      @@A.C.71 Can you hear your gas valve click open and let out some gas? If yes, then it's likely that the board is bad. It could be a loose wire connection too so I would take a look at the wire going to the ignitor as well.

    Thanks so much for this video. It is a super clear explanation of how an ignitor works and how to troubleshoot it. My furnace was not making heat and I was on the verge of looking for an HVAC company to come out and fix it but that would have undoubtedly cost me hundreds of dollars and days of delay. This video showed me that my ignitor was bad and I was able to fix it myself. I used a voltmeter to confirm that AC was reaching the ignitor and that the resistance of the ignitor was zero. My furnace is a Trane and I was only getting a max of about 3.5 volts AC before it stepped down to 1.2 volts. The repair was actually quite simple, just replace the ignitor. Thanks again for this excellent video!!! You're a rock star!!!

Everything was in working condition, as you described, but the ignitor never started glowing. I was about ready to throw in the towel and call someone when the wife suggests, "Maybe the thermostat needs new batteries." And after I've taken your entire video crash course to become an HVAC expert, the problem was 2 dying batteries. I just assumed all thermostats were hardwired.

    • @overthinker1506
      @overthinker1506 Před 2 lety +4

      A tip....Don't know if this pertains to your house or not, but good to know either way! A lot of thermostats are hard wired and have spots for batteries that are never used. If a shady heating and cooling company comes over, I've seen them put batteries into a hard wired thermostat. Then months later those batteries start to die, your thermostat doesn't kick on and you have to call them back. Even though your thermostat was hard wired to begin with....It's a shady practice I've seen firsthand on multiple occasions.

    Exact problem I had. Was getting the 123 V AC at the electrical connector for the igniter but igniter was not lighting up. Replaced with new igniter and good to go. What would have probably cost 150+ for someone to come out and fix, cost 45 bucks and took 5 mins to replace. Great intuitive video. Also, as someone else mentioned, open box of new igniter before you leave the store. The igniter is somewhat delicate. Dropped the first one I bought and it shattered. And also, don't touch the igniter element with bare hands as the oil on our hands can shorten the life of the igniter.

    This video save me a lot of money! It was presented in a professional easy to understand manner. I'd like to add a couple things the high efficency Trane - American Standard are 80 volts AC and the voltage wasn't on the wires if the ignitor isn't plugged in. Without it plugged in the meter jumped up for a brief bit then dropped to zero. I used the back stab method that the presenter described to check the voltage.

    Thank you! Exactly what was happening to our furnace. No glow, but everything else worked. Swapped it with a universal ignitor and it worked! Ordered the real part but it it was nice to have heat while we wait for the real part to arrive. And Ducane are jerks. They made it really hard to access, this ignitor but we got it!

    Thank you so so so so much! you are the greatest! I follow your instructions to do the diagnosis, confirm the Ohm reading was wrong even I couldn't see the crack myself, took it to the shop to order parts, the sales guy saw the discolour portion of the ignitor right away. long story short,, replace and clean my burners alone the way with your other video instruction. Once again, Thank you so much, God bless.

    Just great info. Nothing wrong with calling for a repair, but too many people in the service industry are just plain shady and even if they are not, a lot of things can be fixed by yourself and rather than pay 250 dollars for 10 minutes of work installing a 25 dollar part, you can do it yourself.
    Plus, you get a feeling of accomplishment that's worth far more than you saved...almost.

    Thank you so much dude! I actually fixed my own furnace today thanks to this video. Awesome. I had difficulty finding a new ignitor locally. I had to go several towns away to get it. Home depot, ACE, Lowes, True Value and some other local places did not carry it and the suppliers would not sell to "home owners". There was only one store several towns away. Maybe it is because I live in Los Angeles county and it's not that cold here so.. if my furnace goes out, its not life threatening. I would imagine in the colder places it is not hard to find this part, I would hope....

      Yes, they have new rules in Commifornia which prohibits the sale of these minor items such as ignitor or sensors. On a flip side. They will sell you weed, other drugs and guns an ammo right there.
      Tonight I am freezing over because 3 HVAC stores refused to sell me a $20 igniter.
