  • We had a delightful walk yesterday on Fort Myers Beach. We always head down to the South end as that is where we find the most shells and the best critters. It had rained pretty good the night before and was threatening to rain again at the end of the day, but we had plenty of time to explore the beach and I'll show you all the stuff we found.

    The scallop you have a question about is a Bay Scallop and they come in only those colors but different patterns. I love finding those, they are so lovely. I've wondered about the acid dip for shells too, but they say don't dip if you want to keep the shine, or don't dip if they have any holes. I think I get too nervous. Let us know how it goes?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 4 lety +1

      That one Bay Scallop is a beauty, but I really want to see what the acid does. I've been putting off messing around with acid, but I'm so curious to see how the shells turn out. I will keep you updated!

  • @aries327
    @aries327 Před 4 lety

    I really enjoy your vids! With things easing up a bit I will probably be down to Sanibel in late June 😃 and I’m looking forward to that! Anyways, I’ve done the acid dip and it really helps taking off the yucky stuff. I’ve learned to change out the rinse water frequently so the shells get a really good final rinse. I don’t dip the shells that are shiny (olives, sun-ray Venus, shark eyes). I was nervous also so I tried my not so perfect shells first to get an idea of what I was doing lol
    Anyways, I’m super jelly of the crown conch finds! I’ve only found the tippy top piece on Sanibel in January and I was so happy! One of theses days lol

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 4 lety +2

      Well I hope you find goodies when you're down here in June! I have heard I shouldn't dip the shiny shells so my olives will not see any acid! Luckily I have plenty of shells to kind of test things out with. I'm wondering if it will wreck the shine on my Florida Fighting Conch. I guess there's only one way to find out! I'm hoping the crown conchs we have and maybe some murex will clean up nice. I'll find out soon enough! I don't think I've ever found a crowned conch on Sanibel, but lots of the lightning whelk and the tulips. And even when I don't find "good stuff" I'm always happy just to be at the beach!

    • @aries327
      @aries327 Před 4 lety +1

      SWF Beach Life I’ve dipped fighting conchs and as long as it’s a quick dip to take off that white film, they seem to come out good. Mineral oil seems to help after dipping too. I’m going to explore Bunche beach when I get down there cause it looks interesting from the vids I’ve seen 🙂

    Hello from Denver, Colorado! I love watching your videos. My favorite thing to do when we vacation at St. Pete Beach is look for shells. The first time I went to FL I found a Fl. Fighting Conch, it was alive and I thought a squid had found a home in it. I had no idea that shells were actually alive until I went to FL and my boyfriend had to explain to me that the animal in there was actually the conch, I always thought anything in a shell had found a home in it, like hermit crabs, haha! Lol, guess that’s what happens when you don’t grow up by an ocean 😜.

      Hello Denver! Believe me - I have learned a ton since moving down here and encountering crabs and snails and critters! Sand dollars are another fascinating creature that I had never seen alive until I moved here. I have to say the best shells I find are ones that are still alive and I can't take them but finding them are fun anyways :)

    Hello.. why some sand dollars I think that’s how u call it, some are white and some are dark when dead?

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  Před 3 lety +2

      All living sand dollars are a dark purple color. They also have spines on their bottom side which they use to move. Once they die, they start losing their spines and they start fading to white. Some dead sand dollars are still dark because they haven’t been bleached by the sun yet. I made a whole video about them which hopefully will explain it better: czcams.com/video/K9H0EjZQsqs/video.html

      TeacherTeacher If the shell still has some shine and texture left you can tell it’s not bleached and worn down by the beach and sun. It’s probably hard to see onscreen but it’s easier to see when you’re actually holding the shell. ☺️
