    Hello, someone from Estonia here to answer your questions. (:
    First I am going to correct/specify some things said in the video
    1. The capitals don't change literally, the offical one is always Tallinn. We just call some cities the capitals of something since they're associated with it the most . Pärnu is the summer capital - sandy beaches, festivals, loads of people go there for summer ; Tartu is the cultrual capital - beatiful archidecture and so on.
    2. We do not have clear WIFI everywhere lol. Maybe 4G or 5G internet, but not WIFI.
    Estonian and Finnish languages are quite similar. If you'd put Finnish subtitles on your videos I'd probrably understeand like 30-40% without ever studying it. It's a little bit confusing though, our languages consist of the same words but they mean different things. Exactly like said in the video - hallitus (Estonian) - mold ; hallitus (Finnish) - government. When talking to eachother we use English.
    Some songs you could listen to:
    (These are all from the Estonian Song Festival, which happens once in every 5 years. It's a very big event and has been a thing since 1869. All the songs talk about our history/the beauty of our country. A short video about it : czcams.com/video/CNjBwIsT8sU/video.html)
    1. Mu isamaa on minu arm - Laulupidu 2019 : czcams.com/video/XTdOiCa0-4o/video.html
    2. Laul põhjamaast / Laulupidu 2019 : czcams.com/video/AL3V1XQBLOo/video.html

    4. Tõnis Mägi "Koit" / Laulupidu 2014 : czcams.com/video/BTS4JvKXvMI/video.html
    (Not exactly the original folk songs but you'll get the vibe, I couldn't find any real folk songs but if you google "Estonian folk songs" you might find some, these are just some to give you the first impression)
    5. TRAD.ATTACK! - Kuukene / Moon (Official Music Video) : czcams.com/video/BaP6jUgFGkA/video.html
    6 Lepaseree "Põhjatuuled" : czcams.com/video/iPvFAvVPDds/video.html
    7. Küla mul käskis vait olla / The village told me to be silent : czcams.com/video/yh_Wgqa6chU/video.html
    (Some pop songs by Estonian artists)
    8. Ewert and The Two Dragons - "Good Man Down" (official video) : czcams.com/video/ddCsOTWz7gI/video.html
    9. Traffic - Für Elise (Official Video) : czcams.com/video/HlJSQA3uT_4/video.html
    10. Cartoon feat. Jüri Pootsmann - I Remember U [NCS Official Video] : czcams.com/video/3wjb3HtD32c/video.html
    11. Liis Lemsalu - Halb või hea : czcams.com/video/WD1LBckiNHo/video.html
    12. nublu - croissantid (j6hkra eelarvega video) : czcams.com/video/gDDUOCUYhOM/video.html
    13. NOËP - fk this up (feat. CHINCHILLA) (Official Video) : czcams.com/video/nwTTRy4O-iU/video.html
    14. Jozels - Milka (Official Video) : czcams.com/video/W2ZX2RWN8LY/video.html
    15. Curly Strings "Maailm heliseb" : czcams.com/video/jTv3wWQDDgQ/video.html (This one also has a folky vibe)

    Yeah, without speaking Finnish itself, basic conversation is still possible between Estonian and Finnish. It becomes easier if both speakers know which words dont exist in other's language or have even limited vocabulary. Both languages split mere thousand years or so a go. For us, learning Finnish isnt hard. There's no true mutual intelligibility but depending on context 40-60% gets through and rest you might guess or figure out.
    Basically, people in Estonia use either Estonian or Russian (Soviet era colonists) in their daily lives and English to interact with foreigners. Youth generally is able to speak English, older generation Russian, some speak all three (children from mixed families usually become native speakers of Russian and Estonian both).
    It seems to be quite easy to get by for UK or US expatriates.

  • @MrKirkism
    @MrKirkism Před 3 lety +12

    Estonian and Finnish grew apart about 2000 years ago so while the grammar and roots of the words are very similar, they are written and pronounced quite differently, I mean for you it would be like trying to speak with someone who speaks Old English. Also while estonian has a lot of germanic and slavic influenced loan words, finns are more conservative with their language. Some nice and short estonian content to check out: Estonian Dance Celebration / Estonian Song Celebration.

      The languages grew apart much later, in about in 15th century. Before it the written sources show the Finnish language was pretty close to modern Estonian. There is very limited information about old Estonian.
      2000 years, lol, nobody knows which language was spoken here then. Estonia was the LAST part of Europe which was civlized (got the cities, education, writings, schools) and this was as late as in 13th century. ALL other Europe was already civilized.

    • @D4rkstorn
      @D4rkstorn Před 2 lety

      @@marguskiis7711 "Old Finnish" actually just "looks" similar to modern Estonian: It has some similarities, especially in orthography, but it is in fact mutually intelligible with modern Finnish, while modern Estonian is... Just somewhat intelligible to Finns. Every Finn can understand 15th century Finnish. It is relatively more conservative(potentially also slightly more archaic) than Estonian.
      "Mÿnna tachton gernast spuho sommen gelen Emÿna daÿda" is the oldest known example of written Finnish, found in a German journal. It looks very weird and has some "Germanic-bias" in orthography, as Finnish orthography didn't yet exist at the time: But when spoken out aloud, it practically matches modern Finnish.
      The first published Finnish work, the ABC-kiria, from the early 16th century, is relatively close to modern Finnish.
      But yeah, they didn't grow apart 2000 years ago. Most likely indeed around the 15th century, when writing started to become a thing for both.

    Yes, Estonians love rock music. For example No big silence is one of the heaviest bands ever. And punk music - like Winny Puhh (been on their concert at TV Tower (where the 360° Kiiking was filmed) and they are absolutely crazy punk musicians, my ears almost started bleeding))). But my all time favorite is a lovely song by Liisi Koikson "Sinu hääl". Of folk bands I recommend TradAttack! With their song "Ride".
    In addition to the singing that helped regain our independence back, Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians composed a Baltic Chain, people were holding their hands together, through all three countries.

    In my opinion it’s time to let Estonia be a nice small Nordic country. Estonia very deserves to be a Nordic country, because Estonia has done a lot of work, we have many smart people, we are good at digital things, we have northern lights and we are very similar to Finland and other Nordic countries like: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Greenland. We are not similar to Latvia and Lithuania and the other Eastern Europe countries. It’s time to stop calling Estonia Eastern Europe country and Baltic country and forget all this terrible, rude and mean Soviet times. Let’s just stop this Eastern Europe and Soviet stigma thing and let Estonia turn the new page and let them be a normal small Nordic country next to Sweden and Finland!!! Estonians call themselves the Nordic country and many other people and tourists had also said that Estonia should be a Nordic country, because Estonian people are Finnic people not Balts and we are more similar to Scandinavia. Yes many people had agreed with that Estonia must belong to the Nordic group and seperate from Latvia and Lithuania. They don’t even need these countries, because Estonians communicate more with Finns and other Scandinavian countries. Estonia will be a very good partner for the other Nordic countries. We will do a very great work and we will be very strong!!!😁🙏
