Gears of War 4 will arguably go done as the Worst Gears of War game in the series. Hopefully #Gears5 will be an improvement. What are your thoughts on Gears of War 4 as a whole?
My thoughts as a whole? A rape simulator that you have to pay for just to glitch out and be suspended because the servers was having trouble balancing your teams good connections and the shitty 3rd world connections on the opposing team.
Also induces gambling tendencies.

@vinnievu1 Halo Reach was the last good Halo game. 4 has so many problems from art style to multiplayer, it's regarded as one of the worst Halo games by the community along with the trash pile that is Halo 5.

The first gears of war. There was no skill based match making system. You went on the multiplayer, got absolutely destroyed and then you either got better at it or you kept on playing even if you were losing hard because the game was that fun.
Frustrating but fun.
The good old days
The only missions I enjoyed from this game, ironically was the flashbacks to the Pendulum wars and Locust war. They are more interesting to play than the whole game, because the Pendulum wars and Locust war already had something to be based on their own like the original trilogy.
Also I couldn't understand how Del, JD and Kait didn't had ANY armor on em in the beginning of the game, but managed to tank damage just as easy as, if they had one?! And when they finally got it, it looked like it lacks any weight and wad made of plastic
Plus, apparently, nowadays all you need is your center chest covered. In GoW3 they learned arm armour wasn't necessary, so in Gears 4 they pushed it and said "Fuck it, do we even need leg armor?" lol
Ironically I liked Judgement a lot more than GoW 4 to be honest. GoW 4's story was just bad and lacking in depth. Characters were badly written, Marcus nerfed to an advisory/side character was worse. He was the hero of Gears. I still play this game though for the gameplay itself being decent.
Say what you want about Judgment, the story and characters were still well written. As for Marcus, he's like 65 now and has been driving thr plot for so long now. I would have rather the trilogy remain from JD's perspective and Kait's reyna plot can still play out as the main female lead. We could have had a better character development for JD here instead of the forgettable character he was in 5.
How I basically thought the campaign was.
Part 1. Go fetch this (3d printer-Fabricator)
Part 1.5 defend froms waves of enemies using fabricator.
Part 2. Defend the outsider post from waves of reinforcements using the fabricator with a few more options.
Part 3. Go fetch mother reyna.
Part 4. Go fetch marcus.
Part 5. Good marcus is back? Lets go.... fetch Reyna again cause we have not done any fetch questing yet right?
End game.
Then learn Oscar can cut his way out of a snatcher with a broken hand, but marcus could not because that would make to much sense.
Theres more in just heavily sinplifying, like leaving out jins shit. Cause in 4, we learned basically nothing but kait is related to the queen.
I was not impressed at this story in the slightest. Let alone 20$ characters like aaran griffon. Or the shitty gear packs, esports packs. Etc.
I didn't appreciate the Gears of War 4 Horde elements in the campaign because Horde always felt like a bonus arcade mode that played like a simple "hold the fort" game rather than something that is part of the story, especially in Gears of War 3. When I play the campaign of a Gears of War game, I like having it separate from the other gamemodes and only be an arcade style when I play the arcade variant, like Gears of War 3 had. Otherwise, I'm playing it for the level design and story.
Also, the lootbox multiplayer in Gears of War 4 was a disgrace. I absolutely detest multiplayer modes like that.
I did like the concept of a Fabricator. They should put that into Horde, and it ALONE. That'd probably make building your base easier.

when i want to play gears of war multiplayer i play gears 3 and gears 1 remastered

The directors of GOW 4 were goddamn idiots. GOW became what it was because it was a bloody semi-horror game. You took it seriously and you got rewarded for that. Characters not taking anything seriously is the polar opposite of horror and robots are probably the only thing in fiction that can't bleed. These fundamental screw-ups are so profound that it makes the fact that brought back the locust (shitting on the original storyline) insignificant by comparison

Gears 4 killed Versus multiplayer for me at this point and made me a Horde only player. Gears 5 is no different and even somehow made Horde crap with too many restrictions "Hero" character BS and huge lack of characters in the roster. Gears of War Judgement was honestly the last Gears of War multiplayer that I've had fun with and Gear of War 3 to me was the peak of multiplayer and the most fun and enjoyable in the series

I personally love all 5 of the gears games. I've never been one to play online much thou but everything else is great. I've played all the campaign at least 3 times each and i only started playing the gears games when gears 5 was coming out
I always knew of them but i was always a halo an cod guy but now I'd prefer the gears games all day. Well i still prefer cod online thou except for the newest cod. Fuck that cod lmao
Campaign felt like playing a marvel movie. Characters cracking jokes in dire situations.
Multiplayer overall was solid on my end. Then again I took a really long hiatus on the game and got back to it around 2018-19 on PC. For some reason around that time earning in-game currency and XP was surprisingly quicker than when I played it initially. I played that game till I got really tired of it/when gears 5 released... then went back it to Gears of War 4 coz if you ask me, Gears of War 4 felt like a more polished version of GoW 3 and we can all agree GoW 3 mp was damn near perfect.
Its crazy how similar the Gears and Halo franchises circled the drain. Both had an amazing trilogy, a decent spin off that was for the most part less liked than the ones that came before it, then two sequels that are universally considered inferior and lacking the core identity of the IP, both of them abandoned by their original creators to be worked on by affiliate companies under their wing. Halo Infinite at least turned the series around in a good direction as a final send off, and I hope gears gets the same treatment.
I will say: I at least found the gameplay of Gears of War 4 to be way more enjoyable than Halo 4. Also what did you think of Gears Tactics?

I did like the Colonel Hoffman Flashback sequence, however. Particularly, E-Day from the perspective of an average COG Trooper, and the Lightmass Countermeasure Perspective during the Defense Of Anvil Gate.

As a long time gears of war versus fan (3 multiplayer being my favorite), and playing a good amount of gears 4 versus, somewhere down the line I realized that the ONLY thing that made gears of war 4 fun was the residual game mechanics left in it from previous gears of war games. TC has added absolutely nothing to the franchise and have failed the gears of war community.
I'm old enough to watch this series rise and fall... And, I gotta tell ya, it's a whirlwind.
It would of been good if they were light hearted st the start than as they run into the swarm they realise how fucked they are and take it more serious and get the shit scared outta of them

I only played 4 and only cause it came with my new GPU, I liked Uncle and only him and his fake out death was weak.

Imagine making gears game where you had to kill F*cking ROBOTS for 1/3 of the game to steal fabricator... Just let it sink... The best part of the game for me were the first scenes where you had to play as young Dom and where you had to fight Locust horde ...

With all the critical praise for Gears 4 at it's launch I thought I was crazy for not clicking with the game, I'm happy to hear I wasn't the only one. I remember switching to Titanfall 2 as my main multiplayer soon after this games launch, which is weird knowing how much time I put into the previous games.

In defense of gears of war 4,
Actually not much defense you are kinda right multiplayer was ass and story could get boring at times. And you did make a good point about 4, it basically learned nothing compared to its predecessors, no lore drops (if any it was insignificant to the plot and did not explain the circumstances the squad that 4 was in), you learned nothing besides the fact that kait was related to Reyna who in turn was related to the fucking locust queen
And importantly I hated how they never fleshed out the characters outside of the tasks and nothing about their personality and and how they came about together in the beginning of 4 (kait could have at least talked about life in the settlement and talked about how it affected her as a person and her opinions and standings with the cog) and del and JD could have at least mentioned a part of their military career when encountering cog sanctioned bases and what their duties were and shit and how that correlated with them going awol. And the introduction was so scuffed they literally explained NOTHING but it played out very well to it kinda cancels it out.
And Kaits a total bitch the more I think about it she’s so annoying like I swear she contributes nothing and at the same time detriments the situation just by existing like if she was cut from the story nothing would change it’s crazy.
I believe that would have made them more relatable, and made people connect more with them as characters. and I believe you’re right about the story focusing too much attention on them it’s like to a older audience they expect people to like them because they are associated with the brand instead of good writing and development.
But come on basing your whole opinion about a game because of the story in a GAME is like complaining about a song with having no lyrics because you think lyrics are a integral part to a song even though that’s not true
But I get it, 3’s was fucking legendary and I can’t take that away from you, and probably affects your opinion of this game but for someone like me who’s first video game experience was 4, the crappy writing did not stop me from enjoying this game and neither should it stop you.
Bright lights? Wtf are you on about (respectfully), most of the time it’s dark and blue and shit and a clamity ass background of red and black is almost happening every 5 minutes every time there isn’t a cutscene. And honestly the part you were mentioning about the bright lights and color fullness and shit it’s a fucking cog settlement it’s supposed to look peaceful and shit have you ever looked at buildings they depict in the previous games they look like a goddam paradise bro you forgot about that shit gears 4 was the first game to actually show that stuff.
And that point about gears of war having too much comedy wtf they just being bright and shit, they look like they just got out of college bruh give them a break. They probably have the emotional maturity of a super senior. They are not like Marcus for real bro was probably in the middle of his thirties in the FIRST GAME, saw every possible combination of back shots in prison (with him included) and saw many friends of his die after minor inconveniences no wonder why bro is gritty and shit.

About that misdirected theme stuff again wtf are you on about (respectfully) like damn calling linear story events overarching themes throughout the game is hysterical, like damn that’s a stupid point to make but I see your point there it’s very hard to make a theme statement considering the absolutely convoluted story line, but if I were to make one it would be “history is dammed to repeat itself, but we make sure to learn from our mistakes” especially with the swarm returning (didn’t see a problem with that honestly) and how JD’s relationship with his Dad is very similar to that of Marcus with HIS dad, and how queen Myrrah basically tried to revive herself through her daughter’s dead body.
But yeah the ending if you actually think about it is a fucking cliffhanger like come on at least actually conclude something what did we do allat genocide for. Harry Potter and the deathly hallows has screwed fiction over I swear, a lot of media end their story with indication for a sequel, this not really ending the story but instead doing allat development to start up the next storyline like seriously end the game to end the game not to make some goofy ass post credits scene where they try to make another lower tier cash grab. And to aid your point it doesn’t actually solve a lot of shit that happened in previous games instead just give us more questions that weren’t answered untill the next freakin game

Actually, gears 4 added a lot of new stuff. New weapons, new plot, new characters and new enemies. The plot was ok, characters were not likable, DBs were boring enemies compared to locusts, but swarm was fun to fight against, and most new weapons were cool.
I still like JD though..
Honestly i think Gears 4 is way worse then 5. It is the the basis for all the decline. The start is anonymous, the characters are anonymous. Everything else built after that will inevitably follow that.
Compared to gears 5 , gears 4 is pretty solid

Where are you getting your sales info? Gears 4 sold more than gears 3...about 3 million. Evey game has massive population drop offs,even COD. gears 3 showed player numbers, I remember sawed off and retro made people quit the franchise, gears 3 had the fastest player drop i ever saw. A lot of gears fans have selective memory. Gears 4 mp.was a step up imo.
I think gears fans.are.more.critical.of the game.but its still good and successful. Im a die hard fan but i play the games for what they are intended to be not what i personally like. And thats the issue with gears fans, or any hardcore fan of any franchise.
Im actually replaying the entire franchise. I appreciate the direction 4 and 5 went. What do want? Dark and gritty every game?....wouldnt that get old?
Bottom line is gears 4 was objectively a successful game. Imo probably best overall gameplay in the franchise. Gears 5 was the most in depth in terms of lore.

The campaign was EASILY the worst out of the entire franchise. Annoying characters, an uninspired story, and the VERY mundane gameplay felt like this game was a chore to play.
Because it was garbage and the developers were totally out of touch with their audience.

I personally liked gears of War 4's campaign, it just felt like a fun campaign with a simple goal, it needed more depth but it had an interesting set up for a sequel. Can't speak for the multiplayer I never especially enjoyed gears multiplayer so didn't really touch it. I mostly play gears for the campaign and story.
Better multiplayer than gears 3 but very forgettable campaign with a useless overpriced season pass not to mention unnecessary loot boxes!
I can agree that the story isn't the great thing, but when it comes to pure gameplay, with awesome mobility, great weapons and level design, i think it's the best Gears ever :$
Gears 5 is other thing, of course.
