- Today in this video we are covering, in my opinion, the most hated players in college basketball history. Who did I miss?
Hope you guys enjoy the video and as always, welcome to the Hardwood :)
I read the title and automatically said "This will be Duke heavy"
LMFAO. I could have added more. Hurley. That Steve W guy. Shane Battier. The Duke hate is real.
@@hardwood_yt LMFAO yeah you could have added 2 more white guys. The white boy hate is real.
🎯🎯🎯
The video would be plenty long sticking just to Duke
Grayson Allen is an elite heel. He's like the enforcer role-player that you used to see back in the day in the NBA, the guy that was in just to piss off the opponents and cheap shot their best player
If it wasn't for Grayson Allen, J.P. Macura from Xavier would've been the most hated player in college basketball from 2014-18... he was just the ultimate antagonist on the court, but he's actually a really cool dude off the court
FSU broke Allen when Duke visited Tallahassee back in early 2017. Left the court crying as the "f*** you Grayson" chants continued to rattle while he hid his head with a towel. What a great game!
As I Xavier fan I love JP but If your not you hated him.
@@zachbrophy9444 He was basically a pro wrestling heel whenever he played on the road... really good, fun dude off the court
Bro forgot Aaron Craft (he did absolutely nothing wrong, we all just hated him for no reason whatsoever)
Very hated lol. Had to pick and choose and some didn’t make the cut haha. That’s a good one tho
he was a hacker on defense, got away with tons of fouls
He eliminated Iowa State from the NCAA tournament with a near buzzer beater 3. I will always hate Aaron Craft.
@@hardwood_yt you should make a part 2 then
He got Bruce pearl fired at Tennessee
The 30 for 30 on "I hate Christian Laettner" was great.
I loved Duke when he played, and I can see why he was hated, but he also might be the best college player of all time.
Superb video. Newly subscribed. PLEASE make this an ongoing series. We NEED this 🙏🏾
How does anyone these days think they can get away with crap like Grayson Allen did? And then try to give some BS excuse?
It’s Grayson, Redick, and Laettner. In that order from #3 to #1. It’s not close, it’s not a discussion, and is universally accepted. Go Duke!
I got Redick first.
NO! Bro 😂. You HAVE TO do a video on the Reddick vs Maryland beef. Beef History did one and it is waaaaaaaay deeper and more heinous than you can think. They were actually the ones behind his phone calls and actually verbally attacked his family.
He is the most hated because an entire fanbase consistently made it PERSONAL!
Dude I didn’t have time to fully get into it, but yeah it’s unbelievable. He did say a lot of UNC fans would call him too but Maryland was the driving force. They were awful to him. I had some things included that we took off. I’m a new channel and I didn’t wanna somehow get demonetized lol
@@hardwood_yt Fans know how to get under people's skin but this was universally too far.
Like...OMG 😬. Much respect to alluding to it because there's hate and then you got Maryland and UNC levels of hatred.
Nothing but respect for you!
Watch Secret Base
I once saw a top 5 of most hated college basketball players that went like this:
1) Christian Laettner
2) Christian Laettner
3) Christian Laettner
4) Christian Laettner
5) all other hated players combined
Lmaoooo
@@hardwood_ytGrayson should be no1. Laettner was a 2-time ncaab champ and top5 greatest college bb players who was portrayed as a villian.
I like Laettner. Anyone that makes UK fans that mad this many years later is a friend of mine.
love ur vids bro just subbed def gonna keep watching u for years to come
Thank you so much bro! Tryna get a Caitlin Clark vid out before they tip off vs South Carolina tonight 😭
@@hardwood_yt i’m not even gonna cap i’m a huge nba guy i don’t know too much about college hoops. i just knew everyone HATED laettner. i want to learn a lot about college hoops. the game is played much differently at the collegiate level and i want to learn how it’s played, i feel like that would benefit my irl game. do u watch any nba channels? if so which ones?
Don’t worry, this isn’t just a college basketball channel. Just been doing it because of March madness. NBA playoffs is coming :)
Kenny Beecham is my favorite nba CZcamsr. Kenny for Real is the channel name I think. Yeah man def study college ball. The NBA game is just so different and not something that’s going to help you much right now more than likely. You can learn a ton from college.
3:14 I was at that game with my dad and my lil bro. We got tickets for Christmas. Everyone in the arena was shocked. I kept yelling “F YOU GRAYSON!” (I’m a diehard bulls fan). My lil bro started yelling it too but he didn’t know what it meant 😂. I am still, a year later, shocked at that play.
You gonna make it big bro keep grinding
Thank you bro!! Appreciate it
This video could be 45 minutes long just on Duke.
1. Laettner - the dirtiest player in CBB history, loved to scratch and elbow.
2. Redick - wasn't just the occasional head bob or wave. He did it the entire game.
3. Allen - someone needed to just kick him in the nuts
4. Wojokowski - the stupid floor slapping thing
5. Gerald Elbow Henderson
6. Bobby Hurley - just over the top stupid intense
7. Battier - flop and flop some more
8. Cherokee Parks - a less skilled oaf after Laettner
9. Dahntay Jones - played with his balls a lot
10. Scheyer
Dishonorable mention: Horvath, Shav Randolph, Maggette
That's just off the top of my head. Don't forget their wonderful coach quitting on the team one season in the 90s because they stunk and he didn't want to tarnish his win percentage.
How a classy guy like Grant Hill ended up there is a head scratcher.
LMFAO This DUKE breakdown is awesome, but you forgot arrogant Danny Ferry who was a senior when Laettner was a freshman and I'm quite sure bullied and taught him the villain ropes. I loved Hurley but you have a point, I think Woj got the excessive floor slapping from him.
Also look up Brian Davis who was a starter on the Laettner, Hill, Hurley teams. Omg his body language alone. It's like watching Carlton from Fresh Prince of Bel Air if he was taller, arrogant and not likeable, lol. And yes shout out to Grant Hill, class personified. To me the GOAT Duke player. Laettner was a winner but his championships didn't come until Hill was on the team.
As a Kansas fan for life, and a current senior here, over recent years I know every Big 12 schools fanbase has HATED Christian Braun. He was very vocal to fans and sometimes players on the court.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Lew Alcinder perhaps? Probably before our time, but I'd imagine that he was pretty hated if they created a ban on dunking just to spite him.
Brad Davidson didn’t do anything wrong except for him putting his foot under the basket, and still you never know if he even tried to do it on purpose 😂
Him hitting dudes in the nuts around screens? You realize he had a reputation among all of his peers right?
I totally agree. There is def evidence of him doing some dirty stuff, not nearly as polarizing as Allen's stuff though. i don't thinnk he meant any harm with what he was doing and cameras show hes not even looking at players when he hits them. just looking for the ball. I sent Davison a DM on Instagram once and he responded, I think hes a pretty nice guy lmao
Youve never played basketball if you think those nut shots werent on purpose.
@@14isoldenough lmaoooo your hilarious
@@14isoldenough I’ve probably played more organized ball than you and your entire family kid. The Mccaffrey incident is the only one that looks like it’s on purpose, the other ones seem like he’s just fighting through a screen against a bigger guy and didn’t see it coming. It wasn’t intentional at all, and there’s no proof that it was.
Alternate title: Christian Laettner and some other players you may have heard of
Hahahaha
You gotta be a specific age to remember Ron Slay at the University of Tennessee. As a UK fan that guy is the most remembered in my mind. Sure everyone was butthurt over Laettner and Duke in 1992. But UK got payback in 1998. Ron Slay was a guy we had to see at least twice a year for three years. When most players stayed at the same school for 4-5 seasons.
Another fire video 🔥
thank you bro!
Interesting how 3 played for coach K lol
I could have included so many more 😭😭
@@hardwood_yt Duke isn’t even that bad
@@emerolled lmfaoooooo good one
@@emerolled 😭
Dude literally defending his own players amd afraid to get criticized. Wasnt a fan of him tho
Laettner isn’t hated merely because he was good and played for Duke. In his autobiography, HOF coach Jim Calhoun singled out Laettner as “the dirtiest player I’ve coached against in my career.” In the entire book, Calhoun criticizes no other opponent by name other than Laettner. Btw, the infamous 30 for 30 “I hate Christian Laettner” episode includes several sort of neutral comments from Calhoun-but it omits the damning one from his book. I need no other proof to see that episode as bullshit pro-Laettner propaganda. How could you leave that out?
You should a video on most hated fanbases like Maryland. I swear their fans are certifiably insane
graysons lasted long in the league because hes actually really good at the sport
He’s a very good player. I could have stated that better. I just meant I’m shocked something worse has happened in the league that derailed his career. He’s a great role player in Milwaukee rn
Henderson defo watched Vardy Leicester highlights before every game 💀💀
2:38 seems like people just want a reason to hate allen
a lot of them seemed clumsy and in this he can't even see the person
who moves like that unless it is to do exactly what he did
Strongly disagree. Brad Davison was worse but Grayson’s we’re deliberate
I'm a Duke fan, dude stepped up big in the tournament during his freshman year when Duke won a championship.
He's a great player, and I love Allen.
But this shit was all because of his immaturity, and he absolutely deserved the backlash.
It's stupid that the video said they're surprised he's still in the league, because he is absolutely an NBA level player.
@@mitchtherevolution my point with being surprised he is in the league is only because of the Caruso play and derozan. He’s a great fit with the bucks as a role player but I’m shocked something hasn’t happened to ruin his career. He’s had some really bad moments in the league.
@@hardwood_yt
I agree the Caruso play was bad, and he should have been suspended for a shitload longer than one game.
The DeMar DeRozan thing was hardly anything more than minor shove that deserved a flagrant 1, the only reason that got blown out of proportion is because of Allen's bad reputation with Chicago.
The fab five from Michigan was hated quite a bit.
a lot of sneaky athleticism on this list.
LOL best comment
Too be fair. Grayson Allen didn’t push Derozan intentionally. Patrick Williams screen force Grayson Allen to push Derozan
haven’t watched the video yet but #1 has to be Christian Laettner 😂
I didn’t really ranked them haha but yeah he’s prob #1 all time
I'll defend Grayson Allen's second tripping incident, against FSU. It was the last few seconds of a game where the outcome was determined, and the FSU player was still playing aggressive, physical, off-ball defense against Grayson at midcourt. Grayson retaliated. It wasn't good, and it might look worse than the other 3, but it was a chippy retaliation, not really a dirty basketball play.
Love this guy!
Every player on this list has one thing in common lol.
Something about being a white dude and managing to make it to that high level seems to give them a giant chip on their shoulders lol
@@Kagemusha08 Let me correct you. Something about being a white dude and managing to make it that high level seems to make them hated.
@@pacefkaYou didn’t correct him. He was right. You weren’t
Who the fuck are you? The judge?
@@postverifiedlifestyleWhat’s the title of this video again?
Several of the 1971-72 Minnesota Golden Gophers, most notably Ron Behagen, Dave Winfield (yes, THAT Dave Winfield, who played basketball as well as baseball), and Jim Brewer. At least a couple (Clyde Turner and the late Corky Taylor) did apologize.
Dang man. Never knew that. That’s what I love about College Basketball. So much history
Grayson Allen is basically what a guy like Rodman is in todays time. Dillon Brooks too. They know they can play well then do something weird to overshadow it.
Morrison was known for not taking showers after games. He stunk!
Lmfaoooo I read that 🤣🤣🤣 definition of a modern day hippie
Surprised, with all the Duke comments, theres been no mention of Steve Wojciechowski...the floor slapper.
People didn't like Morrison because of his hair mostly lol
At least that's what I remember lol
Now Reddick is being hated for Larry Bird comment.
there’s no way you said JIF and FLICKED off within 5 seconds of each other…..that is insanity dude
Oh boy did people clown Redick for his poetry.😂
KD Johnson snubbed
Ernie Grunfeld. At the risk of it appearing that I have been around for more than the last few years, I will point out this Tennessee player from 1973 to '77. He was arrogance personified. Grunfeld twice during a 1976 game at fierce rival Kentucky sneaked to the free throw line to shoot FTs when another player was supposed to shoot them. He apparently just wanted to see if a player could fool the refs, the announcer and visiting fans by pulling such a con. And he got away with it both times. Sports Illustrated put Grunfeld and Bernard King on their cover by the headline "Double Trouble at Tennessee."
When Tennessee was knocked out of the tournament the next season, ending Grunfeld's career, Kentucky fans were jubilant. The fact that Grunfeld, despite being 6-6 and 240 pounds and a prolific scorer at Tennessee, never amounted to anything in the NBA was also pleasing to his critics.
The SI story touted him and King as a force to enable Tennessee to replace Kentucky as the new power in the SEC.
But in the '77-78 season, Kentucky won the NCAA championship, Tennessee went dormant, and Grunfeld was largely forgotten.
This is amazing 😭😭 I had never heard of him. That’s what I love about college basketball. So many forgotten icons. I’m planning on doing an entire history of March madness video and I’m amped to uncover more stories like this. Thank you for your comment!
@@hardwood_yt You are welcome! Grunfeld's parents were born in Romania, and were refugees from Hitler. If I had known of him in any other context than basketball, I probably would have found his story admirable.
Tyler Hansbrough is easily one of my top 2 favorite college players of all time
He was a stud. People loved to hate him for weird reasons
lmao as time goes on i think some folks owe poor jj an apology .. the fans wanted another lattener to hate .. and they pushed him till he gave them one lmao i'm glad he's over come it though and is now leveled out and gets some respect
The Duke salt
Watching Grayson Allen bitch slap Chicago that series was so fun. Too bad we flamed out next series...
jr reid from unc was far worse, there were many times he would elbow players in the head, he was known for that, you can see it at the duke at unc game in 89 when he elbowed brickey in the head. and he did it in the ncaa tournament vs michigan in 89 too.and both were called technical fouls, and dean smith took him out both times to cool him off.
In the NBA in 1996, he knocked out a couple of A.C. Green's front teeth with a deliberate forearm shot.
Ain’t no way you only have 3k subs
Appreciate you Brodie! We just getting started. New upload tomorrow. 👀
7:06 no way bro grabbed Dickinsons dingaling 😅
You're surprised that allen lasted this long in the nba???? Man is averaging like 10 a game while playing good defense and shooting over .40% from 3. He will be in this league awhile
Not his play. His continued antics. Players still don’t like him and I’m shocked he hasn’t done something career ruining. He’s a great role player with the bucks rn
Goated
Appreciate you
The fact Grayson Allen resembles Joffrey from GoT absolutely does not help matters.
Hahaha FACTS
He legit seems like a good dude off the court too. Just must have a switch that flips
Grayson Allen should be the clear no1 on the most hated list. No doubt!
lol true true my b
Would Duke have won the UK game if they had called a technical on Laettner, LIKE THEY SHOULD, for stomping on Aminu Timberlake??
Probably not. Yeah it was bad
They did call a tech. Had he been ejected, I doubt Duke wins, and we'd have been robbed of the greatest shot in the history of college basketball.
Fascinating to me that Laettner last played for Duke over 30 years ago-yet he is still, by far, the most hated player in college basketball history.
It hasn't been thirty years.
@@brandonpurdy7658 Really. He didn’t play in 1990?
@@mrmojorisin8752 My bad. I'm stupid. I was thinking about J.J.
@@brandonpurdy7658 No biggie. I do the same all the time.
All of the assumptions I had going into this were correct lol
I wonder why that was ...
No Jimmer Fredette?
Aaron Craft!
Just not iconic enough. That Devendorf dude too. Debated adding them.
Go Duke!!
You gave 5 seconds to laettner
I agree that the Caruso injury was completely unacceptable but I feel like mostly everything else that Grayson does gets blown out of proportion. Grayson like antics where pretty common place in the NBA before social media.
Good hard foul.
Lmao Grayson hip checked that soft ass Garrison Brooks, loved that one
I loved the final score of that game lmfao
Grayson Allen used to go to the same school as me
Aye that’s hype
We know who takes the title now
Why I love duke
Haha someone’s gotta
Grayson may have been an incredibly dirty player in the past, but he’s turned into a great presence for the bucks. The foul on AC didn’t seem to be intentional, and the time where he “elbowed” Demar was when he got tripped up by Ayo Dosunmu. May just be saying this as a bucks fan but he’s been a great role player and person in general for the time he’s been on this team
Shit gotta add Edey to this list now lmao
Edey gets so much hate for no reason it's insane
Still surprised Grayson has lasted this long???
Funny there's no Jalen Rose who is famous for saying on video he hated Grant Hill for being an uncle tom.
I couldn't stand Marshall Henderson 😂😂
Dude he’s hilarious lmaooo
As an Ole Miss fan, he was so much fun to watch. My favorite game of him was the 2013 Vandy game. His energy is unmatched IMO.
@@JojoStokes he hit a deep three to send that game to OT right?
@@hardwood_yt Yessirrr!
Laettner wasn't hated so much as envied.
I love all the Duke players except for Grayson.
Big Duke fan!? Grayson made it really hard on himself for sure
Well regarded as the dirtiest player? That doesn’t make sense.
Idk i actually like Grayson but maybe cause I like Duke
Definitely hated Tyler Hansborough 🤬
4:19 why did you show a graphic saying steph curry attempted 3.8 threes per game? He averaged 9+ in college and nba. Never has he attempted 3.8. That is how many he makes per game...
Not sure why my editor put that in there. It wasn’t in the script. But I didn’t catch that until after it was uploaded, so I let him know.
@@hardwood_yt Makes sense. Shit happens.
Marshall Henderson was a dawg
🐘 on the room...we all know why they was hated😏I'm sorry,I'm based af.
Hahaha so true, I get what you're putting down and it's true. Especially with Laetner. Everybody was about the, shall I say inner city Fab 5 back then
Henderson's giant shorts are ridiculous. He looks like a child wearing his dad's clothing.
There's one thing that's similar amongst all these players. But I can't quite point my finger on what it is.....
I lost some respect for Coach K.
That quote was terrible lol
Christian Laettner???
What about him? He’s in the video
It’s edey now
If you hit another player, and I don't care what excuse you use, then you need to be suspended from playing for AT LEAST 1 Full Season.
Now, if you hit another player while you are in the "Handshake line", then you need to be suspended for ever! No excuse for that! You are DONE playing.
You definitely wouldn’t have it happen this much if those were the consequences
I hated Adam Woodbury on the court
Lmao I’m a Hawkeye fan and I totally get it
@@hardwood_yt thank God you’re a Hawkeye fan. Go Caitlin
@@spencerludman3915 she’s going up against Goliath tomorrow. Praying she succeeds with all the doubles they’ll throw at her 😭
We hated Tyler Hansboro
I hated him so much. Seems like a good dude now tho
Go ahead and add Brandon Miller to this list
Learner should’ve been ejected
Angel Reese.. who doesn't deserve it.
Morrison is disliked because he stinks. Like literally stinks. He hates showers, to the point that Gerald Wallace had to physically put him in a shower in the bobcats lockeroom.
Total disgrace
Has anyone noticed a skin tone correlation between all these dirty players could be the lack of athleticism?!? 😅
Zach edey
No way lol
You are obviously not a Duke fan lol
So all the most hated players in college basketball history were white? Interesting !! My vote goes to Demarcus Cousin in his one and only season in Kentucky.
