- We walked Lovers Key State Park again this weekend and in the beginning of our walk it felt like deja vu. We saw the same critters we did a week ago: urchin, sea star and live apple murex. Once we rounded the corner on the North end, things livened up a bit and we started finding more interesting shells. Cloudy periwinkle snails are my newest discovery and I think they are awesome! Got to see an osprey as it practically flew directly over my head - managed to scoop some good shells from the surf and overall had a really fund walk. Best part was the manatee that we saw right from the beach!

Loved this beautiful walk!! You found a lot of great shells. Loved seeing the Manatee!! I hope the boats watch out for these gentle giants. I think they’re called the elephant of the sea.

Manatees are sea cows and I just adore them! We have a "park" here in Fort Myers called Manatee Park. These creatures get cold and swim inland to find warmer waters and there's an energy plant that expels warm water. They love it and you can see dozens of them at the same time. I'll have to do a video about it. It's such a neat place!

Those periwinkle's are my new favorite! There was a good display at the Sanibel Shell Museum about different snails. Hopefully I can make it back over there and learn more about them!

Another great outing. Congrats on the manatee sighting. Dolphins love boats and follow them as well as ride the bow wave when they are going fast. Yes that is the tip of a broken pen shell. My fave was the fat olive this time. Freshly dead so super glossy.

You are very welcome for the relaxing watch! What kind of goodies to the beaches of Santa Cruz have? I've only been to CA a few times and never really got to see any of the beaches. Except La Jolla, which was pretty awesome!
Not much other than sand dollars, clams, and mussels...my eyes are always looking for beach glass(worn out from the waves) That’s why a trip one day to Sanibel is on my bucket list!!

I was in Siesta Key a few years ago in water up to my neck and a manatee surfaced about 5 feet away from me and scared the sh** out of me lol I screamed and it kinda turned and looked at me with its chubby cheeks and all and went under again. I will never forget that lol
I know! When I saw the one that I missed at the end of the island I was startled - if I were in the water I bet I would have screamed too! I hope to get a better shot on video one of these days. It seems they are out and about these days!
The iridescent shell is a pin or pen shell I think just the base of a large one.

I think your zigzag bivalve is a Southern Quahog.
WOW!!! I looked this up and I believe you are right. In the book I have it doesn't show young versions of this bivalve, however I did find an example of both a young and an adult Southern Quahog. You are awesome - thank you so much!!

I thought I did when I went to Jupiter but it was a coffee bean trivia which looks very close to cowries. I was so psyched!
