Obbe Terpstra is 86. He has no terminal illness but his quality of life is deteriorating, he wants to die in a dignified way. This exclusive report follows him as he prepares to commit suicide.
"I want to die. I am not allowed but I want to", states Obbe Terpstra. He watched his wife die of cancer and doesn't want to end up like that. But helping someone commit suicide is a criminal offence. His son, Albert, knows of his plans but hasn't been involved with the preparations. "He doesn't want us to see him as a drooling old man. He wants us to remember him as he is now." A month later, Obbe swallows barbiturates. "He was extremely happy. The atmosphere was like a birthday party", recalls Albert. By sharing their story, Albert and Obbe hope they will re-open the debate on euthanasia.

+Johanna040713 Presuming that's a serious question: Taking one's own life is not easy, especially now that several governments try to remove common painless suicide methods.
Being Dutch myself, and having a lot of experience in this subject, I can tell you our country is not as progressive as it appears to outsiders. It's all theory, not practice.
Obbe had to either do it himself, with all the research, preparation and possible legal repercussions that entails, or wait indefinitely, hoping for release. Considering his condition, the latter wasn't an option.
And Obbe is one of hundreds of thousands in our generation. Considering you're on the internet, I'd say the same goes for your country.

I'd have worded that differently, but you're right. When another person denies you something, claiming it's for your own wellbeing, which you need to improve your quality of life (in this case from horrible to non-existent), you can bet they're full of shit.
That, is the true face of selfishness: To cling to ideas when you can plainly see they cause suffering.

You never suffered enough to feel you are a burden on your loved ones and on yourself!
You never had a pain that made you think everyone will be better off with you been gone!
You have no idea about the subject yet it's very easy for you to make a judgement because you are very complete and righteous!
Someone is suffering to the extent that made him take his or her own life and you think this is selfish??
You are the selfish one idiot because you don't care about what they're going through! You just want them to stick around because it makes you feel good!

People always mistake suicide with euthanasia. It's very different. Euthanasia is ONLY for people who are either incurably ill and are either waiting to die (a painful death) or for people who aren't going to die of the illness, but are so old that everyone they love is already dead or moved on in their life and/or he isn't able to do anything he loves because of his illness/handicap. Euthanasia you commit together and in peace.

Don't say your parents gave you life, they didn't! They just fucked and you were the result! They didn't chose you and you didn't chose them! It was just a coincidence.
Don't say God! Because I don't owe him anything "if he did exist!". In fact if he existed we can argue that he is the one that owe us an explanation and an apology for this misery that we didn't chose and we didn't have a say in it!

Just because someone suffers, it does not mean they are not valuable. Look at the physically disabled! They suffer more than most people do and for the span of their lives. Most of them love life and learn to deal with the cards they have been given. Assisted suicide (apart from that term not making sense) is barbaric and a devolution. Also, who wants to hear about their elders taking such a sissy way out? Be a man! Suffer through what you have to and do it happy. This is the greatest gift.
