- On the set of Alien: Covenant, Adam gets up close with the animatronic Xenomorph head that's worn by the film's creature puppeteer. Seeing this head animate and lunge, we learn how the animatronic operators work with the performer to breathe life into this 9-foot tall creature.
Alien: Covenant is now available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital HD. bitly.com/aliencovenantamazon

Most iconic creature ever! Scary and eerily beautiful at the same time.
2:07 When you try to sneak into your house drunk.
Lyontrlolz lol
LOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹😹
hahahahahha
I'd like to see a cut of the film with just the practical effects.
i realize Im quite off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?
it wouldn't fix the abysmal lack of subtlety or bad designs and writing but it would certainly look a lot nicer
0:46 who else was expecting it to shoot out it's inner jaw
Small Teddy me
Not me
Me
I thought for sure the first thing she'd say to Adam would be, "Don't get too close; he bites."
( 4:12 ) That story was too cool to cut that short. It is amazing how the techniques in a film can affect different people differently.
The Xenemorph terrified me as a kid after sneaking out of my room and watching Aliens from the end of the hallway while my parents were oblivious. Every night that thing would crawl out from my closet on the ceiling as soon as the lights went out.
Even in my 40's now I think if I was Adam walking into the room with that head moving, I would be leery to get close to it. Ha, ha!
Aliens & Jaws will always be favorite two movies from my adolescence. Just their presence on the screen makes the hair on my neck jump and makes me slide to th me edge of my seat.
I love that he’s treating it like a real animal
Holy hell that Xenomorph head looks cool.
Von Huyzen I would agree but something about the alien covenant alien screams xenomorph just the way it looks and I love the more open back tubes idk I just live the way it looks probably my fav alien look but I can see why the original giger design is more liked it’s gorgeous and terrifying
Хр
@Von Huyzen i wish there was a Predator
I love how the head seems like it's paying attention to the conversation...
I love that story Adam had about his dad and sister at the end, and it's so true! We hardly ever see the Alien and when we do it's just the arm or face.
That scene where the animatronic Protomorph destroyed the camera with its extendable mouth was honestly... beautiful.
Eeeeeeren yeaaaagerrrrrrrrr
Hope to see the Big Chap in Awakening with the translucent dome and all
I'm happy that they're using physical and CGI techniques together, I thought the aliens in the film looked really good especially because they got to be as aggressive as they're meant to be, on a graphical sense I loved the film, I just wish the story wasn't really ruined
im glad she talked about it not being bio mechanical. i saw that in the trailers and barely anyone talked about it.
A Giger alien looks like it is wearing a space suit, the hoses and its back looks like a life support system. its all very interesting
I don't get why studios pay to have beautiful animatronics made and then they just animate over them. They did the same with Jurassic world
Diamond Gaming, I think it's to do with getting the right movement, the right size and also so it doesn't conflict with other moving items such as people.
Well, Jurassic World never had Animatronics. They were just models. Jurassic World: Lost Kingdom WILL have Animatronics again, apparently. First and foremost: Rexy.
The Jurassic World raptor heads were never actually animatronic, they were just still models for lighting/acting reference unfortunately, so always intended to be replaced. At least some animatronics made it into that film (the dying apatosaurus) whereas in Covenant I'm 90% certain all of the animatronics were at the very least massively augmented with CG, if not totally replaced. The CG Xenomorph flipping around the ship really killed any tension for me.
Thing is it helps the human mind perceive things as real. If it's 100% digital it often misses the mark because it doesn't really exist in the space. If it's just a muppet it misses the mark in some respects, finish usually. The best way to avoid uncanny valley is to use a hybred of both something real and digital effects to bridge that gap. Or so I've heard from people in the industry as a student.
Diamond Gaming it helps the actor know exactly what their looking at and also for eye lines while filming.
I cannot get enough of this BTS for Covenant
Nice to see that sweet animatronic Xenomorph that they made for the film! I always love when practicals are used in film(s). I just wish Alien: Covenant used the practicals to their advantage instead of the over use of CGI.
It's McGhee Would've been nice to see a combination of the two, instead of complete CG.
@@icecreamisnice117 agreed. Even AvP did a good job of balancing the two. Suits for close ups and CGI for action shots.
The demolition scenes are both cgi and practical the chestburster is all practical, the scenes on the planet are all cgi and most of the scenes of the demolition on the ship are practical
i love Adam, such a technophile and engineer really :D
I love this series of Alien content. Always a pleasure to see behind the scenes. Thank you for sharing!
That's an magnificent Animatronic Xenomorph head, Xenomorphs are badass.
Wait a fucking minute what film did i see? Cause if memory serves me right the whole fucking film had cgi aliens there was no puppets in it at all
SephirothgeneX7 they're prolly touched up with cg
Carbon Night so ridley Scott basically did "the thing 2011" seriously i wished we had neil Blomkamps alien 5
Only non-CG scene is the chestburst
SephirothgeneX7 they used guys in alien suits and layered cgi over them to get the right movements and sounds, they used both
Peaceful RAGE that's basically buying a pizza and putting pineapples on it like what's the fucking point in making the damm thing if your gonna layer it with shit
We are in the year 2023 and there is still no movie that has been able to overcome this wild entity.
As a spooky space kook, I must say that the xenomorph is a misunderstood creature that just wants to get to know the human race.
The design and animatronics is out of this world!
*Cool.✅😀*
?
these are my favorite kinds of videos on this page
Has the world ran out of 7 foot tall skinny black guys?
( if you have to ask, you need to look into the original Alien and how they did that... )
They also did it with predator but I think the guy was nearly 8 ft.
That's the best I reckon, having people dressed up and slightly animating some effects
Not the entire body.
Nope, every Predator film has been a full body suit with animatronic mandibles ( not counting the scenes in AVP where the whole character has to be cgi in order to do impossible jumps and such ).
SuicideNeil Oh yeah I meant to animated part in AVP.
other than that, That has to be the best costume design in my opinion
No, just watch the NBA.
Actually, Bolaji Badejo [the man who played the the Creature in the first film], was 8 feet tall. Any-one can correct me if I'm wrong, of course.
I love these shorts!! THank you!!
What I remember from Alien I in '79 was that it was my first date and I left the parking brake on in my dad's truck going home. It was so scary! A few months later I remember my dad wondering how the trucks brakes were all burnt up.
Notice how much better the cuts from the original Alien look compared to the sequel.
These insights are fascinating. Loving that Aussie accent also!
try again
PANZORification What are your thoughts?
PANZORification Maybe Canadian if not Australian?
Probably a kiwi if not Australian.
I'm thinking New Zealand. Weta (Peter Jackson's) maybe?
First thing she says is that 14 other people worked on this. Loved her.
Credits to the late artist who created the Alien, H.R Giger.
So, when are we getting that updated tour of Adams prop room/workshop?
Practical effects always above CGI graphics
Ripley indeed had balls of steel… able to survived this kind of creature.
Impressive work, but Giger's original costume worn by Bolaji Badejo looked much better.
Wow, was that 1979? I remember sneaking into the theater to see it since it was rated R, but I could have sworn it was a few years later.
I luv xenos so cute! :)
And that's how film making is made... REALISM 😁👍🏻and not crappy CGI !
sad times... same story as The Thing prequel... awesome practical effects, covered up bz crappy CGI... sad times indeed..
I didn't find that out till after I had seen the movie. The CGI was just so bad in that movie which sucks because I didn't mind it as a prequel / remake to the original.
sadly, i didnt even like it as a prequel I just found it very cliche, like Friday 13th style slasher, and that's not what Alien was all about in the first place... there was no real tension in the movie, everything death just happens so fast, you dont even have time to care about the characters... its very average and thats sad, as im a superfan of the series...
"I could tell it was CG, therefore its crap"
Sad times indeed. So disrespectful.
The CGI combined with studio interference really bummed me out.
The Thing prequel didn't use the animatronics. The company decided to do the scenes with CGI.
Xenomorphs are one of the best aliens in cinema
I love this so much.
The Xenomorph is so cute
No ALIEN in this series of movies, will ever be able to match up to the original design by H.R. Giger and Carlo Rambaldi.
Adam does the best BTS videos! Keep going Adam. :)
Nice. Great film too.
I love this kind of stuff.
It may be cruel to say it, but I far prefer the stark biomechanical than the other more 'organic' ones and I much prefer the ADI and Stan Winston ones. But I much prefer the creature from the first film. You can't redesign a Tyrannosaurus Rex or a Shark. They're classic designs.
Beautiful
I actually Pre-ordered the special edition Bluray from Target & it arrived today! It came with a 38 page art / production design book, & it's amazing. Easily one of the best special edition Blurays out right now. However, when I ordered it, I thought it was Pre-order only, but it looks like they have them available in-store as well. I wish I would've known about that before hand; that way I could've avoided this copy with it's cover damage due to the mail/packaging. And yes, I do have OCD. So buy yours in-person.
I love these behind the scenes videos ! Awesome ! It's a shame the movie itself was bad... :/
I want one
people getting mad about this having CGI over it, but what they don't understand is these are just to get the right movements, sizes, and makes the interactions look more realistic, every film does this in some way. This film just decided to make it an animatronic for the movement.
These suits are amazing. I really wish the practical effects were more apparent but I liked the movie nevertheless.
Thanks for reminding me about the bluray, going to pick iup the steel book right know
The magic in the first film came from the WAY Ridley shot the Alien. The way it was lit. Keeping the mystery of it alive. The less is more approach.
MORE, MORE, MORE PLEASE !
I wish they didn't cgi over the practical effects..
@monkie wow did I really write that ('O_O) I dont remember
Sorry lol.
She seem like a lovely person!
Adam Savage...you were too young to watch Alien in 1979? Dude, I’m your age...and I saw it at the movie theater when I was 12. Come on man, you ain’t that young, lol...
I hope there's a cut of the movie somewhere where all the shots of the Aliens are the animatronics and actors, pre-CG.
It's amazing to think it's an animitronic instead of cgi
Jermaine Price ....they put CGI on top of everything
I've always wanted a zenomorph costume for haloween
Wow to boldly go way beyond Ben Chapman & Rico Browning ! Cool !
I NEED to see the sketches his dad and sister drew
Amazing!
Awesome
AvP had by far the best animatronic xenomorphs.
Gigers fantasy come to life 👏👏👏
LOL, feels like the alien's gonna start complaining about being spoken about in the third person
Giger's original creature design was fantastic, and Alien an absolute classic film - near perfect in execution. Acting, directing, visual design, lighting, cinematography, special effects, and the script writing were all top-tier - and it still shows. And all on an $11 million budget.
Covenant, however, was a corporate franchise propelled mindless turd, with plot holes so big you could drive an armored personnel carrier through them.
I wish the Xenomorph was actually the focus in the movie. It was in the movie for like 5 minutes
For those confused, they used practical FX on set to combine with CGI later. Having identical "objects" on set meant they could get accurate lighting references to help achieve better "realism" on the digital models or make composites.
...
My opinion? Yeah, it didn't workout so great cuz the alien scenes were so damn rushed and reckless. The "character" was lost and CGI unimpressive especially since they simplified the alien design. Lighting was good though... not that it matters
Adam you should make your own alien costume!!
I want to put that in my mailbox and wait for the mail lady.
This is a combination of art, mechanic, engineering, and of course money.
I haven't watch any of the Alien movies yet but I have read the graphic novel which was super cool!
Watch Alien, Aliens, and AVP those three I’d call the best (alien and aliens are masterpieces and AVP is just a fun action movie)
wow so cool
This is radical
The practical effects shots are instantly so much scarier than the cgi we ended up getting, just has a presence, more realism, movements are strangely more eerie, it just looks right. You can't beat the real thing :P However I loved covenant, but I think they mishandled the alien slightly.
Woah that animatronic is so cool!!!!! I wish I could have it. ;-;
Really sit back and imagine a 10 foot alien chasing you down that is so fucking scary the movie isnt but the thought of that irl i cant
This must have been before this rig was given up on. I spoke with Conor O'Sullivan on Alien Day, who was the creature effects supervisor and he described this very puppeteering rig, but said there wasn't enough time to both design and bug-test it to satisfaction and ran out of time before all the flaws could be remedied, switching over to pure CGI. You can see the obvious difference to what's on screen, due to this one having the much thinner limbs.
So, this is basically rare footage of the pupeteering rig they couldn't get to function right in time.
Ironic they showed the original chest burster in this video and not in the movie.
I want an animatronic like that for a pet!
I'm honestly surprised that Norm the Martian didn't make an appearance in this episode.
Ermagawd!!! AWESOME!!!
To set everyone straight. Watch the CGI breakdown on CZcams. Then you can see that we never actually see this suit in the movie.
Very cool movie geek stuff. Love it. ☕🙃
Wow that looks way better than any type of CGI in the film but you'll have to put in CGI or you'll be stuck with half of a xeno
Ridley Scott: "I always work the camera, so I see exactly what's going on." Guess that's out the window.
All of this is on the cutting floor... lol well done Ridley
MiTiKoS FPV Well done Fox, who had final cut on this film, Prometheus, and all Ridley's major films for the past twenty years. This is why he releases director's cuts of every single film and they are always, always better for it.
Ikr
0:42 I'd be afraid to get close
edit 3:05 That! That is terrifying.
Where were all these lovely practically effects I'm the finished product?
AWESOME! I LOVE RIDLEY MORE AND MORE. PLEASE RELEASE A DIRECTOR'S CUT. I WANT MORE ALIEN!
haha i love how long the head it
I prefer the 1979 effects over the 2017 cgi any day
It would be cool if they focused more on really cool animatronics that are ground breaking and new, instead of constant cgi
