I can’t believe I found two solutions and I also am gonna spray 2 times a week but everyday am gonna spray water with aloe Vera but am also gonna
Mix the salt with a lot of lemon juice
I started neglect method 2 days ago my hair is 2" long is it okay if i spray some of that magical sea salt regularly til it forms? Like everyday, after taking a shower?
Does it have to be sea salt used for cooking or can you use aquarium salt from the pet store?
thank you!!!!!!!!!🎓
My hairs only about 5 inches or so but i can't wait any longer lol im starten with my twist an rip an back combing today, should I spray an let it dry before I start? Or while I'm doing it Or after?
Just started my dreadlocks. How long should I wait to go swimming?
You remind me of Wilfred... or Jim Jefferies... and I mean that out of love :D
Could I add a few drops of nag champa oil to the spray?
So i started my dreads and honestly broke alot of hair now i have a few that are thin at the roots already.. If i leave it alone will they fixk themselves since i started not even at the beginning of this month?
how do you feel about witch hazel?
Hey man. Love the videos. Just wondering if you'd recommend any type of root maintenance for young dreads? I've had partial dreads for about a year but I finally went full dreadheadabout 3 weeks ago and there are a few dreads made from super soft baby hair at the nape of my neck; the roots are undreaded for about an inch or two and they seem to be locking super slowly compared to the rest. Any suggestions??
Cheers
beehugmachine I don't personally recommend working on the roots if it can be avoided, it's all too easy to feel like you're helping them but actually be interrupting them.
cheers man, i'm going to leave em do their thing. may have to try the sea salt spray!
When should i wash my hair after spraying this spray ?
what if you Already start your dreads and spray the salt only one time in your hair will it Affect??
Will you locs still get thick using this spray seeing as tho it tightens locs?
The frizz is getting out of control and I’m just really struggling with my dreads and idk if I should brush them out or not 😭😭
Are you supposed to moisturize everyday and would this count as moisturizer.
Do you do this after retwist?
4:15 soo concentrated
Q should u use sea salt spray on new dreads
"Spraying your sea salt spraaaayyyyyy" ahaha hilarious
I straightned my hair about every day with some acceptions for about 7 months now, I never used anything to not really damage my hair with the straightner, im not sure if its damaged to much from the heat, or if should be ok to use the spray, should I use it or not? and im from Michigan so I don't know if the heat Humidity will affect it either, my dreds are only maybe 2 days old I havnt washed yet and didn't wanna use the spray until the day I was
Antonio dago When you feel the hair, if it feels soft - then you can use the spray... if it feels dry - then you don't need to use the spray.
So I have got 3 months old dreadlocks which have a lot of loose hair going around. I wash them every 3-5 days. I do some maintenance on them but there is always hair coming out of the dreadlocks after a few weeks. I think this is normal. If I were to spray some of this sea salt water mix, should that be before or after washing them? for how long should I leave the mix on the dreadlocks? and should I try and fix the dreadlocks (as in putting the lose hair back in with the crochet) before spraying the mix all over or after washing it out?
Thanks :)
Sea salt will slightly dry out the hair and so make it more likely to tangle and knot. When you apply it and how long you leave it on for is up to you. It's not highly beneficial to leave it on for extended periods of time as it'll do it's job in only a short period of time... whereas if you leave it on for days you may find that the salt gets onto your scalp and causes irritation. I would recommend using it a short while before you wash your hair so that if you find it is not all that useful, at least it is going to get washed out soon. Once you are comfortable with how it works and the effect it has on your hair, you will be able to decide for yourself when is best to use it.
Hey man I'm new with dread. I twist n rip about a month ago. I do live a few blocks away from the beach, how long should I swim in the ocean? A good while or just getting them wet with sea water will be enough? Thanks dude!
Swim in the ocean for as long as you want to swim in the ocean for :) I just wash them when you're done.
Hey, me again. HA.
I'm lucky to live by the sea, can I just go down there once in a while and go down and dip my hair in the water? How often?
Your videos are amazing thank you.
Lexi Coan Swim as and when you want. The swimming can help them but it's not a 100% necessary requirement, just something extra.
so can u use regular salt too?
I'm just now in the process of just growing my hair out and I have been using a tea tree shampoo but my head has started to become itchy. Any helpful tips I seen where you said that you should build up to washing your hair once a week. Where you said wash your hair 1 day wait a day wash your hAir again wait 2 days wash your hair then wait three days I'm waiting on my 4 th day now and dealing with itchy scalp was wondering if you had a helpful tips thanks
It takes time for your head to get used to it even if you ease into it slowly.
while starting your dreads did you use the sea salt spray for your dreads? ..
What can I use if I don't have a spray
BTW i love your videos :)
How often do you spray it on your dreads?
🔥
I want to start getting dread but I don't know where to. I'm wondering what kind of maintenance is necessary and how to keep away dandruff and to keep knots. Especially what kind of shampoo to use of at all.
Andre Lewis The only maintenance that is truly necessary is washing, drying and separating.
To keep dandruff away you need to find a shampoo that works well to balance your head/scalp etc - the same as when you're dealing with dandruff in normal hair.
Shampoo choice can be a little complex as different people's heads have different needs - you will need to 'audition' different shampoos until you find the one that works for you and the dreadlocks. czcams.com/video/g35MhTn6pPo/video.html
Question~ my scalp has been so dry since I have dreadlocks ? What would you recommend ?
+hailey If it's feeling dried out even while freshly washed then I would probably look to try out different shampoos to find one more compatible with your scalp/skin.
I need your help please
Just wondering , I pray u answer but is it cool to do this method on mad short dreads . ???
liwesley dockins Well this is not so much a method as such, just a way to keep the hair slightly drier, should it require it. It'll therefore still work in hair that's shorter.
Is it ok to use pink hymalayin salt
Can you use iodized salt
My frizz is unmanaged how do I get rid of it I know the crochet works but what if there to knotted up for it to even go thru
You have to wait until the loose hairs get to the point where they can knot with each other and then they'll either knot into a neighbour dread or form their own.
I got my dreads using t&r method about 5 months ago and haven't got them retwistwd and they have loose hairs. Is it recommended to get them retwisted or can I let them just do their thing ?
I like the messy look that's what I'm going for btw so would I just let them go without retwisting?
Hey, i am trying to make my dread by the neglecting/natural way, will this salt mixture help me ?
blackram223 It is used to make the hair drier and more coarse and therefore more likely to form knots.
Hi LD! Question: is it okay to throw in some vanilla extract into the salt spray mixture?
My dreads are about 1 month old and in the rebellious stages (sticking out, fuzzing and un-fuzzing, etc). I want to use the salt spray mix but I want to throw a bit of sweetness in there. Thanks!
MissesD123 I know of putting vanilla essential oil into the mix... which I suppose has vanilla extract in it... but I don't know about putting straight up vanilla extract (the cooking ingredient) in there.
Thanks! The cooking ingredient has about 40% alcohol so maybe it would be good for drying the dreads but not great for the scalp. Thanks for replying!
hi, My dreads is really dryed out and i want to make them less dryed out, do you got any tips that wont damage the dreads ?
Essential oils in a spray or a deep clean can help. You may also like to look for a slightly more moisturising soap.
can I use Himalayan pink salt?
One of my dreads is about to fall apart. I've only had them for about a week. What should I do about it? I'm worried it's gonna fall out so if you have any ideas of what to do it'd be nice. Thank you!
+Nick Jensen Young dreadlocks are going to be soft/loose/messy - it takes months and months for them to lock into rope-like-locks.
I just washed my baby dreads a day or two ago. I just today bought the sea salt and the spray bottle to make to solution. I'm excited to make it and use it. Should I hold of for another day or is it ok to use it right away. My dreads are about 5 mos along (t&r), I THINK.
It's up to you and how the pros & cons relate to your situation.
What about seasoning salt?
Will pink salt work?
I did my dreads a couple if months ago and having a problem with them staying in have two ore three that won't stay the rest of them are staying good
As long as the hairs stay grouped and don't completely fall back to straight hair, they'll lock up in time.
oh sweet b/c ive been swimming in the ocean like no ones business and i was wondering if it would mess up my dreads since i havent even washed them since i made them
+biblefreak777 Swimming in the ocean can be great for them :)
yay (:
I’m restarting my locs again and hate the ugly stage lol but it’s part of the locking process also love straight hair dreads they are amazing. Another note hate when people of color hate on literally anyone that’s not black when they have dreads that’s just me lol
how to make my hair or my dreads yellow😕
My dreads are eight months old and I love them but they are really frizzy alot and its upsetting. What do you recommend lazydreads? Please help :-)
honestly that's something that it does just wait it of or palm roll the frizz
Weird question:
Could I use, like bring home sea water and use that as a spray instead of making "sea salt spray". I mean I don't live that close to the ocean to just go swimming in every time I want.
yes
That was very helpful, thank you! :)
So I have a question for you. What is your zodiac sign?
Gemini
@ Lazy Dreads ... why did u choose not to put ends on ur dreads .. with a hook or whatnot .. just curious .. thanks bro
verhoren crighter Because blunted tips take longer to drain water and are therefore more prone to mold and lint problems - I also do not use or promote the use of hooks or needles... nor like how they look.
Lazy Dreads thats cool ... i get what ur saying .... i do admit my hair does take awhile on the tips .. but i guess i just perfer the way it looks better .. but its all up the the person .. also ... i agree .. when hair is first used with needles it looks a lil wonky .. but my hair looks basicly like urs ... but i also havnt used needles for over a year since im lazy and havent ordered new ones since i broke em .. but i respect ur comment .. i guess its the same way that i hate the way neglected dreads look or parted in the middle dreads .. cheers bro .. love the vids .
I started salting 2 days ago but it made major loops in my dreads, will the smooth out?
Dreadlocks Lumps, Bumps and Loops
My hair is very oily and after 2months i still have comb coils..... Would you recommend this for oily hair?
cory barbour A lot of it is all down to balance - you've got to balance the hair/head so that it's not too oily, but also not too dry. The main influence is usually the soap/shampoo used, different products will have different results. If the hair is clean, and cleaned regularly, but the hair is still too oily - or if it goes the other way and is too dry, then I would first look to try out different soaps/shampoos/
I kno ur saying use this whenever the user feels it needs to be used but im just asking ur opinion....Do u think spraying the sea salt on ur locs once every two weeks would be ok?
once every two weeks is fine. keep your locs clean and free of heavy products.
If you have extensions is préférable to wait 3 months for spray see salt because its too much moisture (water) and that can loose you extensions. That my expérience. Its preferable to use corn stach whit out water if you want keep it dry.Sorry 4 the bad english im french.
Man one question, what about marine fish tank water???
I have one,and of course I use sea salt because is a saltwater tank...
I'm thinking that may be useful and I may take a dive in to the tank jajaj
Tropical Water You have a fish tank big enough to get inside of? ^^
Shalom brother.
